They are named after ancient greek warriors of Sparta, that are well known to train their children in the most violent ways starting from the age of six to become the greet warriors. Same with Spartans - stolen at the age of six, trained violently and intensely, augmented and sent to war.

@condarth1 Its just a kind of promotional statement. The UNSC was looking to raise morale and create better soldiers. Thus creating the Spartans, a kind of super soilder. They wanted the Spartans to be seen as undefeatable, so the saying "A Sparta never dies. He's just missing in action."

The SPARTAN program would be the elite tactical strike team to counter these cells. At fourteen, these young men and women later became involved in the war against the Aliens. Slowly, they all began to die. Master Chief, Kelly, Linda, Fred, and a few Spartan III's alongside Mendez and Halsey are the only remnants of it.

The best line is by Kurt in the book Ghost of Onyx. Completely surrounded by the enemy, beat down to his last breath. He stared an Elite commander through blood and a broken body and managed a smile smile, then said," Didn't you know?"..., "Spartans Never Die," With that he detonated a tac-nuke taking tons of covenant with him, allowing time for his team to escape to safety.  That my friend, is the best Halo line in history.
