Je ne suis pas conquise par la mise en scène, mais Gundula Janowitz est vraiment émouvante. She has got a very beautiful voice, you can hear that here
Here is an example of a director with no idea about great art and a singer who is able, in spite of being made to look ridiculous, retains her vocal dignity. Brava, madame.
It's quite funny. Some people criticising artists like Gundula Janowitz. She was the first choice of some of the greatest maestros of all times such as Karajan and Bohm. She made history with many of fer recordings. Countess, Pamina, Gabriel(Die Schopfung), Fiordiligi etc etc.
'Harsh singing', 'boring'. Really...I'm very intrested in listening to your version of Fiordiligi, or anything.
2:02-2:12 O MY GOD IS SHE HOLDING A GUN ?? lol That's hilarious! LOL I find this whole 60's production of Cosi Fan Tutte to be so campy/funny...look at all those mirrors in that room and the bright colors!
Not always. Fiordiligi is not a role she was best suited to. Her singing of Weber and Wagner with Ferdinand Leitner (probably on here somewhere) is really exciting. True, sometimes she's a bit too 'serene' and relies on the natural beauty of her voice too much, but she often really brought home the bacon!
This aria is difficult for any soprano because its low notes. Leontyne Price had many difficults to resolves it, using only the chest and changing her natural sound. Janowitz makes a great performance because she pass the prove of the low notes without changing her sound and conserving a homogenic register. This aria is not only for "dramatic" voices, is a universal aria for lyrics sopranos too. BRAVA GUNDULA, ONE OF THE BEST MOZARTIANS LYRIC SOPRANOS OF ALL THE TIMES, A REAL SCHOOL OF SINGING
She should never take the demanding role that her voice couldn't rein. Her high notes sound quite strident, her low register is hollow, sometimes merely audible, and she struggles much in the cruel leaps. Her voice lacks of fiery fury for indignity. Any one who still doubts my words, please try to listen to her Fiordiligi in the live COSI from salzburg 1974, she sounds like singing sacred songs in a church. By the way, Dame Fassbender, as Dorabella, sings very well in that performance.
she missed a trill! Janowitz was the ultimate technician-- nobody sang like her and she did three nights a week or more t times-- but this aria is easy cake for a soprano. It's Donna Elvira that's difficult, She never had a bad night-- never. nobody, but nobody is like Janowitz.
Janowtiz is my favorite soprano. She has the most ethereal, other worldly instrument I have come across. (I hosted a opera radio show in Sonoma Ca. for several years and have quite a library). She absolutely transends time and space. Thanks so much for posting.

horrible singing, out of tune and very bad pronunciation... i really can't understand why this singer has become so famous, and WHERE IS THE COLORATURA?
It's so easy to critisize one of the most exquisite singers of the last century! Who do you think you are? Out of tune? Are you deaf or what? You may like her style or not, but you cannot deny that this was an absolute goergeous soprano. Fiordiligi is maybe not her best part, but listen to her Pamina (heavenly sung), to her 4 last songs from Strauss, her Contessa etc etc... Janowitz was one of the greatest. She deserves her fame absolutely.
I remember seeing this movie in Munich in 1971. Christa Ludwig reminded me of Jane Withers, which for a comic opera isn't necessarily bad. The sets are bad/silly and the lighting is excruciatingly bright. The singing is quite good, which nearly compensates for the visual disaster.

je suis désolée mais elle ne joue pas du tout !Fiordiligi est une passionnée!!Elle est froide comme un glaçon, c'est démodé !
boisfarine1970 3 years ago
The music itself has enough emotion in it to carry the sentiment forth. This is passionately and beautifully executed.

it was Gundula's singing and voice that made me love Mozart's operas

@wotansings I have to agree! Janowitz was one of the most sought after Sopranos in her fach.

@CuteDivoMA Not just in Opera, i love her angellike voice in the christmas oratorio of Bach. Absolutly perfect. To me one the finest sopranos ever!
