I would recommend studying the classical method, I don't say that to tear you down. I was self taught and used to play virtually the same way. Then I took about one year of classical lessons and my skill went up big-time. There's something to be said for figuring things out on your own, but there's even more to be said for piggy-backing off of the tried-and-true methods of the masters.

@CaptainCrunchOwns Dude... I knew nothing about that style, but I still played it correctly and all that when I began playing it. If you know your guitar, you know how to play it, no matter which style you're using. My skill however is pretty low, but on the other hand, I don't play songs that are out of my league. I'm self-taught too. I don't have to study to become good. Just don't play the guitar wrong and get stuck there. Experiment. What feels and sounds the best is the way to play it.

You may or may not be playing fingerstyle correctly. I have no way of knowing seeing as I don't know you.

But don't kid yourself, if you are self-taught there is a HIGH chance that you are inadvertently learning bad technique because some method feels "natural." There is a reason the best classical guitarist's hand positioning and plucking methods are very similar. It's because these techniques have been developed over centuries and they work best for most players.

That's not to say being self-taught is bad. Nor is playing with your own variations from the norm bad either. I'm just saying having a teacher automatically makes you accountable to someone more experienced than yourself that can save you from playing techniques that will slow your progress.

Case in point: I played fingerstyle for a year before getting a teacher. Turned out my method SUCKED even though I thought I thought it felt natural.

He thought I had taken lessons, since I had great technique. I did some things inefficiently, but I have kind of bad coordination, so I don't use some things other when I practice.
