thanks for this precious video interview.........makes me glad again that i remember steeplechase, so much more fun before all the techno-crap pleasures that we have today. spent a lotta my young life at nathan's (almost set it on fire once), stories to tell that would get people arrested if they were still alive.
this is a treasure, no matter where it comes from, or for that matter, where it goes.
Charlie Feltman sold hot dogs for a nickel..until one of his former employees..a roll slicer named Nathan Handwerker..created and owned his own fast food place that remains a popular Coney Island attraction"Nathan's Famous Inc.".
What a great interview---we don't take time to listen to our elders as we once did. This was a joy. Thank you for sharing. This is the sort of thing that makes YOU TUBE a gem.
Wow good film. This Film should be shown on the History channel so America knows the thru beggining of the First Amusement park in the country. Also God bless this Gentlemen for Giving us some good History.
one could argue that coney island was a better amusement park back then compared to the parks of today. Those old parks had everything without the laws and restrictions of today.(for better and worst) today parks is all about coasters. although a key atrraction even in the past, todays park lack amazment. technology is here, but patents and copyrightlaws and legal crap, not to mention goverment secrecy keeps the truly amazing stuff from being seen.
Apropos, I remember seeing on TV years ago a docu about old Coney Island with interviews with the guy who played "Grandpa" in "The Munsters"; he worked there as a youth or a child.
Does anybody know which one I'm talking about and what the name of it is? I'd absolutely LOVE to see it again! I saw it about ten or more years ago and have never forgotten it....
Grandpa Al Lewis lived a life shrouded in mystery -- he claimed to have been born in 1910 and/or 1923! He also claimed to have worked in Coney Island perhaps as a clown and may have worked in Ebbets Field when the Dodgers played there. We will never the truth but he sure made his life into a fuuny mystery!!
That would be Ric Burns' "American Experience" documentary on Coney Island (from PBS). It's a classic, must-see for any Coney fanatic - hope this helps!
Haven't had the pleasure of watching that segment---but will certainly try to find it. "Grandpa" (Al Lewis) certainly had the presence of someone who had worked in a 'carney' setting...
This gentleman should be on CHannel 21 or the History CHannel. This is fabulous!!!!
