Hey dude, thanks for answering my question! Awesome, I'll have to remember that when I get one. Also, just few more questions...where do you recommend buying this for cheaper price? And how do you save your songs that you make? I've heard from other vids that there's no save option but you can somehow thru you PC? Im new with this stuff thanks :) nice vid!
Is there a way/option to use the vocoder so that you can just talk normally like a DJ speaking before a song, within the song? Think of that song, Jonah-Listen, like that. Instead of these Daft Punk sounding sounds. Thanks
@MKF30 Yes - you just turn to amp and turn down the vocoder and turn up your voice using pots 1 and 2. This removes the vocoder revealing just your own voice. You can add reverb/echo and flange and a whole bunch of other stuff if you want to fatten your voice if you want. You don't need to press any keys to hear your voice if you do this.
Midi cable between both keyboards ('IN' on the MK and 'OUT' on the Casio).
No you can't save a song. The MK has no sequencing capabilities thus you cannot save any note data directly onto the MK. It's midi though; you could hook it up to a PC or dedicated sequencer easily.
Yeah, I tried this Vocoder as well as both of the other current KORG vocoders (Sam Ash Music Cherry Hill NJ has all 3 of them stacked on 1 stand at the present time), the microphone for this one is shit.
I have some mellotron samples in WAV format and I'd like to put them on a synthesizer.. but I don't know what synth to buy or anything else. So could I put audio files on here? And if not, what could I put them on?
Great tutorial sir I am looking into buying one but I was curious about one thing with the vocoder is there a way to use autotune or do like a harmonizing with yourself kind of capability? I know they have this on this little voicebox things but it would be nice to have that in your synth. Also do u know anything about live liking using a synth? Or is there a software I can buy to do that?
@xrawrbiexrotten No, no autotune per se. But definite (subtle) harmonizing. You're not going to get Beegees style chords from this unit or real autotune (it's not supposed to really) but a certain level of thickness to your voice is definitely doable. I know I've been promising a new vid in my previous comments but trust me - if I get chance I'll showcase how useful the MK is with regards to this sort of thing this weekend. It adds a very clear volume - a fatness that's valuable when used right.
@Untitleder There's no drum machine at all - the single preset sound you hear in the video is just a multi-layered sound with a kind of bass and highhat noise overlayed onto it. You could create a drum sounding patch but it wouldn't be of much use frankly.
this may be a dumb question, but i'm gonna ask it anyways. Do you HAVE to be pressing keys on keyboard while using the vocoder or will the vocoder still give you the robotic sound in your vocal w/o needing to play keys simultaneously?
@ChompTrax It's not a dumb question at all but there's two answers 1) Yes you have to press at least one note for the *vocoder* to work - this is so the MK knows what note(s) to tune your voice to. If you're using the vocoder in polyphonic then you should press more than one key otherwise just press one at a time 2) No you dont have to press a key just to hear your voice. You can still filter it-flange/EQ/echo etc but theres NO vocoding. I hope to have a new video up soon which will demos this.
@alexeuph05 Absolutely in fact is very easy using the MK.
But unless you need to perform it live then you're probably better off doing it in post using something like Goldwave or Sound Forge so you get exactly the sound you're after.
@alexeuph05 Yes but it would take more than the 500 characters I have here in this reply to explain. You should forget the vocoder itself - it's easy to pass your own voice through the EQ and echo filters WITHOUT the vocoding part - then it's just a case of equalizing your real voice to the sound you like. I will be posting a new video on the MK which covers this sort of thing soon so look out for that.
I want a microKorg really badly especially for the vocoder but I'm afraid that the small keys will make me unable to play on a normal keyboard/piano if I get used to it :( Can someone get back to me on this?
@TheJacobHolmes You will not be learning to play the piano on the MK - at best it's 4 notes poly and usually it's 2. You will get used to the size of the small keyboard quickly but if you're used to a larger keyboard then it won't take anything away from that - it's not like you'll be wishing you had 3 octaves on a 2' keyboard anytime soon. If you're not used to any keyboard then it won't 'spoil' you in anyway. In fact you'll probably like the MK and then a larger keyboard will spoil it!
The jacks on the back are (some people were asking) :1 quarter inch phones jack, 1L and 1R quarter inch outputs, inputs for quarter inch dynamic and 3.5mm condenser mics, a quarter inch line in, and 3 MIDIS, in out and thru, and the ac adapter jack. It holds 128 programs total.
I Recently bought one and i love it! The editing is tricky, but the challenge is fun. I got it used for a little under $300. It is good for basslines, solos, and fun to use. I recommend it to anyone wanting an affordable, versatile, and portable synth.
would you recommend using this live? I'm looking at one for a band which would be gigged often..I understand I would need a dynamic microphone, but I would be an unhappy chappy to waste £300 on a piece of equipment which is fragile..thanks :)x
Really nice review, thanks. I really enjoyed it and have to get one of those babies. Microkorg with Kaossilator is a combination I would love to play around a bit with..
great demo man! loved it loved it loved definetly getting it! p.s. is the vocoder sort of like autotune? (i dont really like autotune very much, i was just wondering)
loved this! i really hope i can save up for one. i cant deal with the mixers on the computer anymore and i really want to work on making some of my own songs. would you reccomend this as something to start with or is there a better unit?
I have a few questions... I was really wondering if it is worth getting. Is it also a midi controller? Can I plug in a uni-direction microphone with a 1/4" jack? Please answer Thanks!
Hahahaha, I hate when it happens that you see an oversized manual, and you spect to open it and see the language division, but NO, of course, it's all just one language,
Like if I were going to read 500 pages of a manual, I think I never read a 500 pages anything, I'll end up learning it just playing around with the controls anyway, that's how I learned to use my Roland Juno G, hahaha, great video, I might go for a MicroKorg.
This may be a dumb question, but, can I hook the MK up to my 100 watt VOX guitar amp? Cause I'm liek in love with this model, it's great, but I have no idea how to hook it up.
is it possible to do this bass on secon 0:57 in the track Haezer - Who the fuck is Haezer (cyberpunkers remix)! ---> you can find it on youtube aswell! hope to hear from you because i'm searching for this sound since like a half year =)
@untitled006 Yes and no - in fact I hope to post a new video showcasing the more advanced vocoding stuff. You can use the mic and have your own voice come through clean - even apply fx such as echo, distortion and flange and so on *without the vocoder on*. But you can't use the MK's sound generator at the same time, as you need to have it set to vocoder to do this. Although - if you have a mixer then just hook the mic up directly to it bypassing the MK altogether.
lol he complains about not enough pots and says buy the ms2000 that they discontinued.. then says how usable it... which is why korg took away all the pots and made it more accessible intuitive and usable.. so thats like saying i wish it was less usable and sucked and wasnt improved and then praise the improvements..
I'm new to this kind of music, and have never owned a synthesizer other than some iPhone apps, haha. I wanted to know if this synth would be a good way to start trying to make some types of electronic music. Also, what software would you recommend to pair up with this to record/edit the music? If you could get back to me in a message it would be greatly appreciated.
you could use garage band because that programis pretty cheap and its really easy to have fun with and its not that hard to use. once you get really advance din your music, i would recommend getting protools or logic studio. there both expensive but VERY wrth it
Hey man, I was thinking about getting one of these. All I play is guitar, I don't have any synth/keyboard experience. How hard do you think it would be for me to use the microkorg?
The MK is a synthesizer and it'll make almost any electronic sound you want but ultimately it's always going to sound like an electronic instrument. It's not really designed to sound anything other than that - also it doesn't have a drum kit or sequencer so it's probably not what you're looking for.
If you're after bass rhythm and drums check out some other Korg devices such as the Electribe ES-1 or if you want to stray away from the mighty Korg then check out the Roland MC909.
Sorry about that, im just learning. I think what I need is a "sequencer" not "synthesizer" ... I think I found my solution LMMS , but it only works on windows n linux n I have a mac :( ... but I have an extra computer just need an extra monitor to get linux up and running again . Thanks for clarifying.
hey, i'm thinking of buying one of these as my first synthesizer. The main reason for this is because of how much it costs tbh. But would this be a good synth to start off with. I usually use FL studios to mess about with at home but I'm interested in actually getting a synth.
And if the mic is so bad for the vocoder what kind of jack does it have? (so i know if i can use the mic i have)
(soz for long comment :S)
one more thing,, is it worth buying if u don't plan on using the vocoder much?
i've recently become very found of vocoder voices and might be interested in buying one....Can i use this to get the daft punk voice or the T-Pain voice?
Yes you can get daft punks sound especially if you get a talk box hooked up to this, but for a true tpain effect you need autotune, which is different than vocoding.
i've recently become very found of vocoder voices and might be interested in buying one....Can i use this to get the daft punk voice or the T-Pain voice?
Hi Zkad - thanks for the video. I have just bought a microkorg and am new to all of this. Do you know if it is possible to somehow programme a sequence in, so it sort of plays on its own, if you see what i mean? In the way the demos do?
No, as I said in the vid - there's no sequencing capability with the MK. You need a midi adapter for your computer (and some software like Cubase), or you need a dedicated sequencer to be able to record your performance for future editing.
lookin to buying on of these things. never had one before i only have a talkbox for my guitar. people have said the vocoder on this is horrible so i'm really not sure if i want to buy it yet..but would you say this is a great overall piece of equipment to buy? it looks ridiculously sweet!
Question: With the "arpeggiator" settings, I recognize that you can simplify or augment the various arpeggiator sounds, adding and subtracting notes, changing the sound parameters, etc. But is it possible to program an arpeggio sequence from the ground up? That is, can you build your own arpeggio sequence from scratch or do you have to make do with what's already programmed into the system?
Okay that's tough to answer as I haven't experimented with the settings of the arp too much. When you "shift 3" a patch (reset to a clean sine default) you get a standard range on the arpeggiator. From there you can change many settings - oodles of them - timing, step, gate, direction, randomize - too many options to list. Now you'd still be restricted to what the MK can do but the options seem so abundant I think you could generate the sort of sequence you're after with ease. Hope that helps.
The MicroKorg is roughly $400 ( thats roughly 239 pounds, 427 Austrailian Dollars), so that's pretty good for all of the features it offers. Sorry that I couldn't guess your ethnicity.
Hey there. Im thinking about getting the microkorg purely for the synth and appegiator. I do already have a regular keyboard, The Yamaha DGX220. Would it be possible to use that for my keyboard with the microkorgs sounds and effects?
Yes and no. It does have format hold which will sample a few moments of your dulcet tones as you play, but if you expect a burp synth a la ferris bueller et al then you'll be disappointed.
its a real good value for the money and being someones first synth too, pretty user friendly I used to have one but I am using Logic Studio on my mac, trying to get into multi track production of course lol everyone wants to be like Reznor lol
Midi is a universal selection of sounds processed by your computer, in other words, not the factory settings, but universal patches contained inside a midi interface, AKA a midi cable, which let's you play sounds not included on the microKORG.
I like tha Casio flashing in the background.!! :)

as hard as any keyboard. i would suggest getting a 10 dollar roll-up piano and learning to play piano before you get one.

Kinda new to music, Is this usefull for actual music ? Sounds like space/techno music. I need drums to go with my guitar.
rickalex21 2 years ago

Thanks for clarifying.

good question

no a lot of people who play synth no nothing about piano
mikeymcginn 2 years ago
hey, i'm thinking of buying one of these as my first synthesizer.
SN3V 2 years ago
the mic is kind of bad but it comes with 1/8 and your standard 1/4 inch inputs
mikeymcginn 2 years ago
I did not like small toy synthesizers, and the price it cost. I love heavy synthesizers !

i've recently become very found of vocoder voices and might be interested in buying one....Can i use this to get the daft punk voice or the T-Pain voice?
kimskaar 2 years ago
Yes you can get daft punks sound especially if you get a talk box hooked up to this, but for a true tpain effect you need autotune, which is different than vocoding.
666haloinc666 2 years ago
Thats auto-tune, not vocoder

Hi Zkad - thanks for the video. I have just bought a microkorg and am new to all of this. Do you know if it is possible to somehow programme a sequence in, so it sort of plays on its own, if you see what i mean? In the way the demos do?
badders38 2 years ago
No, as I said in the vid - there's no sequencing capability with the MK. You need a midi adapter for your computer (and some software like Cubase), or you need a dedicated sequencer to be able to record your performance for future editing.
ZKad 2 years ago
lookin to buying on of these things. never had one before i only have a talkbox for my guitar. people have said the vocoder on this is horrible so i'm really not sure if i want to buy it yet..but would you say this is a great overall piece of equipment to buy? it looks ridiculously sweet!

Nice demo, ZKad.
Question: With the "arpeggiator" settings, I recognize that you can simplify or augment the various arpeggiator sounds, adding and subtracting notes, changing the sound parameters, etc. But is it possible to program an arpeggio sequence from the ground up? That is, can you build your own arpeggio sequence from scratch or do you have to make do with what's already programmed into the system?
krjam68 2 years ago
im wonderin the same thing
twofivefourlos 2 years ago
Okay that's tough to answer as I haven't experimented with the settings of the arp too much. When you "shift 3" a patch (reset to a clean sine default) you get a standard range on the arpeggiator. From there you can change many settings - oodles of them - timing, step, gate, direction, randomize - too many options to list. Now you'd still be restricted to what the MK can do but the options seem so abundant I think you could generate the sort of sequence you're after with ease. Hope that helps.

Thanks, ZKad. Much appreciated!

The MicroKorg is roughly $400 ( thats roughly 239 pounds, 427 Austrailian Dollars), so that's pretty good for all of the features it offers. Sorry that I couldn't guess your ethnicity.
SmartyPantsDumbo 2 years ago
Can anny 1 tell me if u have to plug the microkorg into an amplifier or does it have built in speakers. Im bying a microkorg so i need to know
TheChickenman93 2 years ago
you need an amplifier.
TheReAnimat0r 2 years ago
Why are there about 5 plugs coming out?
tobijon 2 years ago
Watch the annotations in the video.
ZKad 2 years ago
If it's like my roland, you just plug 1/4 cords into speakers or interface or w/e. So no built in speakers and you don't need an amp.
Sokkerkid101 2 years ago
do you possibly own a glass piano or is that an other australian guy.

would you recommend this for a beginner midi synthesizer user?
pittster57 2 years ago
Hey there. Im thinking about getting the microkorg purely for the synth and appegiator. I do already have a regular keyboard, The Yamaha DGX220. Would it be possible to use that for my keyboard with the microkorgs sounds and effects?
Jboy218 2 years ago
great video for people thinking about getting the microKORG, along with people learning how to use their new ones.

can this be used as a sampler?
danielc1620 2 years ago
So could I effectively use this as a sampler?
danielc1620 2 years ago
Yes and no. It does have format hold which will sample a few moments of your dulcet tones as you play, but if you expect a burp synth a la ferris bueller et al then you'll be disappointed.
It's a digtial synth and a vocoder. Nothing more.
ZKad 2 years ago
I might get one,Since I'm starting my own Electronic Band,I need like some breakcore sythesizer.
SammyTheCoolCat 2 years ago
Thinking of getting it. found one for £300 is that a good price?

it's a quite good price... but not that good. on ebay you can find it for 260 euros, 300 total because you have to pay the expedition

QUESTION: How did you hook-up your Casio Privia so that it could be played and control the effects of the vocoder?
ahiggs85 2 years ago
Through midi. Only basic effects are controlled throw the Casio's own pedals - sustain, pitch bend etc
ZKad 2 years ago
I just bought a microKORG and the vocoder seems to be scilent when I put the dial on it's settings. What am I doing wrong?
OhThatsSplendid 2 years ago
Select patch A84 then play a chord on the MK and speak into the mic. Is it vocoding?

I don't now to much bout midi keayboards. Can I use it with only an amp? (Without computer.)
seflac69 2 years ago
yes all you need is any amp and your synthesizer
sandman34119 2 years ago
the microkorg isnt only midi so yes u can use headphones or an amp
nickdj95 2 years ago
Midi is a universal selection of sounds processed by your computer, in other words, not the factory settings, but universal patches contained inside a midi interface, AKA a midi cable, which let's you play sounds not included on the microKORG.
