My guess is that there will be no search at all, because people will prefer to sit back and watch a carousel of "Recommended for you" videos based on their electro-magnetic radio frequencies. Helmets will be made available free for all.
What's more, searching will be classified as some kind of terrorist activity and outright banned. And we all be blissfully ignorant and "happy".
In my previous article in "13 Prophecies of Internet Marketing" in Marketing Pilgrim (2008) I've said: search engine ranking and marketing will be directly influenced persons, rather than sites.
The influential power of authority sites is weakening and social media and blog's power to influence is strengthening. So, the search engine ranking will be more dependent on individual support & reference than just a link from authority site. I believe that is the most democratic way.
google is in big trouble now that FB has that like button and can rank sites based on the massive amounts of data it collects... the days of html links etc.. are numbered..
@discusslife i hope you are right because I can't stand FB but you can't deny that FB is aggregating an insane amount of data on ppl that gives them an edge over google.
@will72wein Facebook is a single source where they collect information on users.. but Google collects the datas from virtually millions of websites and users across the globe.
Not only that I have seen people at Google are far more proactive with being flexible that they can merge in to any upcoming system take twitter for example.
my guess 5 years from now youtube will be the one many people prefer over FB. You will see many social networking features introduced in to youtube in future.
Great Question! Lets all look towards the long term implications of SEO.

@will72wein FB cannot compete with Google because most website use Google Analytics which collects A LOT of information.
