I added this to my favorites a while back and still enjoy going back to it whenever I want to hear a passionate, thoughtful performance of a romantic, yet abstract piece!
I still remember Alexei Sultanov's phenomenal live performance of this Scriabin Sonata from the Sender Freies in Berlin in the early 90s. His rendition of the work totally captured me.
Spectacular performance, almost too much, but surely fantastic to have heard live.Obviously a highly gifted player. A tonic pick-me-up after Gould's dreary trudge! Still this work remains one of the most elusive in the literature, even for such fine pianists as this one.
Grandissimo pianista...senza manierismi e accademismi! era di una purezza d'animo infinita...peccato ci abbia lasciato cosi' prematuramente! Un grande davvero!
How very kind of you to post this just hours after my mentioning Sultanov's performance of this piece! As I listen to this piece, I feel as transported as I did that night when he played it in San Diego! He was seething with this raw, yet somehow controlled fury. He played without any mannerism; his hand movements were extremely economical. There is a quivering, though not tawdry, eroticism in his interpretation, as well as a state of 'suffocation in ecstasy' - just as Scriabin had described it!
the voicing at 1.30 is insaaaane

Такое исполнение открывает Скрябина. Мощно, откровенно, бегранично!
Россия не признает своих гениев!

"I summon you to life, hidden aspirations
You, buried in the dark depths
Of the creative spirit, you, timid embryos of life.
To you I bring daring."
That's probably not word for word correct, but it is the best I can do from memory.
