  • It's a beautiful hymn, so lovely, the words

    But somehow contradicts itself

esp. if you read the whole poem, it's talking about how music and things like that make us "feel" closer to heaven but really it's just an illusion and the only way you can be closer to god is in deeper reverence

yet this has been set to music

    hmm

  • love this song very much

  • got here through Atonement...never found the song at that time, but on Christmas day today I saw composer Parry on the TV and they showed the scene from Atonement...so I started looking again. Should've looked on IMDB, silly me :)

  • love this!

  • This was at my grandmas funeral about a month ago, it's such a lovely hymn. It came up in the church service last night and made my grandpa and I very emotional. Still, it's so beautiful I can't help but want to listen to it all the time!

  • Thank you for posting this vedio is a lovely Song

  • "The tender whisper of Thy call..Speak through the the earthquake wind and fire, O still small voice of calm". Don't wait for the Holy Spirit to speak to you in earthquake wind or fire. Elijah found the voice of God in a "still, small voice". (1Kings 19) Soli deo gloria!

  • the last two versus made me cry! it reminded me of the soldiers singing in the film 'Atonement'

  • Such a great hymn. Praise the Lord

  • I was reading along in my hymnal, and the fourth verse on here isn't even in the Hymnal. Needless to say, I was very confused for a moment.

  • I would like to be able to live in accordance with the verse

"Drop thy still dews of quietness.."

Every word of this speaks to me. I learned this beautiful hymn at elementary school in Yorkshire.

    Thanks for posting

  • This was at my father's funeral a month ago. May its eternal beauty give us who miss him so much some comfort, because without him the world is bleak.

  • DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND HYMN

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,

    Forgive our foolish ways!

Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,

In purer lives thy service find,

    In deeper reverence praise.

  • In simple trust like theirs who heard,

    Beside the Syrian sea,

The gracious calling of the Lord,

Let us, like them, without a word

    Rise up and follow thee.

    O Sabbath rest by Galilee!

    O calm of hills above,

Where Jesus knelt to share with thee

    The silence of eternity,

    Interpreted by love!

  • Drop thy still dews of quietness,

    Till all our strivings cease;

Take from our souls the strain and stress,

And let our ordered lives confess

    The beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire

    Thy coolness and thy balm;

    Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;

Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,

O still small voice of calm!

  • Just wanted to thank you and let you know that we are very much enjoying including your excellent videos in the worship sessions at the new English-speaking church that we have started in Boquete, here in the west of Panama, Central America.

Thank you for sharing, and may God bless you in your ministry.

  • I went to church the other day and the vicar knew this was my favourite hymn, and also all of my problems. so after the service she got the organist to play it just for me......... Yes the tears did flow, what a moving moment that was..Thankyou Sue

  • sang so often as a child with little understanding.now more understood and like meeting up with an old friend.thanks for sharing

  • Very nice indeed. Blessings.

  • Its over two months now and i am still recovering ( albeit very slowly ) I listen to this Hymn most days , and it really does help.

  • Thank you, a channel that brings us the hymns of Praise, Truth and Life ....

  • I am at rock bottom + , and i listen to this 0ver and over again, it helps because its such a slow peacefull and very calming hymn, thanks to my wonderful sister-in-law,who is helping me get through these very dark days. Its only when you make a big mistake that you realise what you had to lose, in my case everything, ( but is having mental health problems and a breakdown, ,making a big mistake )

  • @shipahoy1000 This hymn means a lot to me, we sing it at school, and i'm sorry to hear your not to good. May God bless and keep you.

  • @shipahoy1000 - Remember, God is Sovereign, that means, He knew this day, this very moment from before Eternity, everything that comes to us, comes via His goodness and love for us. He rules not only all of Creation, but all that happens to us. This has been my confidence and succor during my time of loss, and, I mean everything too. But, Glory to Him, as I am being delivered through it I see the goodness and love of the Father through it - Rest in Him - nothing is an accident.

  • @shipahoy1000 - It is all for His Glory - Psalm 115:1 ....

  • Where's the scene on the fifth verse? It reminds me a bit of Birkenhead Park.

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz I filmed verse five in New Hampshire, USA

  • Thank you for this wonderful prayer!

  • thank you so much for posting this! i am looking forward to enjoying your other videos as well. it is so refreshing to hear the good hymns :) keep up the good work!

  • This hymn has been for me a prayer at the most difficult times of my life and I have prayed the verses on many occasions when driving to my various places of work. "Drop thy still dews of quietness till all our strivings cease.

Take from our souls the strain and stress

And let our ordered lives confess

The beauty of thy peace." A prayer for all people at all times,

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (July 11), I played this for Sunday School assembly. However, it was to the tune, REST, composed by Frederick C. Maker, 1844-1927.

  • This was my favourite hymn at morning assembly at Dame Alice Owens school, Angel, Islington, London. in the my years there 1960-66.

  • @UltimateTidusFan - Thank you! The nearest I've been is South Shields (and Durham). I will indeed visit Newcastle someday. :)

  • Newcastle must be a wonderful place. Thank you.

  • @GreenerHill (: ive lived in newcastle my entire life and its a wonderful place

i urge you to come visit sometime :)

  • All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen

  • :) thanks x

  • This is one of the great songs i'am playing at church on sunday, on the drums

  • ToniMxD - Wished I could have been there to hear it...

  • God bless you always and may he stay in your heart. (BELIVE is my special word and the line i always say..ok somtime..OK BARLY EVER!! i say WE WILL BELIVE)

  • Belive in the lord and he will forgive you the dear lord jesus and father God will give us another chance IF WE BELIVE

  • thank you and may GOD bless you

  • This is my favorite hymn of all time, the lyrics are so prevalent in today's modern world. "Forgive our foolish ways", mankind has been foolish in so many ways.

  • eminence4052 You are dead right as we are on a path to self destruction. However there is always the hope that through crisis we may enter a period of Renaissance (re-birth) that will provide us with hope (rather than our current despair) for the future of all mankind. Amen

  • I hadn't actually heard that fourth verse before!

  • I love this. Especially once I read the Brewing of Soma.

  • Absolutely lovely, particularly when (as here) sung to the tune Repton..

Strange, though, that "The Brewing of Soma" is written as a criticism of, amongst other things, hymn singing, as opposed to silent worship.

  • Yes, exactly! A fact often forgotten..

  • Thank you!
