The "destruction" isnt simulated or random in anyway, its purely scripted events. Engine isnt capable of creating craters or any other kind of ground demolition, its not a bug that can be fixed.

Explosive did a hell of a lot more crater damage in the beta, but they caused a ton of problems, so they were removed in the final game. Maybe someday they'll return.
BF3 is definitely the better game overall but unfortunately BC2 actually had much better destruction in many ways. Lots more buildings that could be completely toppled, not just a frame and stairs that can't be destroyed. And the cratering effect on the ground was also much nicer, as this video demonstrates. Minor problem though, really.

Funny, within I dont know.. 3 or 4 games of playing online, fresh brand new to BF3 and I got into a vehicle.. Started shooting stuff, got into one of the LAV's and noticed that the delay is veryyyy late after each shot for the "crator" to even appear. They should make ALL of the environment destructable not just buildings.. -Sigh- maybe one day we'll have a fully destructable map.. one day..

Okay look here, Dice have done a amazing effort by making one of the worlds best gaming proccesors Frostbite 2 engine and Battlefield 3 is a very very new game, it's ofcourse mistakes there and here but they going to fix it when they have the time! The caliber of the bullets would not leave a crater. The canon on the AH-1Z Viper fires a 20 mm round. It would leave a small hole around the size of a baseball, not a massive "crater" in the ground.
@zxAMBULANCExz Thou' it's a 20mm _CANNON_ not a 20mm machinegun, and I asume they are not using API rounds on BF3, more like HEI-(T), possibly even MPT-SD for better AP-performance, but getting the HE and Frag-effect too which would leave the crater.

@brunitogg do you know how many requests DICE gets to "fix" the game? There's thousands of idiots complaining about the USAS and FAMAS everyday saying they should be nerfed (they are doing realistic damage, let's nerf real life too!), or the people complaining about this scope, this vehicle, or that map... Since a good 90% of the requests are pure crap, they don't care much about them anymore

@DrZiggyzoo1 no....i worked with games n modding before....3d craters are tricky but those lazy decals we get in bf3 is absolute bullcrap....its decal coding which you can tweak by changing a single number

The caliber of the bullets would not leave a crater. The canon on the AH-1Z Viper fires a 20 mm round. It would leave a small hole around the size of a baseball, not a massive "crater" in the ground.

@zxAMBULANCExz Thou' it's a 20mm _CANNON_ not a 20mm machinegun, and I asume they are not using API rounds on BF3, more like HEI-(T), possibly even MPT-SD for better AP-performance, but getting the HE and Frag-effect too which would leave the crater.
@brunitogg I haven't noticed earlier that lag with the crater, maybe it has something to do with graphich-settings you use? Gotta test it next time myself.

@zxAMBULANCExz You don't realise the 'Viper' has exlosive ammunition, do you? But that's besides the point, some of the "craters" don't look realistic, but why don't you focus on the overall game? In normal gameplay you shouldn't be looking at the holes your bullets make, you should be looking at the target the holes should be in.
