This was ten years of anger at Thatcher coming out in one day. But remember that the ruling elites learnt a lot that day. They learned how far the British public could be pushed. That is why subsequently imigration rose, they needed to dilute us.
And what do peaceful protests achieve? Nothing. Look at the Chartist movement in the 1800s. A petition with something in the region of 1-2 million signatures was sent to the government, and the ignored it. It was only when the ordinary people rose up that the government took any notice.
@clout01 I'm with you. Its fair enough demonstrating against an unfair law but this riot was a bunch of selfish subhuman idiots. So Poll Tax was unfair, maybe your of the opinion that British society is unfair but is it much fairer to have innocent people beaten, property destroyed and stolen. "Oh but the police started it" I have never seen any substance to those claims. This video even proves that the crowds [edit: rioters] were provoking the police! Animals!
@TheMikeyReilly I'm a Tory voter and I think the poll tax was a bad idea, no one with any common sense would think otherwise...... but If it wasn't for the capitalist world you wouldn't have a mobile phone, a PC or a website like Youtube to spout your ill informed hatred on would you?
People like you think that smashing up other peoples property is justified because it offends your socialist sensibilities, fucking grow up you retard and join the REAL world
@chapmasi Sure, no youtube or mobile phones, but no Colonialism, the 14 hour day, class privilege, the 7 day working week, children in coalmines, the opium wars, the massacre of the Paris Commune, slavery, the Spanish-American War, the Boer War, starvation, apartheid, anti-union laws, the First World War, Flanders, trench warfare, mustard gas, aerial bombing, the Soviet Intervention, the Armenian Genocide, chemical weapons, fascism,
@chapmasi the Great Depression, hunger marches, Nazism, the Spanish Civil War, militarism, Asbestosis, radiation death, the Massacre of Nanking, the Second World War, Belsen, Dresden, Hiroshima, Racism, The Mafia, nuclear weapons, the Korean War, DDT, McCarthyism, production lines, blacklists, Thalidomide, the rape of the Third World, poverty, the arms race, plastic surgery, the electric chair, environmental degradation, the Vietnam War,
@chapmasi the military suppression of Greece, India, Malaya, Indonesia, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama and Turkey, the Gulf War, trade in human body parts, malnutrition, Exxon Valdez, deforestation, organized crime, the Heroin and Cocain trade, tuberculosis, the destruction of the Ozone Layer, cancer, exploitation of labour and the deaths of 50,000,000 Communists and trade unionists in this century alone.
Sure. Id miss my HD TV, but the 5.9 billion without one wouldn't.
@TheMikeyReilly Your entire philosophy encompasses the last 450 years of known history and mankind's progression throughout through those era's. Bullet point the bad and subjectively forget the ground breaking scientific achievements mankind has accomplished through capitalism. Do you think socialism would have found cures for thousands of fatal diseases? NO
The main difference is Capitalists get off their arse's and DO IT. Socialists sit on their lazy arse's and complain that they CAN'T DO IT
@chapmasi Capitalism gives us Daz Ultra. Mobile phone technology was made possible by the likes of Einstien and the rest of the scientific world, which had nothing to do with capitalism. Capitalism is fine, but it should be kept within the secondary and tertiary industries, and kept out of the primary industries.
I remember the rumour in the crowd was that the woman run down by the horses had been killed, there was also a rumour going round the crowd that the police had run people down with vans, which is probably why the violence directed at the police vehicles was particularly extreme. If the police hadn't gone into the crowd with horses and pushed their vans through the crowd it would have been a quieter day.
Its a shame we cant have a good riot like that today to show the capitalist bastards!!
No ones got backbone to riot nowadays, and so we are constantly walked over by the government, who gives a shit on the working classes while looking after the bankers and there bonuses!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i canb understand the peaceful protest to the poll tax cos it was shit, but i think that once they started rioting and chucking stuff at the police they deserved all the shit they got. and looting...WTF thats got nothing to do with protesting againsdt tax so they deffo deserve to have the shit twatted out of them. i think that in the circumstances the police put in a stirling performance and i think that everyone who reckons it is police brutality should do society a favour and hang themselves.
yeah, attacking the innocent people (shop owners) was wrong. I am a very peaceful person, and I love seeing hippies get beaten. But these people are standing up to their unjust government (for real, not the stupid crap that was at the RNC this year)
what are you on about? shop owners? Like corporate shop owners? RNC? You silly fucker, people should stand up to all unjust governments, the republicans, and the democrats are shit, and you're a fool for watering down the fact that people were being denied simple rights, all in the name of protecting some space cadet politician.
always some cunt havin to side wit tha filth. The rioting sure got the attention of the old bill I'm sure, not to mention, it showed that if people unify over a cause, no system will stop them.
A king a thousand years ago imposed poll tax, the result was the same, rioting margaret thatcher was a great PM but that mistake was one of the worst mistakes by the british government in modern times.
It's stupid because it's about being pround of something you had no control over (i.e. the country you just happened to be born in). Bill Hicks suggested that national flags should have pictures of a couple fucking; that would be very patriotic, too.
I get your point but you can't have a society that people feel not pride or duty to, well you can but it would be a crap society. If people hadn't volunteered out of patriotism in the past we would probably have got kicked about as a country
Don't patronise me, your not as enlightened as you think. MY point still stands and know one acted in the way you claim to the 7/7 bombings no one i know or heard of. Patriotism in moderation is benifical if not essential to society; patriotism establishes a sense of duty to each other. What you've done is ignored my argument and started chatting your own shit, if you think I'm wrong then come up with a reason why,
Yea but to say I'm wrong without attacking my argument itself you must have a sense of intellectual superiority as you have apparently decreed that I'm wrong with out backing it up or explaining why.
And I've already explained back and none of you seem to have an answer to my criticism of your views, you just keep repeating your opinion without a stating a reson why what i've said doesn't make pariotism OK in moderation at least. All your doing now is verbal diearrea, learn how to argue, learn what is called reason not just your subjective idealology
Oh, you always know they can't argue with you when they start ranting about "I am entitled to my opinion". Yes you are, and I quite understand that. Your opinion, however, is unqualified and false.
I never mentioned anything about being entitled to my opinion, Its a clear case of me having an argument which you dont seem to have an answer to. my point was that you seem to have your opinion dictated to you by the figures of the ideology you subscribe to.
I was refereing to the fact you seem to use Bill Hicks to form your opinions for you, since he is a well know left wing figure. I think the fact you used a quite irrelevant coment from this guy exposes that you have more loyalty to your ideology than you do to your own arguement or rationality, but that's just what I think.
I ask myself the same question russ, it's almost as if we've lost the ability to stand up for something. It's almost weird that we take all this and do nothing about it.
If this happened again I think Gordon Brown would shit himself - he is an awful leader and is sending this country down again. Yet the public take it. Why?
council tax is much more than poll tax now. We are really getting milked. Has any one any money left for themselves on pay day? Or has mr brown taken it all.? The cost of living in this country is getting beyond a joke. We need more riots!!!! Maybe we are all too tired worn out and stressed to do anything. Im sure thats the idea. problem is mormal people have no voice to be heard. We all feel the same but no way of uniting.

"then the looting began" - I remember most people getting stuff (mainly baked bean tins as I recall) to throw at the police.
At one point it was like the end of "The 300 Spartans" only with tins of beans rather than arrows.

you are wrong.
it's patriotism that allows wars to be easily started with the deception of the public. think about it.
a few bombs blow up in London, next thing you know every stupid cunt is shouting 'GO TO WAR, KILL THE PAKIS'
and in the midst of it all, MI6 are PROTECTING the 'mastermind'.
