Recolouring, as far as I'm concerned, is a acceptable starting point, I mean, I was a recolour 8 years ago (which, to be fair, Sonic online fan character communities were still new back then, so it was universally thought that recolouring was new and creative at the time), but naturally I've evolved my designs and the like

Recolours aren't shit, they're ILLEGAL. Recolouring constitutes copyright infringement and possibly trademark/trade-dress infringement, assuming the characters and their likenesses are trademarked/trade-dressed.

Just look at Limbo of the Lost. It was a PC game that lifted many images from other video games, edited them slightly, and formed about 95% of the game's content. You should've seen the legal nightmare that came out of that one!
