I guess Wutai'd be pretty hard for players who customise their characters for magic and summons. I didn't find it any problem, but then I only really use enemy skill and a couple of support materias for most of the game. really helps if you know the event is coming too, can get a little powerlevelling in on the lightning birds and stock up on x-potions from drops.

@Cloudnerd I'm a little disappointed that the FF community are still crying over Yuffie stealing your Materia over a decade after the fact. It's not even that big of a problem, if you've been leveling properly you should be able to handle that little sidequest without any problems.

It depends on your level and how much Materia you have in stock. She only takes I believe like 80-100 of it by color they was introduced in the game. Like Green first then Yellow, blue etc.

If you are under level and only had like 23 materia then yeah it was ass. If you spent time mastering the materia or getting the cures and attacks to level 2 (She also go by number) then you would have more than enough to get there and serve her.

She does steal every piece of materia you have. But after you save her she gives it all back.

She steals your materia if you go to a certain place in the game (wutai, her homeland). Its optional and you can go there at basically any time in the 1st and 2nd Discs. Of course, if you go there really early on, she'll take basically all of your materia and The enemies can be very difficult (you can get this sidequest as early as level 17 or there about). On the pther hand you could come back much later with much more materia. She'll be unable to steal All of it and it will be much easier.

Materia are basically spheres of energy from the lifestream. They posess unique powers.

When a materia is equiped by a party member, they gain the skill that the Materia Holds.

For example, there may be a "fire materia" and the holder learns the spell "Fire"

I wouldn't exactly call them 'energies' of the lifestream.

As Sephiroth stated during the Nibelheim flashback, materia is the preserved knowledge of the ancients(The Cetra) that bonded with the lifestream. Materia can be produced in two different ways.

1.) Compressing the Mako energy(The Lifestream) into a condensed stated.

2.) Natural condensation of the energy.

It seems you've never played FFVII. Aside from the small problem of her getting killed off (which can be solved by hacking her back in), she's a great character. Massive MP and Magic stats, very early access to weapons that give lots of Materia slots, and a Limit Break that cures everyone and turns them invincible?
