  • I think you are doing the right thing!! Yes, It looks like Pete Sampras' serve

  • Pronation is a knee bend when you tell someone to jump as high as they can. If they can jump over 2 feet that means they bent their knees. There is no need to tell them to try and bend their knee's it automatic. If you can hit over 100mph or even 70mph then pronation is there. You can't teach pronation really, its wrist muscle development. I can hit 115mph just using my wrist (standing straight facing the net, with the racquet up high at contact position)

  • Pete's serve was all wrist with the proper body foundation, set up, to allow all the energy transfer to his wrist. The shoulder and chest are used to but more for strength than speed

  • Retired figure skating coach here. I think that Pete and Roger have the best serves both disguise-wise and technical artistry! I think a lot of the top players can serve well, Hewitt, Safin, etc. But when I want to copy someone I take out Roger or Pete's to view as I think they are the most effortless & law of parsimony type of serves.

  • Serves are individual. There is no "correct" method.

  • I think you are right. Serving the way you said generate more power and control at least for me.

  • Federer has a pretty DECENT serve????... You are kidding right?.. One of the best serves in the Tour if not of all time falling behind just a few big names. You might have been a former atp player but show some respect to RF. Lol, pretty decent serve....hah

  • 1:55 HIGHT 5 for the ironie

  • Rather than imitation of others, the result is what counts. Different folks have different serve motion, since everyone's body's different. Give it try & take the goods, then skip what didn't work. Develop your own style!

  • Jeff is a former ATP tour player so plz guys, have some respect and he knows what's he talking about!

  • If that was a first shouldn't your left shoulder and upper arm compress more towards your right through the contact? In this serve the racquet face points backwards and yet the strike was more glancing because the arm didn't magnify the shoulder rotation into the shot. This is of course more question than comment.

  • federer is actually really good , did you see how how that shit was on fire against djokovic in the french open this year..

  • i hate tennis

  • @winkit23081

so why u on a tennis video - u cow.

  • Also, when addressing youtube comments don't take them so personally or seem annoyed. It's the internet, after all. People are going to act like assholes, try and take what they're saying and filter out their hostility. The video kind of comes off like you're trying to put this commenter in their place when you should just be trying to educate people about some of the confusion.

  • Fix your mic quality, it's 50% static and really irritating to listen to.

  • What is going on? Are we comparing everyboy with RF?

  • @zuolan well he doeas have a near perfect game.

  • This may be pedantic but the camera angle you are using to compare yourself to Sampras is a bit off. Doesn't make a huge difference but it makes one thing look equal that isn't. Shoulder rotation. Your right arm is almost in a 'I want a hug' position. I find my students who do this tend to be not quite as accurate, have a little less disguise, and a little less power. Again, only if we are being pedantic. Great video by the way.

  • I think you're on track. Great videos! Very impressed. And thanks for the info!!!

  • Is Pete serving leftie!?!

  • @mr850beast its just a mirror video. He isnt ACTUALLY serving left handed.

  • Boss: The Sampras serve technique enables low effort power and placement. I think you are on the right track, and the fact that you made a video about it, shows your willingness to learn and dedication.

  • pwned lol

    ur great!

    Leftys ftw

However, for lefty's you'd probably want more slice, right?

  • @TennisAnnalyst The higher toss and general proper hand above the head trophy pose led to a generally more straightened serving arm angle and motion... I'm beginning to be able to put the two together again, and have started hitting the cage from one bounce again. The height has to come from body angle and leap a little more... so as I am finding my balance with that new motion... onwards and upwards! Cheers...

  • Thanks man... you have me thinking!

  • Yeah you see... when I was not doing the proper above the head arm extension ball toss I was doing that Sampras style thwack... I mean the power that gets is great... so I think with the extended are ball toss I am doing more of a straightened arm swing... it's lost the power right there! I need to bring the two together.

  • @TennisAnnalyst Yup, I agree, thank you. I was not following all the way up with my toss arm... but now I am I have lost the pace... I was able to get the ball to hit the court cage at one to three feet generally with a good serve, now with the 'right' toss technique my whole thing is out... just getting it all together as you say. Thanks for the reply. I have been videoing... I'll figure it out LOL! Slow practise... hard serves!

  • Generally... there are a lot of different builds and bodies and angles... and techniques. It would take an MRI and a computer to figure out all the best techniques for an individual... and then there are serves that would be optimal but would not be practical on a good stats basis. I recently 'improved' my technique with the toss arm above and fully extended but have dropped from a 100 plus serve to 70/80 generally... balance etc. So horses for courses... 125 into the corner... it's good!

  • LoL not with the kick serve :p

you showed a flat serve when you were talking about the toss for the kick serve lmao

  • Thanks, ribcat

  • boss, you are right on this one. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the kind words Alexandra!

  • Yes, MegaReemas....dunking is a huge concept! Nice going!

  • I normally serve w/ the pinpoint stance but tonight at my drill I tried out the platform. What I noticed is that I really felt like I was coming up and over the ball, almost like I was dunking a basketball. The serve was heavier. Interesting....

  • and recently with shoulder tracking exercises that help stabilize my joint.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but we should be humble enough to learn and Jeff with his answer showed that :)

  • So astonished to see someone criticizing the generous tips that Jeff provides.. I feel fortunate to have someone that achieved the proficiency that Jeff did, sharing with us.. and if you know is story he wasn´t a great server when at Stanford University and decided to study the serve in great depth and made it a weapon... if we want to improve shouldn't we pay close attention to Jeff's tips? Well, I have and he has helped me with my serve, my FH ( through skype video analysis..which was great)

  • I'm no expert but the platform stance seems like an acceptable serve stance. Sampras was one of the best servers, and while his stance probably contributed to it, what I hear more about was how low he got and how he bent his hips like a sidways rainbow during his load. This allowed him to explode upwards and generate tremendous power. Roddick does it too. I would say the platform stance facilitates that better b/c your body can angle down (and "bow out") easier. Not everyone can do that....
