Atheist uses far more bizarre time signatures and song structures, while Chuck was a master of lyrics and riffs.

@mihneaadr I am guessing you never knew that Death was the first death metal band that ever came into existence then since you are implying that you recently discovered them. They've been around since 1983 under the name Mantas(changed it to Death in 1985). If you listen to their earliest attempts and compare them to the final Death album, you can just tell that they evolved beyond a standard of musical creativity. I am glad that you discovered them before assuming metalcore was death metal.

@mihneaadr That's the ticket. I used to loathe pretty much any extreme metal genre, mostly because it's all blast beats, growls, and over-distorted guitars without any redeeming qualities. Death is most definitely not one of those bands. I'm much more fond of the heavier side of metal these days, but I'm still pretty picky about something that doesn't make me feel something from listening to it. Good job for finding something worth listening to in what can sometimes be a quagmire of lousy music.
