They made a large airbag for these kind of accidents. It attached to the front of the train, and is deployed by the train operator just before impact. It inflates at an angle so that it pushes the car out of the way intead of just pushing it with the train until it stops. I haven't seen them on any trains yet. You can look up the the thing im talking about, they have youtube videos of it in action.

A few years ago, a train hit a car near my home. The car had stopped on the tracks because of traffic . The driver could have stopped BEFORE the tracks but picked wrong -- really wrong. The next evening, I went to the accident site and watched cars for a while.

Amazingly, about half of the people, faced with a similar situation, stopped on the tracks. This was in spite of the multi-fatal incident on that spot the night before. Not everybody is a dope but we have plenty that qualify.
