I think the strangest boss I've ever seen was that Darth Vader-ish tusked boar from Bonk's Revenge on the Game Boy. I think it was the penultimate boss before King Drool.

When you play two players, it's not one of those 'take your turns doing levels' things, you actually play at the same time. AND YOU MOST CERTAINLY DO NOT WANT THAT.

There is an entry on wikipedia on this; it appears to be a mario-version of "squirrel king", which again is a mega drive conversion of rescue rangers for the NES. So Kikos guess in the first video was quite correct.
