@ninabean100 FIRST of all. Sorry about the slip up of the fingers. I hosted GCS twice and I know Mike Esser is the director. That was my bad. Sorry.
Secondly. I hosted GCS twice- meaning I love them. But what I said was true and I stick by it. Esser has always taught very open vowels, which can sound weird at times. So why don't you take things said on YouTube with a grain of salt and chill out.
1) Most of you who are making comments about this competition show are being VERY judgmental. Are you accomplished musicians? Do you have music degrees? Have you directed high school show choir competitions? Or judged?Probably not. And if you haven't, then:
2) They're in a large venue and the acoustics change how the judges and audience hear them. However, the recording is directly what the mics are picking up, unmixed. The video is very different than the live performance.
yah.... their director taught them weird vowels i think. i found this to be true not just in this song, but every song GCS did under mike weaver. sometimes it was VERY noticeable, other times it just allowed a free open tone to come out... but i agree. the vowels were a bit troubling and did make her sound like she had an accent.
Also, I have a video from their last performance.... a THOUSAND times better. the soloist and the entire song. just to let y'all know.
Sry but i dont think the soloist shouldve been singing in that mic near the end wen the chorus was singing 2....except wen she sings millie....just my opinion
i was competed against this group 3 times that comp. season, best group ive ever seen in person!!! good times! Bloomington kennedy, Rhythm in gold alumi. 2001-2003
Not one of GCS's best closers. Keeping in mind this is a recording from early in the competition season, technically this is an accomplished performance.
What I take most issue with is the arrangement, which seems to barrel on out of necessity rather than making any sort of musical statement. With some keen editing, this could be a much better finale.
In defense of "Millie" -- she was a sophomore at the time. This was the first competition of that year for this group-- everything improved as the year progressed. She went on to win two outstanding soloists awards at other competitions that season. For what it's worth --
Overall well done, although the singing was the weakest part. Diction was sloppy, as well as breath technique. Especially when you're dancing, getting enough air is important. Mille sounds like she could be a good singer, but has a lot of work to do. Overall, pretty good, but only because of the dancing. 3/5.
It's not picking on a performer to give one's opinion of his or her performing. People have a right to their opinion on a performer's work, and to tell them to stop giving that opinion is censorship. Having said that, I think the girl playing Millie is okay, her voice just isn't suited to the material, and that's the fault of the person who cast her.
millie is horrific also what play are you going off of? Not for the Life of me is the opening number thoroughly modern millie is the second song, not mixed...wtf? I mean i get the make it your own thing of the play but to change the thing is kinda wierd....but the choreo is cute
Millie doesn't sound like millie sound. she was too chill, she wasn't perky and fun enough for the roarin' twenties era. And she doesn't sound like a belter...like millie should.
hmm.. the thing i dont like about the Millie is that her voice doesn't really sound like a young girl from 1920. it sounds more uptight, like a mary poppins voice almost. her voice would sound better in something else; its just not made for this show.
Helen (and all of the group) sounded MUCH better later in the season. My guess is things just weren't extremely tight at Onalaska since it was the first competition.
seriously amazing.... I'm from Winona and I know my way around theater here. This was such a big and pleasant surprise. Phenomonal choreagraphy, it's very tight and together. You're lucky you had such a great audience! Amazing chorus!! I agree with pretty much everyone else though. Millie doesn't fit in....I don't like her voice, it's very nasaly and she's not breathing properly. overall, just phenomonal! You should all be very proud!
i agree i completely love the choreography, it is really together and tight, and i love when the guys sing what do i need with love! and the ensemble parts were good, millie needs breathing lessons, she ran out of breath fast
Well, yeah. True. I was contradicting myself from something I said the other day. Well, still, even if she is good, her voice isn't exactly made for this paper.
And they're singing one of the most musical theatre style musicals with british accents because? It sounds horrendous.

Also... They won the following awards that year:
Best Vocals, Best Combo, Best Choreography, Best Soloist - not to mention 12 straight GRAND CHAMPION titles.
They're doing something right...

@llcooljay1887 Mike Weaver is not the director - Mike Esser is. Have your facts right before you decide to post!

Ok so one of my favorite lines in "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is Sodom and Gomorable. I don't understand why that was changed.

No one should ever copy a performer. Thats one of the great things about theatre, everyone has their own interpretation of a character.
