So I got accepted to UCHicago, but I dont know.. is it really that stressful? People say it's really tough and not much fun. Anyone from UChicago want to give direct opinions? Anything appreciated, earnestness and candor preferred.
Ohh..this is wonderful to hear that University of Chicago is really good in academics as well as providing a wonderful learning experience for the student.
I was considering Columbia Eng and Dartmouth over this place after I got into all three.....Got a decent merit-based scholarship, and made my decision based on whether I could graduate debt-free and without screwing my parents...In hind sight, I probably should've picked Uchicago over those two anyways - they're much better, and the college has a community-feel to it with accessibility to a great city and professors who pretty much hand out research opportunities.
@Tdog283 What school did you end up choosing? I imagine Columbia's Fu Foundation since you're looking at engineering? Although, all three schools are amazing institutions in their own right.
Just got into UChicago.....spent only 3 hours on the essays, well aside from the 50 hours from the Common App. Never thought they were considered the best though...Still waiting on HYPS.....MIT rejected me on pi day :(. Still, somehow I feel pumped...I'm gonna roll outta bed, drive to UChicago, and go visit :).
So nice to hear that UChicago recognized so well. At least for me, the school gave me so much impressive experience. Those great professors, fellow students and TA's. So nice people.
I attended Uchicago for two years and am taking some time off. So far it has been the worst experience insofar as their is this stench of negativity intrinsically existent in the environment of the campus. The students can't help but to always talk about how much work they must complete before a certain deadline or how hard this or that midterm is going to be. At the same time, the quarter system (10 weeks) is too short and condensed for students to legitimately comprehend more than 30% material
I am going to community college because I messed up in high school But, in 2 years my goal is to go to this school. Thankfully I am still maintaining a 4.0. Do you think that they will allow a community college student go there?
@iwillbd1234 When you get a 4.0 GPA but a 23 on the ACT.....luckily, that was not me, but I know the type. 4.1 and a 32, with 800s on the Biology and Math II subject tests. Not amazing, but I'm pretty sure that and being black helped a bit. (spoiler alert - last year I was ranked 25 in my class with a 3.6 weighted.....and a 30 on the ACT. Slacker ftw.)
I understand that. How badly did you mess up though? I messed up quite a bit myself...I'm in a community college finishing up my 2nd year. I'm doing good.
University of Chicago, the best university? It's certainly the best when it comes to ruining America. Its neo-conservatism brought up two endless wars, and its neo-liberal economics gave us the financial collapse. Thanks!
Leo Strauss, Paul Wolfwitz, Milton Friedman, Neoconservatism, Monetarism, Iraq War, Deregulation of financial markets... come on, if you didn't know these famously bad and debunked ideas were shamelessly peddled by the University of Chicago, then why the fuck did you ask me what I was talking about?
Dear god your one of thooose people. First of all, Paul Wolfwitz is a person, not an idea. In fact, you only listed three "ideas", that are essentially the same thing.
Sure, some economists and political thinkers associated with the university may have promoted neoconservatism but you'll be sure to find neocon economists AT NEARLY EVERY LARGE RESEARCH UNIVERSITY . If you're going to get all pseudopolititcal, at least make sure your argument doesn't have logical flaws an otter could point out.
Ah, I believe your logic is not watertight. Yes, Paul Wofwitz is a person, as is Francis Fukuyama, as is Leo Strauss, and on and on. Hitler is a person, so is Stalin. I am not referring to their persons as such, but their ideas, or rather ideologies that have had disastrous consequences. On this count, the University of Chicago is unsurpassed in its share of dimwitted ideologies that have accounted for the national disasters of the past 20 years.
Rankings people: no ranking method is perfect, and they should by no means be interpreted as listing universities from best to worst. The ARWU list places a heavy emphasis on scientific output. Therefore big, research-oriented universities will rank higher than liberal arts colleges, which may offer a more thorough and enriching academic experience. The THES-QS ranking is, in my opinion, too biased for British schools. The USNWR rankings are a little more fair, I would say, but bear in mind...
@AlvinHDavernport that they are evaluating a school as a whole, and not just the undergraduate program. This video, I believe, concerns the undergraduate program of Chicago, which is considered by many the most rigorous and academically intense in the nation. That doesn't mean UChicago IS the best school on the planet, it just means that its College has a truly outstanding reputation.
oh yeah i agree with you and this video. my comment was in response to hwwolverine saying that cambridge and oxford are by far the best universities in the world
Now a sophomore here; UChicago has given more to my life via experience, knowledge, people, lifestyle, and happiness than anything else ever has. Thank you maroons!
@TomCat2800 can you plz tell me how you got into this beautiful university i want to go here its my dream im in high school what was your gpa or act scores and how is it like plz reply back thank you!
please..someone reply...what is the best university of all???for those who want to study and have the best studies around the subject they are interested in>>>?????please....
First off, every list puts Cambridge and Oxford first; most especially if it was composed in the UK (which almost all the world rankings are). Also a school doesn't have to be top 5. I know people accepted into almost all the schools you listed but chose UChicago- it depends on the person.
I would say that normally the best-ranked school in the world is, by far, Harvard. It normally tops every list, except for the national ones (which oftentimes place Princeton on top). Cambridge is the best-ranked school in the UK in general, but it usually is 3rd or 4th on global rankings. UChicago is usually among the top 10, but when it comes to undergraduate education it is probably more respected than any other school.
@CSec946 I'm sure that's true, and I wouldn't be surprised. Bear in mind, though, I never said that Harvard dominates every single ranking, but it definitely tops the lion's share of rankings. Princeton tops some others, as does MIT and, like I said, Chicago (and Caltech, Columbia, Yale, Stanford, etc.), but Harvard's global standing is unparalleled.
plus, a degree from oxford/cambridge is worth more than a degree from harvard because the british system requires more knowledge in all areas relating to your major, not just a specialization.
THES-QS World University Rankings 2008: 1 HARVARD University United States 2 YALE University United States 3 University of CAMBRIDGE United Kingdom 4 University of OXFORD United Kingdom 5 CALIFORNIA Institute of Technology United States 6 IMPERIAL College London United Kingdom 7 UCL (University College London) United Kingdom 8 University of CHICAGO United States 9 MASSACHUSETTS Institute of Technology United States 10 COLUMBIA University United States these rankings were assembled in europe
ARWU League Table 2009: 1 Harvard University USA 2 Stanford University USA 3 Univ of California - Berkeley USA 4 Univ of Cambridge UK 5 Massachusetts Inst Tech (MIT) USA 6 California Inst Tech USA 7 Columbia Univ USA 8 Princeton Univ USA 9 Univ of Chicago USA 10 Univ of Oxford UK assembled in china...show me rankings that put oxford or cambridge in front of harvard and i'll shut up because i honestly havent found any and ive looked at the most popular rankings on the web
how does that make a degree more valuable? it's just a different approach. there are several schools that have rigorous core curriculums that require you to take many classes outside of your major, like u of c and columbia. harvard simply takes a different, more specialized approach and i don't think youre the one to judge which approach is more valuable. if a general education was absolutely more valuable, im sure harvard would implement that sort of system.
@hwwolverine That is not necessarily true. I don't know what makes you think that US schools require "just" a specialization.. Take UChicago or Columbia, for example, whose core curricula have achieved global recognition.
you could argue that the united kingdom 'made' america too. much of american culture was highly influenced by british culture. is it better? not necessarily. just because it's the first doesnt mean it's the best...
I don't think people apply (or are accepted) to Chicago thinking it's a party school. The Office of Admissions works hard to admit only people who "take pleasure in learning."
I went there a couple of weeks ago. It's not as socially active as Northwestern could be, for example. People are rather cold in general, or that was my impression.
But I'm not saying it's not a good school. If you don't care about social life at all, there is no better school in the world than Chicago—its academic intensity is simply unparalleled. But if you're looking for a well-rounded college experience, other top institutions will do.
Well I can't tell you off since I myself don't care about social life- lol. But nonetheless I have made many friends here. Dozens of close ones too. Idk, maybe it's our class in particular but the people are NOT cold...trust me. But it's a great social scene- of course I would say that Northwestern, Loyola, and DePaul do have more (the other Chicago schools) and the state schools double what exists here- but it really depends on the person like you said.
As for the social life, I don't care much about it either, and I shouldn't have made any generalizations since I based my comments on the impressions I had when I visited the school. There were a lot of factors that influenced my impressions. I'll tell you a little secret, though--I'm kind of regretting not having opted to go to UChicago. There's something about that school that I just love.
Well no, I've learned a lot of things and I'm only am a Junior in high school, NOT a U of C student. I just believe you have no right to say whether or not that U of C is a good college because it is obvious you know nothing about it. Plus your arguments make no sense. That's all I have to say and I no longer wish to argue with you.
the very fact that you spend time doing this indicates that you have no life.
it's okay, if you work at starbucks we would all understand that its one of the shittiest periods in your life. Your very bashing indicates you're jealous. prove me wrong bitch without using the same lame comeback, if you can even call it one, every fucking time.
don't mind him, the day that you start taking the words of a mindless troll like openuniverse is the day that you descend to his level. I got into MIT but chose to go to UChicago. You're probably one of those people who derive confidence solely from your ability to socialize. Anybody with a speck of self confidence can do that. Btw, if you can actually tell us what school you go to, we might judge you differently. But as it stands right now, go back to fucking community college.
Well you're obviously not a reasonable person, so I won't continue this any further. I hope you find peace someday because you're clearly a very distressed and disturbed individual. Peace mate.
Define a "real job" for I find it hard to see how an academic one would not classify. And by the way, this past summer I interned in Lima, Peru as a math instructor. I'm quite the "tool" aren't I?
Hi, I accidentally stumbled over this video. I study in Germany. Nice campus in Chicago. A good balance of historical and modern buildings as it seems. I'm just getting in contact with American Universities over scientific literature (MIT Press, Princeton Univ. Press, etc.) To the discussion below: I think an "academic life" with the possibility to accumulate knowledge is not only convenient to find a good job but also for personal development and a higher education. Partys are great too :).
But then, if you provide a credible source that says employment is 0% for U of C graduates whether that's business school graduates or undergrad graduates, then maybe people can start paying serious attention to your statements.
Also, there is a strong correlation between amount of money you earn and how much education one receives (college, B.A, PH.D MD, MBA.) This shows that it is highly unlikely for a U of C graduate to go on to graduate school and suddenly work in starbucks(btw why starbucks? why not Donkin Donuts?)
Mostpeople, if not all, would agree that ranking provided by forbes has more statistical and scientific basis and authority than your bold statement that uchicago kids are eggheads and social retards. Also, you can not be a social retard and gain entrance to top law, med school, MBA, grad school. If you did not know,we live in a competitive world. The admission officers look for socially apt, smart and motivated candidates not social retards when they conduct interviews or review one's application.
hmm.. actually openuniverse2003, the U of C was ranked as one of the top 20 schools ranked as "best college to get rich" by forbes. Also they send the highest percentage of students to pursue a higher degree (graduate school, law school). I am not sure where you got the statistics that shows most of the graduates work at starbucks although I don't think that's a bad thing.. oh btw you can not be rich if you are a social retard..
Knowledge is true power, the money you make isn't worth anything anyway, before 1933 all currency was backed in gold, since 1933 it's not backed in anything, its worth is based on its circulation, at the time of a crisis the gov could take your money and not redeem it
How would you know how wortless a u of c degree is? if you haven't gotton one yourself, well i'm 18 and just graduated from highschool so i don't see anything wrong with a job at starbucks. and stop with this "LULZ" nonsense you sound like an idiot.
why does it matter if they don't have social lives? they have very concrete educations, and honestly at most ivy league schools I wouldn't expect kids to be doing alot outside of their studies anyhow. so this really isn't a step down from anything you're experiencing you brainless sack of excriment.
But tell me this instead, for perhaps it pertains to the matter you have been resting all your jokes upon: is an eduction for the purpose of obtaining employment, and making or acquiring wealth? Is this what you say is the purpose of education? Now, Xanthias, don't merely insult me & run away like a man without his shield. Do your duty and answer like a man. Is wealth the goal we seek when we pursue knowledge?
I agree with you rabmunch, here at JHU, I'm in the hardest med school in the nation as considered by some and we're all here to help people and save lives. None of us are in it for the wealth, or to compete in employment. I am also a double major in English Lit., however let us not judge schools by their English programs....not everyone majors in the same thing, schools are different.
You speak truly, oh vulgar companion! By Zeus, it is true.
But tell me this: what happens to the soul when you die?
Now, Xanthias, don't try to escape from this question, or all will see that like a little mouse you are trying to avoid a hungry cat. Be at least ashamed of this - if not for this, then at least for the sake of your father, whose son you probably are.
Hi, I was reading a post by you on the University of Chicago video. You wanted to know about the selectivity. You'll be surprised. It's admittance rate is upwards of 20%. Now keep in mind it's not a well-known school, so it's qualified people applying. But if you have good grades, write a unique essay, have decent SAT/ACT scores, you'll have a good shot. It's a wonderful school, so by all means apply.
yeah, extremely selective. not a lot of people apply bc of it's reputation of being known as the school where "fun dies." the only reason why the acceptance rate is high is bc not a lot of people apply...and the ones who do are extremely smart. it's a straight out academic school. but it's ranked 9 in the u.s. above other ivy leagues like brown, etc
it's not always about GPA. my average was only a 93% weighted. wow ted o'neil with your essays; don't be afraid to take a philosophical viewpoint when regarding your life as you've summed it up for the admissions committee either, and be passionate about everything you've done so far.
ok i have a question "beutigulmedley" how is the cost of living over there and the parties if you know what i mean anyways right now am attending a cummunity college to take some general courses to transfer to ohio state but i was thinking of going out of state and the first came to my mind was chicago and because my dad always visits there and i was looking for a way to find a brochure to find out the prerequisites so can you please help me?
Don't believe the infamous quote 'Where fun comes to die'. That was a stupid joke made by overworked graduate students, and it does not reflect the experience the college provides. If you so choose, you will have as much fun and go to as many parties at Uchicago as you would anywhere else.
I was there in the 80s. Best thing I ever did with my life. I miss it so much. There was so much wit and humor--I felt like I was coming home when I first arrived there. It was brutal and welcoming. Everything that came out of your mouth was open to challenge. There was such an education to be had outside of class.
I shall be attending the University of Chicago in the fall. I am quite excited. Not only is Chicago ranked #1 for the "best overall academic experience for undergraduates," but is is also affiliated with more Nobel laureates than any other school in the United States! It is a "cerebral institution."
i love watching this! it makes me want to laugh at my friend who picked brown over u of c because they had a higher ranking. yayyy uchicago! the fun isn't dead yet...
So I got accepted to UCHicago, but I dont know.. is it really that stressful? People say it's really tough and not much fun. Anyone from UChicago want to give direct opinions? Anything appreciated, earnestness and candor preferred.

DO NOT GO. It is a pure nerd school... you will have NO FUN WHATSOEVER. Go to Northwestern... or somewhere else

jem7992 2 years ago
I don't think people apply (or are accepted) to Chicago thinking it's a party school. The Office of Admissions works hard to admit only people who "take pleasure in learning."
AlvinHDavernport 2 years ago
I would certainly agree with you, but i know chicago well and there is NOTHING social going on there at all.
jem7992 2 years ago
I went there a couple of weeks ago. It's not as socially active as Northwestern could be, for example. People are rather cold in general, or that was my impression.
But I'm not saying it's not a good school. If you don't care about social life at all, there is no better school in the world than Chicago—its academic intensity is simply unparalleled. But if you're looking for a well-rounded college experience, other top institutions will do.
AlvinHDavernport 2 years ago
Well I can't tell you off since I myself don't care about social life- lol. But nonetheless I have made many friends here. Dozens of close ones too. Idk, maybe it's our class in particular but the people are NOT cold...trust me. But it's a great social scene- of course I would say that Northwestern, Loyola, and DePaul do have more (the other Chicago schools) and the state schools double what exists here- but it really depends on the person like you said.
TomCat2800 2 years ago
As for the social life, I don't care much about it either, and I shouldn't have made any generalizations since I based my comments on the impressions I had when I visited the school. There were a lot of factors that influenced my impressions. I'll tell you a little secret, though--I'm kind of regretting not having opted to go to UChicago. There's something about that school that I just love.
AlvinHDavernport 2 years ago
:( i want to go to the university of chicago!
shnepple 2 years ago
Well no, I've learned a lot of things and I'm only am a Junior in high school, NOT a U of C student. I just believe you have no right to say whether or not that U of C is a good college because it is obvious you know nothing about it. Plus your arguments make no sense. That's all I have to say and I no longer wish to argue with you.
HeliosTG 3 years ago
Except for the fact that I know my grammar and do not confuse "you're" with "your". Right...

looong commmment!!
rabidmule 3 years ago
the very fact that you spend time doing this indicates that you have no life.
it's okay, if you work at starbucks we would all understand that its one of the shittiest periods in your life. Your very bashing indicates you're jealous. prove me wrong bitch without using the same lame comeback, if you can even call it one, every fucking time.
varlian123 3 years ago
don't mind him, the day that you start taking the words of a mindless troll like openuniverse is the day that you descend to his level. I got into MIT but chose to go to UChicago. You're probably one of those people who derive confidence solely from your ability to socialize. Anybody with a speck of self confidence can do that. Btw, if you can actually tell us what school you go to, we might judge you differently. But as it stands right now, go back to fucking community college.
varlian123 3 years ago
Well you're obviously not a reasonable person, so I won't continue this any further. I hope you find peace someday because you're clearly a very distressed and disturbed individual. Peace mate.
sxsepu 3 years ago
Define a "real job" for I find it hard to see how an academic one would not classify. And by the way, this past summer I interned in Lima, Peru as a math instructor. I'm quite the "tool" aren't I?
sxsepu 3 years ago
Hi, I accidentally stumbled over this video. I study in Germany. Nice campus in Chicago. A good balance of historical and modern buildings as it seems. I'm just getting in contact with American Universities over scientific literature (MIT Press, Princeton Univ. Press, etc.) To the discussion below: I think an "academic life" with the possibility to accumulate knowledge is not only convenient to find a good job but also for personal development and a higher education. Partys are great too :).

People outside U.S have a stereotype that Harvard is the best university in the world. There is even no stereotype for University of Chicago.
iwant2sleep 3 years ago
But then, if you provide a credible source that says employment is 0% for U of C graduates whether that's business school graduates or undergrad graduates, then maybe people can start paying serious attention to your statements.
nyloverwashington 3 years ago
Also, there is a strong correlation between amount of money you earn and how much education one receives (college, B.A, PH.D MD, MBA.) This shows that it is highly unlikely for a U of C graduate to go on to graduate school and suddenly work in starbucks(btw why starbucks? why not Donkin Donuts?)
nyloverwashington 3 years ago
Mostpeople, if not all, would agree that ranking provided by forbes has more statistical and scientific basis and authority than your bold statement that uchicago kids are eggheads and social retards. Also, you can not be a social retard and gain entrance to top law, med school, MBA, grad school. If you did not know,we live in a competitive world. The admission officers look for socially apt, smart and motivated candidates not social retards when they conduct interviews or review one's application.
nyloverwashington 3 years ago
hmm.. actually openuniverse2003, the U of C was ranked as one of the top 20 schools ranked as "best college to get rich" by forbes. Also they send the highest percentage of students to pursue a higher degree (graduate school, law school). I am not sure where you got the statistics that shows most of the graduates work at starbucks although I don't think that's a bad thing.. oh btw you can not be rich if you are a social retard..
nyloverwashington 3 years ago
at least we'll have learned to communicate our salutions a tad more eloquently than "LULZ!"
rockyraccoon44 3 years ago
Wow MIT ranks hardest to get into? Four of my HS friends went there. Good for them. However I have that book and it's great!
TomCat2800 3 years ago
this is a response to the argument posted below:
Knowledge is true power, the money you make isn't worth anything anyway, before 1933 all currency was backed in gold, since 1933 it's not backed in anything, its worth is based on its circulation, at the time of a crisis the gov could take your money and not redeem it
ThaRussian 3 years ago
How would you know how wortless a u of c degree is? if you haven't gotton one yourself, well i'm 18 and just graduated from highschool so i don't see anything wrong with a job at starbucks. and stop with this "LULZ" nonsense you sound like an idiot.
Miken315 3 years ago
why does it matter if they don't have social lives? they have very concrete educations, and honestly at most ivy league schools I wouldn't expect kids to be doing alot outside of their studies anyhow. so this really isn't a step down from anything you're experiencing you brainless sack of excriment.
aesrp 3 years ago
I knew you wouldn't answer. By Zeus, I knew it.
Is wealth the goal we seek when we pursue knowledge?
rabmunch 3 years ago
I agree with you rabmunch, here at JHU, I'm in the hardest med school in the nation as considered by some and we're all here to help people and save lives. None of us are in it for the wealth, or to compete in employment. I am also a double major in English Lit., however let us not judge schools by their English programs....not everyone majors in the same thing, schools are different.
TomCat2800 3 years ago
You speak truly, oh vulgar companion! By Zeus, it is true.
But tell me this: what happens to the soul when you die?
Now, Xanthias, don't try to escape from this question, or all will see that like a little mouse you are trying to avoid a hungry cat. Be at least ashamed of this - if not for this, then at least for the sake of your father, whose son you probably are.
rabmunch 3 years ago
I am grateful for your comments.
I dub you: Xanthias. From now on that is your new name; wear it proudly.
Bend over, and be prepared for Priapus. The god shall make you feel his anger.
rabmunch 3 years ago
I see that you, Mr. Universe, are from Beverly Hills.
I wonder if that has had any fallout on your vanities, your bad taste, and your faulty judgement.
I detect more than a little resentment. The fellows from Harvard don't need to ridicule Chicago. They ignore us with sovereign contempt.
rabmunch 3 years ago
I like uchicago very much.
in an unrelated rant, the princeton review ranks are are completely retarded

Is UC extremely selective in its admissions?
yooons 3 years ago
i believe so. you can find out by looking on princeton review.
jonnyb619 3 years ago
Hi, I was reading a post by you on the University of Chicago video. You wanted to know about the selectivity. You'll be surprised. It's admittance rate is upwards of 20%. Now keep in mind it's not a well-known school, so it's qualified people applying. But if you have good grades, write a unique essay, have decent SAT/ACT scores, you'll have a good shot. It's a wonderful school, so by all means apply.
Giantdwarf34 3 years ago
yeah, extremely selective. not a lot of people apply bc of it's reputation of being known as the school where "fun dies." the only reason why the acceptance rate is high is bc not a lot of people apply...and the ones who do are extremely smart. it's a straight out academic school. but it's ranked 9 in the u.s. above other ivy leagues like brown, etc

jonnyb619 3 years ago
it's not always about GPA. my average was only a 93% weighted. wow ted o'neil with your essays; don't be afraid to take a philosophical viewpoint when regarding your life as you've summed it up for the admissions committee either, and be passionate about everything you've done so far.

cherrylablue9 3 years ago
