I get really sad when watching this because we all fear that day when we lose the one and only that we loved but just couldn't show more it when they were around and alive and the fact that Health is actually gone in real life is just heart breaking and adds more sorrow to this scene. I would say this is one of the best scenes ever. This scene always brings tears to my eyes. Heath Ledger should have gotten the Oscar just for this scene. The intensity, love, longing and despair that he expresses through his eyes is amazing. The way he says "Jack, I swear", it could mean a million things. It is such a simple sentence, but sums up his emotions and the whole story. We miss you, Heath!

In this movie, Ennis (Heath Ledger's character) did not have the guts to be with Jack when he was alive because he was afraid of a number of things. So, when Jack dies, Ennis seems to be left with great regret. It is a subject matter that, in itself, has nothing to do with being gay or being straight. It has to do with having the courage to pursue and fight for what you love. This last scene, where Ennis whispers "Jack, I swear..." clearly conveys the audience his painful longing...

@MollyChik For me "Jack I swear..." means all the frustration he holds from not having told Jack how much he loved him when he was still alive. It's like when you want to kill somebody and say "I'm gonna..." and never finish the sentence because it's all just too much to put it in words.
