I think people who complain about Sophie are missing the point a bit. The show's not a romantic comedy. It sets up Mark as the geeky guy, and we start off thinking that if Sophie would just go out with him everything would be fine. But actually Mark's not sweet-geeky, he's a controlling weirdo (see later seasons for examples of this). Of course they're miserable, that's the whole point of the show. It's an anti-romance, if you like.
Sophie has never been a good match for Mark, and I'm so sad he wasted so much time on her. I know he's not amazing, and sometimes an ass, but she's worse. She treats him absolutely miserably.

I've just watched the whole of peep show (upto this episode, couple of hours left yet) and although a lot of bad things have happened/been done by the characters I've always found them basicly sympathetic. This episode was the end of that happy association. From now on, I'll be happy when I see bad things happen to the guys until such time as they redeem themselves (which, frankly, isn't likely). If this was on TV it would have jumped the shark with this episode.
Mark actually does really well with women who aren't sophie. I think because with her he tries too hard and is trying to keep up the crush because he believes she's "The one".
He throws away all chance at having a good relationship with anyone else for her. One of his character flaws. Sophie can be a bitch, but we only notice it more because she and Mark don't get on anymore.
I think you'll find that it's the other way 'round. No one's perfect, but Sophie really is NOT a good person. She's passive-aggressive and a little too willing to use Mark.
"push on to moscow" i always believed he said that in his thoughts in this scene, but i just realized he said it out loud! LOL sophie heard him say that and obviously didn't understand what it meant.
habs4life9 - actually "push on to moscow" refers to the German mistake of not making a determined push on Moscow in summer/fall 1941 and instead pushing south, letting the Russians gather their strength. Mark's historical references are pretty sweet. I guess it could also refer to Napoleon in 1812 but you right the show suggests Mark is all about WW2. If you haven't already youtube "skull soldiers", a skit by these actors as SS officers in WW2.

Is it bad when you've watched so much Peep Show over such a short amount of time, that you walk around commenting in your head with the voice of David Mitchell on what you're doing? Using the same sort cantankerous humour of Peep Show?

Me too!! For some unknown reason I let Peep Show pass me by when it was on originally. Now I'm a bloody Peep Junkie.
