  • One of the best soundtrack ever! :D

  • Pirate themes. Yew got luv 'em.

  • Truly an enjoyable movie.

  • Matthew Modine's character has the same name as me!

  • Man, too bad most movies this guy has composed music for sucked balls. Perhapse I can get him to play for some of our games.

  • impresionante

  • well watched this many times and this is far better that mr jack sparrows mop..cant understand why this true pirates flim. ..dont make it.. the music and stunts were far better.. go morgon adams go.. fab film

  • Just watched pirates 4...hopefully this will wash the bad taste out of my mouth!

  • this was a great movie. saw it in the theater and the music and sound fx blew Pirates out of the water as far as i'm concerned... any way, how about Morgan Adams in the Morning Star teaming up with Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl... no ship would be safe... ... yo ho.

  • 2 guys take a long walk off a short plank

  • Ever see "The Crimson Pirate" with Burt Lancaster? Definetly a must see. Every bit as good as Cutthroat Island. Action and comedy all rolled into one. It's hard to find but it's on classic movie channel especially around Burt's birthday. Or pirate movie week. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

  • <3 wonderfull opening sequence !!

  • Great movie destroyed by one review

  • one Hell of a pirate movie

  • Wow, I guess filmmakers started to use Carmina Burana-esque god choirs before LOTR...

  • This is one of the best orchestral soundtracks in cinema history. From track 1 to 19.Absolute perfection.

  • Why did this film bomb at the box office? It is ten-times better than Pirates of the Caribbean.

  • @Exverlobter

I agree, and plus there will never be a movie like that again either.

  • @Exverlobter The first critic to play critic on the movie completely crushed it.

  • Loved this film as a kid, much more a pirate movie than Pirates of the Carribean...

  • I love Zimmer's... But Debney is flawless

  • i'm all for Cutthroat Island. Pirate's of the Caribean was just cack i'm afraid :P

  • This movie didnt deserve to be the flop what it was. It´s a good movie about pirates, even better than Pirates of the Caribbean, movie where comedy is too much.

  • ok first - LOVE THIS MOVIE!! and LOVE POTC! i'm a bit of pirate fanatic and expert, so for movies, its kinda hard to make a Pirate movie that's completely original. but for this, to have a woman as the main character is an awesome idea, since woman pirates were scarce. however, please DONT compare this with Potc. this was NOT made by Disney, but i do love Potc, dont misunderstand me. as far as music goes, this movie has more of an adventurous sound to the music. LONG LIVE THEM BOTH, I SAY!!!

  • @Scar2401 I thought this film kinda brought back the old adventurous feeling like in some of the older pirate flicks like "Captain Blood". Geena Davis's character reminds me of when i read about the female pirates Mary Reed and Anne Bonney, just as fierce if not more .

  • @OneCrazyWolfman I know!! her fiesty-ness as female pirate is awe- inspiring and sexy all at the same tim!!!

  • Good movie, Epic score, but a few flaws.

    1. Geena Davis was too much like herself.

    2. Matthew Modine was alright but his character could've have been better written.

    3. The film took too many themes from older pirate movies.

    4. It was ahead of its time.

    5. This came out on Christmas 1995. Goldeneye was released on that same date and people were more into that because they hadn't seen a James Bond movie for six years.

Other than that, the movie was decent in it's own way.

  • @infinitlycool #4 is exactely right. This movie was like from other space in 1995.

  • Hansy Zimmer has got nothin' on this mew-zick.... PotC? no comparison. Gladiator? maybe. sorta.

but this is epic, varied, moving and not repetitive like Zimbo's. froickin' awesome... espeically on Blu ray and surround sound :)

  • This score BRUTALLY MURDERS the score to PotC!

PotC had a good score (2 & 3 were awful, except for the parts when they reused the music from 1). But this score is awesome!

  • Totally agreed, people overestimate hans zimmer, but he's not that great at all. I still like zimmer, but... John Debney... well.. just take a look at Lair's soundtrack... that's the meaning of EPIC :D.

  • If by consistent, you mean reusing the same music for each film, then yes.

  • The music is alright but the movie was dreadful, it walked the plank at the box office and sunk the studio that made it.

  • EPIC is the right word to describe this piece of music.

  • Masterpiece

  • Cutthroat Island>Pirates of the Carribean

  • Totally agreed with you... the music is far better.. not that always zimmer's and badelt's "chan chan chan chan..." people think that Epic = orchestra chan chan chan chan :D

  • I thought the first Pirates of the Carribean is probably just as good as this movie, but POTC 2 and 3 had too much CGI. This movie gets raped by the critics, but if you're someone who likes a lot of fight scenes explosions action one hot woman and adventure then this movie is for you.

  • I will freely admit to loving the PotC soundtracks...AS MUSIC ONLY!!! It was Pirates 3 (Up is Down, specifically) that got me hooked on soundtracks in the first place, but I only like them as MUSIC!

They do NOT fit the FILM at all, a point that has been made by several film music reviewers already. BUT...I like them.

I like this too, of course - it represents ye olde pirates very well indeed :P

  • The movie is so-so, but the soundtrack is outstanding.

  • so-so? this movie was pure action and epic. it had the music the fighting the explosions... all based around pirates! sure it is no pirates of the carribean but this movie kicked ass. well at least i thought so.. along w my whole family.

  • Debney is one of my favourite composers ever. Passion of the Christ is his best work, I think...he also composed the music for a PS3 game called LAIR which is actually some of his best work - it's outstanding!

  • Great movie,great scores,and great adventure!

    Thank you.

    I love cutthroat island.

  • The best pirate flick since "Captain Blood".

  • good movie

  • I lived on my sailboat and have sailed the Caribbenas and the Keys and many of the islands there as well....This score was always an awesome theme music!!...

  • 100 times better then Pirates of the caribbean!

  • true

  • @e6e2e3e1, i agree a million times. i don't know why all the praises for hans zimmer compositions in the pirates.

  • @e6e2e3e1 Well this was a real action movie not sience fiction - children tale.

  • @e6e2e3e1

I loved this movie, too bad it was a trainwreck as for costs, promotion, distribution and ended up bombing big time at the box office...at least it sticks to the BASICS of the piratical/swashbuckling genres...chases, fights, battles, maps, lost islands and hidden treasures without having do call into play all that supernatural crapola like the PotC franchise...would love to see more movies like this one made nowadays...

  • It's hilarious how people think POTC is the best pirate score ever written. Not even mentioning the classic Korngold scores, this single album blows the POTC trilogy music out of the water.

  • This score is awesome!!! It always blows me away. I always consider this movie a "guilty pleasure" and one the main reasons was to hear the music of the end credits. This puts all of the other recent scores in adventure films (The Mask of Zorro, Jurassic Park, Gladiator, PoTC, the recent Star Wars scores, Batman) to shame. I wish the movie would have fared better in the box office in order to see more recognition to this fresh and energetic music.

  • pity..david arnold was attached to this movie..his score would have probably been good also

  • good movie

  • that waS SO fuckin epic!!!!

  • Cutthroat Island PWNS. 8 years before PotC and much better. More badass.

Though Capt. Jack makes PotC 1 a lot of fun... 2 and 3 however.... fail and epic fail, respetively.

  • I've never seen the film and have heard some unflattering things said about it, but I'll watch it at the next opportunity. A soundtrack this awesome can make up for ANYTHING!

  • Hey there...ok i was born and raised in the tropics and caribbeans.I have been sailing most of my life and just recently sailed from Pensacola bay to the Florida Keys .One thing i have always wished life came with was theme music and (Morgans Ride) has been the theme music for many adventures...

  • haha, thats awsome! i completely agree, but your life seems alot more adventurous and probably deserves an epic soundtrack! lol My life on the other hand is waaaay too boring and, well...probably dosen't deserve one. :[

  • My Friend!..I was born in the tropics and raised in the tropics and caribbeans.i would have to say this would be the theme music to my Life..:-)...Thank you for the entertainment...............Jason

  • I watched this again the other day and its brilliant! Thrilling adventure and little tops that chase scene with the carriage as a set piece. Great stuff, but just a shame they lost so much money on it.

The music however is so brilliant, as has been said before Zimmer tends to wheel out his old scores from other movies and tweak them a bit. Gladiator was awesome, but the PoTC soundtrack was mostly the same. This is fresh, sweeping and brilliant.

  • You know it wasn't Zimmer who did this particular score, it was John Debney (who also did Passion of the Christ)Gladiator WAS however Zimmer, as well as Pirates of the Caribbean (I was confused by the PotC).They are both brilliant BTW.

And totally right about the 'Cutthroat' movie. Adored it when I was a kid and still love it completely as an adult. Sad it didn't do better upon it's release. Great action flick! Well...and Geena Davis can do no wrong in my eyes. ;-)

  • The best pirate movie ever made. The sensation of adventure grips you from the very first moment and doesn't let go. Breathtaking action, brilliant music. Creating a profound sensation of adventure is rare in contemporary cinema, and I have seen nothing come close in the last decade. Most of the box office successes are popular for OTHER reasons, not the creation of intensely addictive adventure.

  • Oh god, I love this music. This is the one thing about Cutthroat Island that was better than Pirates of the Caribbean: the music!

  • That's right: the msuic of PotC isn't bad, but just ripped off from The Rock, Gladiator and Drop Zone, hardly anything new or original about that stuff. However, the music of Cutthroat Island is awesome, heroic and epic in every chord.

  • You're absolutly right! The PotC-Soundtrack has some very nice moments, but in general all Hans Zimmer soundtracks are lergely the same. Probably "Gladiator" and "The Rock" were the best of the bunch. But this is awesome, I get goosebumps every time I hear it! Also loved the movie! PotC 2+3 were really crap.

  • Is there a cutthroat Island Fan site? If not someone seriously needs to sort this out!

  • The best pirate movie ever made...

  • Damn Right! I think this movie failed because of being released in Christmas( this is an obviously summer blockbuster adventure extrvaganza); and the little promoting that was made for this movie.

But as they say: "What goes around, comes back around". Carolco for all the mistakes that made, filled bankruptcy and the movie was forgotten. After this, all the studios had the huge fear of making a pirate adventure.

  • The most obvious was "The Mummy Returns". ;-)

  • "Cutthroat Island" is one the greatest pirate movie ever. Who cares that production company had lost 90 milion USD in total to create it. It is a contribution to mankind, to freedom, to art, to show history which is today on the bottom of the sea, to show what people can make. That is why it is never a loss. You can read on wikipedia about arranging actors for the movie and see that creation of this masterpiece was a destiny.

  • I love this film, fantastic soundtrack, I have the 2 disc album. The best thing that Debney ever did, Blows me away

  • Thank u so much!I luv this movie!!!!!!!

Great music, the best pirate theme out there.

  • i haven't seen the movie yet, but i love john debney's music

  • Thank u so much!I luv this movie!!!!!!!

  • Great music, the best pirate theme out there.
