hey max my dad has a 91 S350 SDL with 230400 mi on it my greandfather bought it new at 55,000 in cash back in 91. my dad gets 24-25 mpg now. your 300sd is in great condson. what kind of mpg your getting in the 300sd.
The British murder Rudolf Diesel in the early 1900's trowing him overboard on the channel in his return from England afraid of his new engine potential and to be able to use his design in the royal Navy fleet without royalties, German geniuses and British thievery,,, as usual.
Yes, you right. I come from Czech Republic, owning one from California and its thug life to find few parts for this car. It was because of the oil crisis in US.
By unplugged he is referring to a component that heats the engine block for easier starting in cold weather. Block heaters are usually never stock but are added to diesel engines in cold climates.
my 85 diesel's glow plug is nearly shot, and im regretting not replacing it already, i had to abandon it at my buddy's over night plugged in because i killed the battery twice trying to start it, recharging the batt every time. These cars are tanks though and i wouldnt trade it for anything else
Runs relatively well. I moved to Canada and took my 190D 2.0 from Germany with me. Back home everybody advocated 10W40. But due to the low temperatures, I moved to 5W40. That made a big positive difference for cold starts.
@Xx69roadrunnerxX: Most of the OM60x diesel engines used in the 80s have a pneumatic idle lift which speeds up the idle until the engine has reached a temperature. But I don't know if the OM617 has it (pre 1985 SD).
No. The early NA ones had a manual high idle knob. The mid 80s ones have no high idle control. On my 91 SDL the computer controls the idle speed and brings it up a bit when the motor is cold started, but it does not do a high idle once it is warm.
Listen to that nice solid "THUNK" when you shut the door. The new Mercedes Benzes aren't built that way anymore, instead they sound just like any other vehicle.
Sounds like mine 300TD 1988 and still running like a champ. Most important is letting it warm up, let it idle for a few minutes and drive very slow for the next few miles.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
People who keeps this kind of vehicle are unknowingly contributing MORE to the global warming effects than others. Please, these junks belong at the car cemetary not on the streets.
Idiot have you ANY idea how much energy is used to manufacture a car, this guy is doing the enviroment a huge favour, all you do is read a piece in newsweek and think you know it all! Moron!
1. Diesels produce less CO2 than gas engines, they are also more efficient.
2. Someone else mentioned it, junking a car and buying a new one contributes a huge amount of CO2. Not only in building the new car, but in scrapping the old one.
I thought that diesels are more pollutant than petrols... is it really true?
I know they have much lower consumtion and loads of more torque. But I thought they polluted more. Except biodiesels, which dont pollute at all (i think).
I made no mention about pollution in my previous comment. I talked about CO2 specifically, not pollution in general.
Combustion of fossil fuels ALWAYS releases CO2 and water vapor. It HAS to. The only way to reduce this is to design more efficient engines or use a completely different source of energy.
As for the other products of combustion, they are caused by incomplete or imperfect combustion, and thus can be "cleaned up" by careful engine design or the use of catalytic converters.
Also, pollution other than CO2 is more or less transient. If you remove the source of CO, NOx or HCs, the levels in the atmosphere will decline given a reasonable amount of time. Not so with CO2.
the older diesel fuels puts out a lot of sulphur, and running these old diesel engines on today's low sulphur diesel fuel makes a huge difference in the emissions
its alot cleaner than the carbon monoxide that the gassers put out
Hi, I'm from the Uk and used to own a 1985 300D with an aftermarket turbo kit (made by STT), I also had the pleasure of doing some cold starts in mine, around 0 degrees centigrade. We don't use block heaters in the country as it rarely gets cold.
Nice to see how they should start, mine was very worn and always started on 4 cylinders and picked up on the other one after about 15 seconds which never bothered me as it always started.
I know such cars very well and also if it is fuckin cold outside those engines start reliable as rocks.
A little secret about gasoil is to put either some fuel into it and nowadays the wintertime gasoil contains usually ingredients to avoid paraffining effects as well as thinners to keep it fluid which is essential for the railed-injection system and the nozzles.
thats not that cold... i did a cold start on my subie in like -10 on a ski resort 2000m (high) an the only thing i put on the engine to protect it was a flat cardboard boxs..
Your Vauxhall has direct injection, like my 2005 S320CDI, & at -4c it starts & instantly goes to tickover without touching the accelarator, the 300SD in this clip is maybe 25 years old,try starting a 1982 astra without waiting for the glowplugs, all you will get is a dead battery
Funny video :) Last week there was (Finland) -30 - -40 C and it's not a problem to start merc diesels without block heater, althouh it's a great help. Mine got "only" 320k miles on, quite low mileage here, thanks to high car tax.
Well I did not know what glowplugs were, so I asked. That is how you find out something that you do not know. Talk about dumb the F-word does not have spaces. If you are going to insult someone, grow some balls and stop being a PUSSY!
Wow. Another tough guy hiding behind a computer. I bet you will kick my ass, won't you tough guy? Now tell us about all the wings you pulled off the flies in your home... snapperhead.
100% clueless. Diesel engines are much better than gas. Mine has 260k miles and runs like when he left the factory. In some cases diesel engines went over a million miles without problems. Did u ever heard something like that for a gas one? Ok, they r noisy, snd slow, but they r an excellent piece of german engr.
I have 2 W123 Diesel benz's one my 300Turbo has 232K on it and the 240D euro has around 255K. Both of which start better and have given me less troubles than my NIssan altima and chevy blazer. Infact i drove my 240D all summer and racked around 24K on it in only 8 months.
Glowplugs are small heaters installed in the combustion chambers of diesels to heat the chambers so the fuel can ignite when it's too cold for the heat from compression of the air to do it alone.
I think you have a bad injector. I would pull them and test the spray pattern.
