The main reason this port was terrible was that the porters couldn't get access to the original source code, so they had to try to recreate the game from scratch. of course, that's just what i've heard.
That's what I've heard as well, but even still, there really isn't any excuse for the poor quality of this port. A competent programming team would have been able to program working hit boxes, source code or not. Plus the game moves roughly 50% slower than the original. Furthermore, the music is just god awful. Whoever did the conversions absolutely destroyed Mimori's compositions. It's depressing, really.
@WallyBangerC Yep. Vanni Miele ruined Ikuko Mimori's original soundtrack to R-Type 3. It just goes to show you- Italians cannot make good games nor good conversions of Japanese games worth a damn.
I wish someone would post more videos of the GBA version of R-Type 3. Overall, it's easier than the SNES version, but a few things are harder. In Stage 3, those gray ships take 2 or 3 hits to kill instead of just one on the SNES (unless it's advanced mode). The final boss is also harder; those big white orbs shoot out faster and there are more of them. And don't forget if you get game over YOU HAVE TO START THE STAGE ALL OVER; you can't continue from where you left off. :(
minha nossa. joguei muito na infancia. esse final eu não esperarava.

An abysmal port of a great game. Too bad the sound is so off, at least they got the SFX down.
