I love this song, I love The Band, I love Levon Helm and all he represents, to the extent that I went out out and bought the album. So why are you uploading it and taking away the man's livelihood?
@WhackaWhacka I would never have heard this song else. And now...I´m going to buy the album. You see...life isn´t just black or white. There´s a lot of colors between...:)
@finbarboyle Any artist can request to have their officially released material pulled from youtube, if posted by anyone other than them. Any artist, who doesn't either doesn't care, or thinks it benefits them to have their music out there--which it does, of course. I bought this CD after hearing this song on youtube.
long live Levon i love the video promo he did for this. did Steve Earl write this song? though i know its more a N.Carolina fiddle song in spirit...thank you for this!
Yes, The Mountain is by Steve Earle, and it is on the album by the same name. It is his bluegrass album, with the Del McCoury band backing him. There are a couple videos of Steve's version.
@thelegalizer1 My Mother's folks were from Appalachia. My Dad was a cross of Crow/Blackfoot Indian. There is just something about this type music that resonates in my soul SO HARD, as you say.
what a trooper---I just love the man. God bless dearest levon Helm. Thanks for all the pleasure you have given us down the years.... I have loved, cried, and laughed with your songs.
Levon Helm was the heart and soul of The Band and he has maintained his musical integrity through all of the years since Robbie Robertson blew that fine thing up. He can take just about anything and make it authentically his own, He turns 70 this year and has been a musical blessing for a looooooong time.
This is by far the best rendition of this song. I feel I'm right there.really pulls me into it, to remember that coal is free. The price we pay is for the miners' lives.
@WhackaWhacka I live near the ocean no idea what its like growing up in the coal mining areas. I do love this song. Its about home , the good and the bad of it. But Levon makes you feel the love of a home that is what makes me love this song.
He had a big operation for throat-cancer just a year before this album was recorded. The doctors said that he would never be able to sing or even talk again, but Levon was not going to just give up, he made a promise to himself that he would continue to sing, and he did it!
Levon Helm. Nobody. But NOBODY. Does it better...

Man...and I thought Steve Earle nailed it. Even though Steve wrote it...Levon showed him how it's done.

If anyone needs a solid book, LH's This Wheels On Fire is pssibly the best muso biog ever IMO.

the book is such a great read, but he skips over a very possibly interesting story about going cold turkey to quit heroin and what that was like.

Have you ever heard the song "The Sprinhill Mining Disaster" by the Dubliners ? It's great, but creepy.
It just reminded me when you said about coalmining.
