260 millions are happy with it? That's a conservative lie; the most prominent surveys such as the Gallup Poll have shown since the 1990s that over 2/3 of all Americans favor a single payer health care system. The only people who would support private health care are corporate stooges who profit from it.
"I don't ever wanna hear we don't have money for health care again!" right on michael ; when will amerika get over its hatred and see mm represents the basic simple rights that should be afforded all people?
YourNameHere: The debate on Mike's millions is a bit lame. We must base it on the current problem in the US healthcare system that affects you and the person beside you. My advice to you is not to be seriously sick Trust me, it will be a rude awakening if you ever did!
the point is still very valid. I do not see michael moore volunteer his millions to help those in his movies. He merely berates everyone else. It is easy to complain, it is hard to come up with solutions. All michael moore does is bitch and complain about everything. I think it is really funny that he doesn't even offer to give some of his profits from his bullshit "documentaries" to causes. He keeps it all to himself. He is a joke and a hypocrit.
Weiner and him did provide financial support to some of the 9/11 support workers. The point is - even if he disposed all his own wealth to help the needed, it will not be enough, and it will not resolve anything. Hence, the reason why he opened a national debate. Now! If you got 57 million citizens affected by this, how the hell are you gonna tackle it?
sigh, first of all. That figure is not accurate. It might not be enough, but it would show he means the words his big mouth is spewing out. Most other people advocating their positions are so ready to sacrifice everything, yet moore lives fat while criticizing others for making profit.
So YourNameHere what should we do? shutup and just take it! Let the greedy bastards take all your money, then deny you the service you paid for. Cmon wake up!!!
They have a right to offer a service the populace has a right to refuse that service. If the service was so terrible, why are 260 million americans happy with it? The problem is people do not read their agerement and think they are paying for something they are not. My point is Michael Moore is a hypocrit berating others for making money, while living fat up in his mansion.
one man cannot simply dontate millions and hope to change a system. A system is for all people, so everyone should understand it. Donating money is a good deed but will not bring about change for the greater good. If someone did donate a lot of money for the healthcare system and this will help for X days/months...but what after that?
Because a few million dollars isn't enough to fund universal healthcare. Instead of arguing against Michael Moore's position, what you idiotic conservatives attempt to do is expose what you perceive to be "hypocrisy."
I lived in germany and now living in the US and i am going through hell by paying so much money not only have health care, but even with insurance,i still pay my ass off...we are a dumb uneducated country, thats why our corrup system still exist...I mean, anyone who likes our current system is basically a fucked up person, with no care for others.Selfish assholes, that is!
really, the only candidate with a sound health care plan is ron paul. Just check out the banner at the top of the screen and watch the healthcare discussion.
Healthcare is a basic human right. In the greatest, most prosperous country in the world, we should be able to take care of every man woman & child who needs medical care. Rock on, Mr. Moore...
I want free housing, college, food, legal counseling, medical care, movie entertainment(why should I have to pay to watch Sicko at all?),free transportation. Its a human rights issue.
I forgot one other important fact. Our tax dollars pay for the research for thousands of new drugs. Then we (Americans only) have to pay 20 times what other countries have to pay for the same drug that our tax dollars paid the research costs to test and bring to the rest of the world.
Former U.S. Healthcare CEO Leonard Abramson retired with over a billion dollars in his bank account. That money was bled from the people who were paying premiums to his company. Their health care was diminished to enrich him and the execs at U.S. Healthcare.
To the liar that touts ONLY a 10 percent profit - - that's AFTER they have spent 30 percent on TV ADs and 20 more percent lining the pockets of our elected officials (buying their votes). But most people know that. Why, then do "we the people" continue to allow it?
true true true. "We the People" must take to the streets, attend meetings, VOTE for the politicians that are progressive on these issues. Instead of, when election day comes around, not voting, or voting for the idiot that wraps him or herself in the flag and says, "I'll protect all of you Christians from the Muslim extreamist". We have to turn off the TV, and get active! The League of Women Voters has a list of every congressman, and how they voted on every single bill.
He seems to feel that our government should be held to some standard that he has thought up. That everyone should be guaranteed healthcare. Fair enough, but what about people that have a different outlook on the matter, like banning fattening foods altogether or some other absolute restriction of anything deemed harmful? The trick is, is SOUNDS like a good idea and this is what people react to. His schtick is to touch the nerve of the "average guy" and profit from it.
He kinda shrugged off the personal responsibility issue with a very flawed burning house analogy. I would indeed be upset if tax dollars went to put out a fire in someones house that, say, burned candles 24/7 or some other irresponsible behavior. I wouldn't want their house to burn down, but I'd have a right to be bothered about it and want them to do more for themselves.

I just love her comment - it's our responsibility to be compassionate. give me a break! The insurance industry wants to grow a heart suddenly and expect us to trust them. Hysterical. Michael Moore is right on. The private insurance industry must GO. There is no place for them in any meaningful reform. They serve no purpose except to suck over 30% of our healthcare dollars into their greedy hands.
I love how this ass trying to defend the healthcare system is the same as Dr. Gupta. Everyone's trying to discredit Michael and the facts by pointing out the flaws of the other countries. They aren't getting the point. The point isn't that other countries are perfect, it's that we are one of the worst at this. Everyone thinks that Michael just slapped this film together and threw it at us. He's been involved in this issue for over 13 years. I think he's gonna check the facts.
Thank You MOORE I thought I was alone the way the Doctors treated me like a DIRTY DOG with no insurance after I paid $7 a yr for BSBC it was like not having it then Now I dont have it and I have colon cancer I will die if we dont get Universal health care soon
I'm for national health care, BUT THE CLINTONS' PLAN - KEEPING *ALL* THE PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANIES INVOLVED - WOULD HAVE BEEN A HUGE BUREAUCRATIC *DISASTER* - AND PEOPLE COULD *STILL* HAVE BEEN DENIED PAYMENT FOR INDIVIDUAL INSTANCES!
ONE *GOOD* UNIVERSAL SINGLE PAYER PUBLIC NATIONAL HEALTH CARE PLAN FOR *ALL* CITIZENS IS THE ONLY WAY TO BEGIN.
And then we use what works best in other universal national health care countries and skip any shortcomings.
Thank you Michael Moore for bringing this important issue to the attention of the public and so rightly criticizing it. It is shocking to have to write a check or have to have insurance to get treatment. in the film a 2yr old dies on the way from a hospital that wouldnt treat her. its so wrong. I feel bad for americans living under these terrible conditions.
How could anyone in there right mind deny that Michael Moore is not an amazing individual. He has done more than any other individual in that he has made us talk about the problems. You can criticize his tactics, call him a communist or whatever your issue is, but he is out there helping you. Just because he challenges the system does not make him a socialist. Sure the systems mentioned are not perfect, but we have nothing.
Moore actually did a good job in answering the questions in a civil fashion. It could have easily turned into a pissing match where both sides demonized each other, but it didn't. Also considering this group would directly suffer if the ideas of Moore are put into place, I will also appluade the 11 lobbyists who came to the screening since they didn't have to.
He's debating, and in debates an intellectually honest person makes concessions if they are logical. The man at the end of the clip raises the issue of private insurance held by the Canadians and French as a supplement to the national system. Moore agrees, but maintains that insurance companies should never stand between a doctor and patient.
Moore has changed part of his message for this audience. He supports getting the insurance companies totally OUT of health care. But that's not what he says at the end of this clip. Intellectually dishonest.
We don't wait to get into a clinic in America. We rarely see a competent doctor in America. If your a good Doctor you know it. My experience with health care has been a nightmare. My first illness, a bladder infection became a cancerous tumor before I got in to see a competent doctor. Twelve years of doctor visits paid by the non profit HMO, to the medicine clinic, run by the same non Profit HMO. See the problem?
I viewed this film today. As a Canadian, living in the U.S. for more than 20yrs (age 44), I believe it is time I pack-up and move back to Canada. Much like the fellow from France did in the film. I cannot risk all I've worked for my adult life to Insurance companies. I'd end up homeless if I got really ill and cannot live here, confirming what I already knew. Goodbye USA. Goodbye George. So long...take care.
jscottun: What are you getting offended about, the Canadian is right on the money. America is no paradise. If something doesn't work right we need to fix it.
Tommy Douglas of Saskatchewan began Universal Health Care in 1962. Doctors went on strike to stop it many people died. The Doctors etc got paid current rates, & it made a profit every year. It became National in 1964 and worked very well. It was Insurance. Its not free. Profiteers snuck in in the 1980s, costs doubled every year. More money, less services, & slowly deteriorated. For-Prof is legal again but things continue to worsen. The original Tommy Douglas System will make things better again.
the us health care "industry" has made billions, on drugs, care, doctors, and a sycophant lobbyists paradise called the us congress. remember: corporations-now run your life... happy?
The only one who can be held RESPONSIBLE for that is the government, which should be there to provide certain services to their people, one of which free healthcare is one of THE most important ones... (Btw, Sicko is a real piece of art and everyone, especially right-wing bastards should go see the movie and try to understand it!)
The real issue is that all people have the right to get healthcare. From the moment on you put a price on that, you start discriminating.
The only comparison between Canada and the US that matters in this topic sees this : In Canada people don't die because of a lack of money, in the US people do, end of the line, that's it.
I think the right to healthcare is an ineffective argument, lots of people don't believe in it. But most people agree we shouldn't pay more for worse service.
You have to put a price on it, all universal systems deny care. People in Canada and the UK are denied treatment by the Government because it is experimental, too costly, etc. The difference is that the systems there are trying to make those decisions in the public interest.
I would rather have passive government inefficiency than an active, antagonistic inefficiency driven by profit-driven insurance companies...anyday. If you don't believe it is true, just look at healthcare administrative costs per capita in Canada ($307) vs. US ($1,059). And Canadians have more hospital and physician visits than we do, so the spread is even greater, basically they get more for less. That was 1999, it is greater today.
Basically private enterprise turns out to be not only more inequitable but ALSO inefficient compared to public bureaucracies as far as health care is concerned. Why? Because profit grows with inefficiency, - in health care you cannot escape those basic market forces. American auto companies engineered in inefficiency (obsolescence) until foreign imports knocked them off their asses. With health care, there is no foreign import to save the consumer...we must demand it.
I don't know about fascist, but it is a very stupid statement because ultimately health care, whether in universal care systems or private methods is always everyone's responsibilty. Basically she is not saying anything, just babbling.
Well, what she misses is the point Moore makes at the beginning. It is illegal for the healthcare industry to take responsibility for quality and equability of care. Their legal responsibility is to maximize profits. If they did chose to be "compassionate" as she suggests they should, they could be sued by their shareholders.
He's fucking right...bush got 1.7trillion dollars for this dip shit war...plus he continues too get billions more every so many months for the war...if we can waste trillions & billions on war, why can't do the same for health care, education ect, ect...it's a huge crook of shit....and what people don't realize it's the rich fucks that don't have too worry about health care that are calling the shots for us poor fucks..
Everyone should have the LEXUS (unlike what that arrogant lobbyist said, which everyone should have a "Chevy" but the wealthy could buy a "Lexus" of health care) of Health Care in a country as wealthy as ours. It is "LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" isn't it?
UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE FOR ALL; NOT ONE PERSON EXCLUDED. And the person I am paraphrasing died in part because of poor treatment. Damn.
Bliss - have you ever been to an innercity ER? Those are long lines regardless. I saw a man wait 4 hours with a collapsed lung, and that was with APPROPRIATE triage.
A broken elbow is painful but not LIFE THREATENING. Your life was not in danger by the 6 hour wait...you were merely inconvenienced. Emergency is for emergencies...the most critical cases are dealt with first. I am sure there were more critical cases using the x-ray equipment and the technicians. Should we dismantle our entire health care system just so that people like you can recoup your 6 hours time...so you can go home and watch tv or sleep for those 6 hours?
I've never waited that long to see a doctor. Never more than 30 minutes as a walk-in and maybe 10 minutes when I have an appointment. I just don't understand when some Canadians try to imply our health care is rife with problems...maybe complaining is a side effect of being healthy.
Dismantle your entire healt care system? What system, you have no system! Building hospitals and letting them work for money is no system... You're so short sighted it makes me desperate... WHY CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND ANYTHING, or at least try. I think I know why: because you don't want to; you haven't been abused by the system yet, so it's someone else's problem... way to go man, way to go!!!
The US spends more on health care per person than any country in the world - $5,711. Canada spends $2,699, counting taxes.
Canada is 7th in the world in responsiveness, that's worse than the US (which is first). The level of care in Canada is 12th (US 24th), level of health is 35th (US 72nd), overall ranking is 30th (US 37th).
The Canadian has slightly longer waiting times. But they get better care for half the price.
Cool, thx for posting that. I was just talking about bureaucratic costs. But overall per capita costs are are also useful to point out that if there are problems in the Canadian system, it is only because they pay so much LESS than we do.
This is false. Would you have to wait a bit for some things? Yes. But a society that allows MILLIONS to suffer needlessly is sick. We're the ONLY western industrialized nation that doesn't ensure Health Care for everybody. We're brutes.
Like Moore says each country has problems but watch the movie and compare the english reaction, the american reaction and the american in france reactions, listen to the list of things they get for free and look how worried they are to go to the hospital, that's whats moore want to change.
Health problems should only be health problems, not money worries!
Good Luck america to come up with a better healthcare :)
one lobbyist had a point, that insurance companies should pay out more and be more compassionate. well they also should focus on preventative medicine. and the govt should reset the incentives so that there is an incentive towards health, not money. or at least money for health.
Very good and very important video.

It became National in 1964 and worked very well. It was Insurance. Its not free. Profiteers snuck in in the 1980s, costs doubled every year. More money, less services, & slowly deteriorated. For-Prof is legal again but things continue to worsen. The original Tommy Douglas System will make things better again.

the us health care "industry" has made billions, on drugs, care, doctors, and a sycophant lobbyists paradise called the us congress. remember: corporations-now run your life... happy?
ColdChicago 4 years ago
The only one who can be held RESPONSIBLE for that is the government, which should be there to provide certain services to their people, one of which free healthcare is one of THE most important ones... (Btw, Sicko is a real piece of art and everyone, especially right-wing bastards should go see the movie and try to understand it!)
pieterpannus 4 years ago
The real issue is that all people have the right to get healthcare. From the moment on you put a price on that, you start discriminating.
The only comparison between Canada and the US that matters in this topic sees this : In Canada people don't die because of a lack of money, in the US people do, end of the line, that's it.
pieterpannus 4 years ago
I think the right to healthcare is an ineffective argument, lots of people don't believe in it. But most people agree we shouldn't pay more for worse service.
You have to put a price on it, all universal systems deny care. People in Canada and the UK are denied treatment by the Government because it is experimental, too costly, etc. The difference is that the systems there are trying to make those decisions in the public interest.
camipco 4 years ago
I would rather have passive government inefficiency than an active, antagonistic inefficiency driven by profit-driven insurance companies...anyday. If you don't believe it is true, just look at healthcare administrative costs per capita in Canada ($307) vs. US ($1,059). And Canadians have more hospital and physician visits than we do, so the spread is even greater, basically they get more for less. That was 1999, it is greater today.
metropolitic 4 years ago
Basically private enterprise turns out to be not only more inequitable but ALSO inefficient compared to public bureaucracies as far as health care is concerned. Why? Because profit grows with inefficiency, - in health care you cannot escape those basic market forces. American auto companies engineered in inefficiency (obsolescence) until foreign imports knocked them off their asses. With health care, there is no foreign import to save the consumer...we must demand it.
metropolitic 4 years ago
I don't know about fascist, but it is a very stupid statement because ultimately health care, whether in universal care systems or private methods is always everyone's responsibilty. Basically she is not saying anything, just babbling.

Lady in green : "Healhcare is everyone's responsibility" = most stupid remark ever = and very fascist remark
pieterpannus 4 years ago
Well, what she misses is the point Moore makes at the beginning. It is illegal for the healthcare industry to take responsibility for quality and equability of care. Their legal responsibility is to maximize profits. If they did chose to be "compassionate" as she suggests they should, they could be sued by their shareholders.

Damn.

The Canada'a system is like paying 'term' insurance. When you need it, it doesn't cost you "out of pocket" money
snowboard987 4 years ago
No, it costs high taxes and a waiting for help for an extremely long time.
Blissfulignorance123 4 years ago
Bliss - have you ever been to an innercity ER? Those are long lines regardless. I saw a man wait 4 hours with a collapsed lung, and that was with APPROPRIATE triage.

have you ever seen a canadian er i waited 6 hours with a broken elbow to get exrays.
Blissfulignorance123 4 years ago
A broken elbow is painful but not LIFE THREATENING. Your life was not in danger by the 6 hour wait...you were merely inconvenienced. Emergency is for emergencies...the most critical cases are dealt with first. I am sure there were more critical cases using the x-ray equipment and the technicians. Should we dismantle our entire health care system just so that people like you can recoup your 6 hours time...so you can go home and watch tv or sleep for those 6 hours?
xy11xy 4 years ago
Take a chill pill, oh wait you would have to wait 6 hours for the doc to give you a prescription lol.
Blissfulignorance123 4 years ago
I've never waited that long to see a doctor. Never more than 30 minutes as a walk-in and maybe 10 minutes when I have an appointment. I just don't understand when some Canadians try to imply our health care is rife with problems...maybe complaining is a side effect of being healthy.

shhhh
Blissfulignorance123 4 years ago
Dismantle your entire healt care system? What system, you have no system! Building hospitals and letting them work for money is no system... You're so short sighted it makes me desperate... WHY CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND ANYTHING, or at least try. I think I know why: because you don't want to; you haven't been abused by the system yet, so it's someone else's problem... way to go man, way to go!!!
pieterpannus 4 years ago
Pieter,
I was responding to someone who said the Canadian system had long waits. I was referring to the Canadian system.
xy11xy 4 years ago
All numbers from the WHO's 2006 report.
But they get better care for half the price.
camipco 4 years ago
Cool, thx for posting that. I was just talking about bureaucratic costs. But overall per capita costs are are also useful to point out that if there are problems in the Canadian system, it is only because they pay so much LESS than we do.
metropolitic 4 years ago
I'm pretty sure many many Americans would be willing to wait an extra hour or two in line if they knew they're bill would be half off.

QuasiEvilScott 4 years ago
no it would be 100% free but not as good quality and you would wait for a very long time.
Blissfulignorance123 4 years ago
Actually WHO reported that we pay more for the same quality of care. It WOULD be as good.

Your name betrays your approach to such issues.
This is false. Would you have to wait a bit for some things? Yes. But a society that allows MILLIONS to suffer needlessly is sick. We're the ONLY western industrialized nation that doesn't ensure Health Care for everybody. We're brutes.
thawkth 4 years ago
Like Moore says each country has problems but watch the movie and compare the english reaction, the american reaction and the american in france reactions, listen to the list of things they get for free and look how worried they are to go to the hospital, that's whats moore want to change.
Health problems should only be health problems, not money worries!
Good Luck america to come up with a better healthcare :)

We're fortunate enough to have health insurance, but being self-employed in America today means about $800/month for our family.
Ah, to be a member of congress or a prisoner in Gitmo. ;)

one lobbyist had a point, that insurance companies should pay out more and be more compassionate. well they also should focus on preventative medicine. and the govt should reset the incentives so that there is an incentive towards health, not money. or at least money for health.
