Out of all of these, I'd say the 3rd Generation really stood out. It paved the road for Leaf Green and Fire Red, and Diamond/Pearl looked somewhat based off of it. It was also original and very well made...

Did you upscale the sprites on MS Paint? They are horribly distorted. Next time, select the sprite and hold Ctrl and the + button on the num pad to uspscale the sprite proportionatley.
