being old enough to remember when KFWB as well as WINS was top 40, I was always impressed by the way in which both stations maintained that 'top 40' excitement and tight production without music, as WINS continues to do today.
You have to wonder what the point of the change was. All CBS succeeded in doing was blowing away more than half of KFWB's average quarter audience and weekly cume in 12 months' time. Helped sister station KNX a little bit, maybe, by giving the all-news audience only one place to go...but it also failed to make the slightest dent in KFI's dominance in talk.
@BobWXXI It's actually very simple. After CBS bought KCAL, KFWB wound up as the extra station in CBS's Los Angeles cluster, putting them over the limit. CBS spun off KFWB to a trust years ago to buy some extra time, but sooner or later, it's going to be sold off. (This is still the case even as KFWB's website was merged into CBS' LA portal last month...)
As a result, KFWB's all-news format became too expensive to keep running. They only need to keep the transmitter running until it can be sold.
Who in Los Angeles does news like KFWB News 98, this clip is a heartbreaker they'll be no other one giving you the world in 22 minutes. One more thing I'll miss their great jingle.
I am a loyal fan of KFWB...sad to hear of these changes. Best of Luck to all the anchors, newswriters, and editors who no longer work at KFWB. Thanks for the memories.
I didn't know they went off the air. I have been to Los Angeles three times, and I would sometimes listen to this station in my hotel room.

This is just sad. I always liked KFWB better than KNX 1070. KFWB had better, more memorable jingles too.

I'm still not happy about KFWB switching from Top 40 to All News on March 10, 1968
