  • Easly one of the most advanced drummers in the world!

  • 8 people have had their gray matter removed to replace with rice pudding in the recent past... :-)...

  • Master of masters! :)

  • Megaman! :D

  • congratulations

  • One of the cheesiest well played songs ever.

  • Dont get me wrong I love Dave but this dave was so much more creative with his playing.

  • Mario Kart never had such a complex drum pattern before!

  • A Touch Of Perfection ! ! !

  • id put weckl down for the drummer with the best time in history, sure colaiuta has all the polyrythmic and off and on the beat type stuff down better than dave, but weckls notes fall with the click better than any guy ive heard in my life

  • There's a reason this is still awesome almost 30 years later.

It's so good, we can look past the mullet, and synthesizers!

  • groovy !!!!!!!!!

  • IIIMPRESIONANTE ESTE CHABON

  • Sick!!

  • There are barely any guys who can play faster then Weckl, and even the few who can are nowhere near as good a drummer as he is. Speed is a very small aspect of drumming. Getting speed is just the beginning of being a drummer, Weckl has taken it to a whole new level.

  • I love the fill-ins at 1:46 and 5:03, with the keyboard bass!

  • I LOVE this track. Dave's on fire here.....and for me, he is a master with the use of cymbals. I could loop this track forever in my brain and I would never tire of it. There is none better than Weckl for that perfect amalgam of technique and listenability.

  • Virgil all the way.........but in all seriousness, travis barker...lol

  • was that a mistake in 2:11 to 2:12?

  • @mojoefly no that wasn't

  • @mojoefly No mistake, a double hit on time on the beat, you didnt lose count. That happens alot in odd time signature. Count it yourself, you wont get lost on come in off time.

  • have had the pleasure of meeting this legend, and hadent seen this footage till now, this shows me how even more amazing he has got.... this is still obv crazy still but when you see him now its just silllyyyyy lol. mans a freak lol

  • Tight...hire this man or his equivalent now for your tracks!

Quantise does not really work! LOL!

  • Many good drummers in the world but DW the best by far.

  • DW is Father Chronos personified?

  • What a drummer to behold!

  • Comment removed

  • @Hypnus9

    Correction...what an Artist/Musician to behold.

  • @Easleytee I stand corrected. :)

  • has there ever been a drum set before or after that has EVER sounded this good?

  • 3:47 holy shit

  • Whhhhoooaaaa!!! haha!! aint heard this since i got the vid 20 odd yrs ago, man!! i'm just air-drumming like an excited lil kid!!!!! great stuff from 1 of the masters of our time :o)

  • Comment removed

  • what the good fuck

  • great drumming, boring ass music

  • @TheNuncFluens the music is a metronome to help keep the rythm and like if you turn a metronome at a beat it can help you play and guide you and play different kinds of sounds and beats

  • Crazy crazy crazy Groove!

  • For those who are interested, I believe this was recorded in 1987.

  • Dave Weckl (drums) and Jay Oliver (Keyboards)... Que duplaaaa!!!

  • Some old geezer told me that neil peart is the best. That was probably like 30 years ago. Now we have Dave, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd and Jojo Mayer etc...

  • Fuckin' awesome!!! Dave is my hero.

  • You gotta love them toms!

  • this is what perfection turns you in to.

  • anyone noticed that theres actually a beverly hills cop part in this song starting a 1:31?

  • genio!!!

  • May his soul come back again when he dies .. peace

  • And the award for most awkward cymbal positioning goes to... Dave Weckl!

  • Dave is one of my all time favourite's. I've seen him live more than once and was blown away each time!

  • Still as good now!! Dave is a Legend.

  • @Axxisss he plays a yamaha double pedal.i had the single version i think it was yamaha rp 7 or 800

  • There's a mo' fo' can f my mum any day he likes =-)

  • @TheHazaboi1 It's in 7/8.

  • @TheHazaboi1 7/8

  • i gotta have more cowbell!

  • One of the few drummers worth listening to who is not yet dead.

  • Well, well, well, so he DOES burry the beater after all. Shame on you, Weckl! :D

  • @antibulletdodger101 hes human

  • FRESH

  • dave weckl has done nothing but motivate me to play i will never play like him but i will never stop playing because of him

  • @Axxisss I believe it's Yamaha's pedal, the Flying Dragon.

  • he might be able to play the double parradiddle

  • Steve Gadd leading to Dave Weckl were just inspirational to the max.

  • con madreee ....para mi el mejorrr ....gran tecnikaaaaa

  • con madreee.... es el mejor bateristaaa..... gran tecnicaaaaaa...

    .

  • con madreee.... es el mejor bateristaaa......

  • I love his ride cymbal on this.....what is he exactly playing here anybody??

  • Love those paradiddles! Smooth, strong and effortless. Equalled only by Dave's newer track, "Mixed Bag", which is in 7/4 I believe.

  • esta masiso el video para mi vos soso el mejor baterista!!

  • Technicaly brilliant as allways

  • Dave should have stayed with Zildjian. He is also no where as good as he eventually ended up in this vid, but its still 10x better than I can ever hope for. Sigh.

  • 6 people were strande on a magic island

  • dave is just fantastic. If ever he makes mistakes it is still better than so so many people's playing. If you dont like dave weckl's playing than you are just a dick....period!

  • @billybladez66 its not that your a dick, its because you are massively jealous! And can't deal with it!

  • those rack toms arent big enough to be weckls

  • 20 years after first watching this video and I STILL shake my head after watching it. I know there are guys who can play faster but I haven't seen ANYONE yet with his mix of technique, precision, musicality.

  • @TrueNorth2112 Dude, I was just watching this thinking the exact same thing. I bought this video when it first came out and I am still amazed watching Weckl. I found the chart for this song from Weckl's "Contemporary Drummer + One" package that he put out. Time to hit the woodshed and see if I can learn it. I couldn't do it in my twenties, but maybe I can figure it out now in my middle age! :)

  • @TrueNorth2112 .... agreed , and the people that do go for this sort of thing , at least in an obvious way , dont sound very good ... Weckl managed to be machine like accurate while having it breathe and still feel good ... very hard to get away with that

  • @TrueNorth2112 He is great, but for me he still can't touch Jojo Mayer.

  • @TrueNorth2112 YES i agree with you dude..

  • @TrueNorth2112 There aren't many, but there are a few. Vinnie Colaiuta in particular comes to mind. But not to take away from Dave's amazing musicianship.

  • oh yeah!!

  • i've always said that he's drummer n.1 in the world and i'm a bass player!!!

  • If you ever complain about Weckls playing you should learn this song. Theres so many nice litte figures all over. And it´s not until you try learn this song you realize how well played it is. Stuff that sounds very up to date even 2011.

  • is this in 7/8 in the beginning?

  • @Jamoization Yea it's 7/8, at 1:24 it's in 4/4 and at 2:49 back to 7/8 (drum solo also in 7/8)

  • @EyesOnSkies hey thanks a lot.

  • @EyesOnSkies hey thanks a lot. yeah i've recently gotten into studying odd time signatures seriously for the first time so i just wanted to make sure i was at least on the right track.

  • @EyesOnSkies yeah, he's a master and switching from complex to simple and back to complext time signatures. influenced me to do the same. I just finished a tune which switches from 5/4 to 4/4 and back to 5/4 again. Ive done a number of them like that. Probably wouldnt even have thought of it had i not heared Dave do it.

  • time, time and time...that´s all that matters...

  • This was revolutionary, and is still beyond the grasp of most drummers out there. The mullet is majestic! Can't wait for it to return!

  • I'd never even HEARD of Dave Weckl until I was browsing the racks at JB yesterday, I saw 'Masterplan' and bought it! Brilliant!

  • Now this is what I call Magic Groove of 2011

  • Still magic!! Awesome groove!!

  • from which album is it?

  • @LofeKrofe The uploader got the title backwards, it's supposed to be Island Magic and it's from the Masterplan album. =)

  • @LofeKrofe Master Plan

  • Thank u Dave Weckl for inspiring me to play drums! U gave me a whole new outlook to play music an not the just the instrument! U r the best drummer to me.

  • Growing a mullet will not make you play like Dave Weckl!

  • @dudemusicspace who says? lol

  • Does it get any better? Unreal!

  • The only thing greater than Weckl's playing...is that mullet. This was back when Dave got flack for his playing. He was, is, and always will be an incredible drummer...one of the best ever.

  • Thats IT...i'm growin a mullet

  • Uno de los mas grosos que vi en bateros, y ahora el nivel que tiene Weckl es inucitado, éste video es del 89 aproximadamente.

  • @ExorbitantBboy

I'm cool with what your saying and stuff. Nobody's saying Weckl can't wield some mean stix. I'm just stating some facts of the matter that many people think Travis Barker has something to offer by flying upside down and jamming out.

No. I cannot lie. The truth is, sir, many people all over the world know Barker's the best. Weckl should stick to jazz and stuff. He's out of his game entirely when it comes to full throttle rock and roll.

    That's Barker's bad a** turf.

  • Dave Weckls creativity seamless compositions and musicality are so tastefull that no matter what drummer comes along Dave Weckl will always be astonishing!

  • @ParallaxDrums

I'm cool with that bra. It's cool. You know. Whatever & stuff. But know this, Travis Barker whips out drums and flies upside down! Now, who's as bad a** at that?

I'd like to see Weckl try to fly around in the air upside fricken' down while jamming out. Sorry, but it's not going to happen. The sheer amazing trifandangos of Travis coupled with his strong, skinny tatoo'd arms make him a powerhouse drum flyer. He's el grande big burrito on the drums.

    TB is bliss.

  • @JoeJacari "flying" upside down is not a talent. and joey jordanson was the first one to do that. i could tell that you are a beginner on drums, you probably dont even play drums, because you are single minded. now im not gonna say that travis barker sucks, because obviously it does take "skill" to play with big artist names. but "flying" upside down and calling it a skill is one of the most retarted comments i have ever read. go practice or take some lessons

  • @ExorbitantBboy lol Well put. Everybody has there music style preference. Personally when it comes to rock I like Neil Peart. Dave Weckl is at the highest level when it comes to drumming. I do believe this number is in an odd time signature but he makes it seem so normal to the listener.

  • His powers reside in the mullet.....cut it of and he will be nothing...

  • @MrFootball102 Sold your kit yet? :)

  • that's one mean solo, man!!

  • my favourite song from Dave, toguether with Heads up ;-)

  • Barker is ok but there are a good few drummers I'd put before him, Weckl, Portnoy, Peart to name a few

  • Barker is considered to be one of the best 'ROCK' drummers, I don't think he's played anything like this before. The styles of play are completely defferent.

  • He arose from the frozen west to be the best drummer ever. His name? Oh, so magical is Travis Barker that chicks throw their panties on stage and men stammer at his amazing flamdango Latinesque beats.

See the sheer Flamingo-dressed babes throw up their lingerie while Travis drums like a little thumper rabbit from the gifts of the gods heaven of immaculate and amazing pure drum crystals from Planet X.

Weckl is good. We know that. But Barker is YOWZA WOWZA CHICK MAGNETICO.

    Bow to T.

  • The song is "Island magic"

  • I'm pretty sure this is from the soundtrack to Sonic 3 on the genesis. Anyway, this guy's a great drummer, too bad he plays to such gay ass music.

  • Travis Barker.

    Weckl's OK.

Check out TB. He's the new generation of amazing players.

  • @JoeJacari what?? hope ur being ironic... cause if not ur being a total ignorant... weckl´s ok¿?¿?¿?... dude he is in the top 5 of the best drummers on the world dude....

  • @JoeJacari fuck you, travis barker?! dont start a riot, but travis barker sucks balls

  • @JoeJacari Travis is like the Jonas Brothers; no one likes them... All travis does is single strokes and probably can't differ a ratamacue to a 5 stroke rough. Whats worse is his ego, he thinks he is good, when that is truly and most definitely a lie.

  • he sux, i am way better.

  • Guess where he actually was at the time

  • Oh yar I can play that.

    Not.

    Bwahaha. Amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • @voodooorc Lol guess you didn't read the bit that said 'Not'... but my brother CAN play this, I believe ;)

  • only weckl can play that..

  • dave weckl e a musica 2 combinacoes perfeita ..

  • em creatividade ele cara ,uma perfeicao Dave Weckl considerado um dos melhores batera do mundo ..

  • musical..

  • good lawdt

  • DAVE WECKL THE BEST!!!

  • this is like something you would hear on a mario game. lol Dave is probably one of the best drummers alive!

  • Dave Weckl - demotivates drummers all around the world :D

  • @EyesOnSkies lol

  • its island magic !!! not magic island on lsd

  • its island magic !!!!! not magic island ???you trippin on your magic island are you sonds good tho !!! haahhaaaahhhhh

  • 3:50 :D

  • Why is this version so much fuller and fatter than the album version?

  • There is just not a single section where u could say "hmmm u could find a better solution on drums" ..just like every single song he play^^. i rly dont get how this is possible..

tho the beginning of the video is insanely gay^^

  • reminds me of flight of the navigator :) great tune

  • whitch album is this song from?

  • @jachmed Master Plan, 1990 "Island Magic"

  • @i7Qp4rQ Yes the original version of this song is on Master Plan. this minus-one version comes from his instructional tape 'Contemporary Drummer minus one'

i think the synth solo in this version has nicer phrasing than the album version.

    just my 2 cents :)

  • Sounds like it's from Super Mario Kart for snes

  • How did they record the cymbals?

    I see no overheads!

  • @QDrum92 there is... but they are quite hard to see... there is one behind the ride if you look closely

  • @LiveYungDieFast Ohyeah I see it.

  • anyone know where to get this instrumental?

  • I found this piece in my advanced higher booklet (for those of you not scottish, advanced higher is about grade 5 USUALLY) so i youtubed it... I aint playing this 0.o

    but truly awesome!!

  • A great master at the drums....

  • hey man ! nice nice perfect

  • Buddy Rich is the best drumer ever and no one has out done him yet

  • @drummerguyx

    Horacio "el Negro" Hernandez! Olé..!

  • This is one of the nine charts in his study method. It is such a good method, a recommend it to every advanced drummer.

  • Ludwig LM400 Snare. Love it!

  • this is some of weckl's best work as a player for sure...

and the stuff he did with chic is rediculous...

  • @Lifesucksdie123 ... I agree , his early work is his best .... some people accuse the young weckl of sounding to mechanical but I disagree with that . I think he played with lots of fire and energy during the " back to basics " and elektric band era ... definitely the era that made me a weckl fan

  • @Lifesucksdie123

so try to play a tune of chick corea elektric band!

    you will be really ridiculous!!!

    aahaaahaaah!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • simply great!!

  • This track sounds quite like the music composed for Sonic 3, albeit more metrically complex :D

  • great dave!!!....hey guys check out my drum cover of island magic...

  • Dave has improved but his music hasn't. It was better back in 90-94

  • I miss the mullet..:(

  • Dave Weckl is one of the best but it would sounded better if he used the original studio version of this tune with Anthony Jackson on bass and the Chick Corea synth solo. He could of muted his original drumming tracks and just played along.

  • People want creatures from other planets. More evolved creatures. Well here is one. Its another humanoid creature from the adromeda galaxy. Its a Zupah human!!

  • also one of the view drummers that keeps on improving. Dave dousn't stop. He still gets better.

  • Well i ended up recording the cover of this song, i added it as a video reply hope the OP wont mind. Check it out if you can, id like some feedback.

  • I have just thrown my drums out of the window and i'm trying to find a rope :(

  • i prefer just beating myself mercilessly on the head with my sticks

  • Dave is what we should all aspire to be as drummers...technique, groove, speed, power, stamina and improvisation. Dave is about as good as you can get....you can't get much better. He is from my hometown, and plays at a lot of local clubs and hotspots every year...I hope to meet him. I'd pay quite a bit of dough for a master class lesson from the great davino. Best double strokes since buddy rich.

  • thats right man! dave weckl rules! his qualities are wonderful!

  • @funkydrummer6783 I bump that 110% bro.

  • @funkydrummer6783 theres dave weckl, vinnie colaiuta and STEVE GADD!!!!

  • @funkydrummer6783

    Amen brother...amen

  • @funkydrummer6783 That's great! But... I've met Dave twice, and he's a great drummer, but he's probably one of the biggest ass-holes you'll ever meet. Even other professional drummers will tell you he's a little priss.

  • @funkydrummer6783 ... Dave teaches quite a bit ... From what I understand he takes students of all levels and abilities and I hear his rates are very reasonable as well
