If you pause at 2:06 it clearly shows that Gohr crossed the line first, although I really don't care for the German athletes back in the late '70s and '80s....she(Gohr) should have been awarded the gold medal.
Oh,,what a shit,,if you watched Flo-Jo with her muscles and deep voice,,nana..in 1980 the Russians have thrown away the foto finish -film,,that nobody could really say,,who is the real winner,by my mind it was the german
It was strange how fast Gohr increased her performance since 1976. In the Montreal Final she was last and one year later she ran a sensational WR (10.88). I beg your pardon. I don't believe in miracles. :)
Looked to me like Gohr won. But the Russians have a history of tipping the balance in favor of their athletes during the Olympics. No way were they going to allow their runner to lose that close of a race on Russian soil.
Evelyn pulled up lame and torn her hamstring in the U.S. Olympic trials.. she was not perfectly heathly it ended her season !! What are you talking about RFSA88
@RFSA88 Once again talking about something you know nothing about, do you research please ?? take your own advise, as was already stated she pulled up in the trails with a hamstring injury, which might explain why did didn't win the trails or why she wasn't US national champ in the 100 or 200 meters in 1980, or why she didn't compete in the post Olympic season in 1980.If you had done your research you would know that. Maybe the others commenting saw the race like I did, you weren't even born !
Well, it sure looks like Ludmilla won this, she must have injured herself here, because she didn't seem to run in the post season. Angella Taylor dominated the post Olympic competition winning almost all the meets that summer, execpt for the final meeting in Zurich where she was second to Ghor in the 100 meters, and 3rd in the 200 meters behind Wockel and Ottey.
@karrtt1234 Yes, that's true. She pulled a hamstring muscle at the finish. Read that in David Wallechinsky's book, "The Complete Book of the Olympics", a great book of info, splits and every race, that he updates right before each new Olympiad, both summer and winter. Fascinating book.

the 1980 moscow olympics was a joke. the soviets cheated on so many levels...massive drug use by their athletes (certainly athletes from other countries used drug too...), officials cheating in several events etc etc. a joke.
there is also a story about Gohrs blocks beeing in disorder. she complained it to the officials before the start, without success. if you look at the race, one of the best starters this time badly comes out of the blocks. look at her first strides.
When they slow down the finish in the re-run at the end, looks more like Gohr wins it to me.. Anyway, thanks for posting all this old stuff. I remember watching it all as a kid. Happy memories.
at 90 meters gohr had caught kondratieva..but gohr seems abit out of balance the last few meters and she dips too early. if she had timed her final dip gorh would have won. even so it was very close.
There was a boycott lead by the U.S. of the Moscow, but even if there wasn't Evelyn tore her hamstring in the U.S. Trials - so she would have been in Moscow regardless.
I am a Japanese. I would like to see GOHR' running, please let me much more. For example,4X100 Relay in 1976 Olimpic Game,21.74 at 200m in 1984 and so on.
Göhr didnt run 200m in Helsinki but 100m and 4x100 m. relay winning 2 gold medals. Marita Koch was the winner in 200m and silver in 100m behind Görh. She also was first in 4x100m and 4x400m relay.
M. Göhr only ran 200m in one official competition, the European Champs in Prague78, and was beaten by Kondratyeva for only 0.01 secs as in Moscow. Her personal best in 200m was 21.74 though.Anyway her short steps wanst ideal for the distance. 1981 wasnt a good year for her, she couldnt run 100m under 11 secs and was third in the world cup of Rome behind Asforhd and Smallwood. She won many gold medals in the indoor european champs as well. Until Nelly cooman emerged as an specialist in 60m.
I would count Turin 79 as an official comp, although more a combined points comp for the country you still have top class opposition at the Euro cup, maybe not as prestegious as Euro champs but still a major comp.
@athlete5399 It is indeed a pleasure to see her beaten. I like even more the women's 4 x 100 in Seoul in which Ashford takes off in anchor and just tears down the track and passing Goehr in the process. It's an awesome relay to see!

Gohr really badly loses her form in the last 10m which is probably why she lost the race.

Where is Merlene Ottey? Did she get eliminated in the semis? She should have been up there against them.
PKCW22 2 years ago
She didn't run the 100 metres in these days there were faster team mates at the time, and her focus was on the 200 metres, she was a 200 speciallist.

Did Gohr run many 200m? She was closing quickly but her start was terrible.
buraramo 3 years ago
Did a few, silver in Euro champs, runner up in Euro cup both behind Kondratyeva 78/79.
Kath Smallwood was ahead of her in the World cup 100 a year later, thats when she run her 11.10.

@athlete5399 Even more awesome is when she gets past by a blazing Ashford in the anchor leg of the 4 x 100 in Seoul! Ashford delivers the goods!

Shame her Olympics finished after the 100, it would of been interesting seeing her in the 2, as she had beating Gohr in the Euro cup the year before.

Kondratyeva's gold medal was up for sale on eBay the other year, I think it went for something like $3000
Mark5058 3 years ago
Really? That's interesting news. I agree with RabCGiblet here, Gohr's start was terrible, not the one you'd expect from a 100 meters specialist.
