I don't see why so many comments are negative here..yes some people think they could make a sound film with this M.O.S. camera, so they want to know how loud, this video demonstrates what you cant tell some people...TOO LOUD. There is plenty of irrelevant video on her, so stop giving this guy a hard time.
Thanks for this short demo. Although I am full deaf and currently owning an Arriflex IIB 35mm camera ( Please see my filmmaking activities there ) as I made several deaf-drama short films from original-shot 35mm film format. Most of my films was shot without any sound recording on set, as gladly that us deaf performers are taking sign languages without voice. Please see my award-winning shorties including " Blue Gush " which was shot from Arriflex IIB 35mm camera. Enjoy !
@bunkofurko film making the camera quieter might be true of your 2C, I don't know, but it is not of mine. Running this small test did my camera no appreciable damage, and even if it did the value of the video seems to have been worth it.
Many aspiring filmmakers are used to shooting on HD because it's cheap and available. We've never experienced the noise of any 35mm camera. Some comments ask, "Why do the test if this is an MOS camera?" Even as a demonstration, I found this quite informative.
They are also made in anechoic chambers, but I thought I would give a more useful measurement. In this case a measurement in a commonly sized room with materials that are likely to be encountered on a location shoot.
I have been on many shoots where the camera is much less than 3 meters away. I understand that the 3 meter rule is to compare apples with apples but I wanted to show how noisy the camera is at the closest shooting distance likely to be encountered, a usable demo if you will.
Thanks for posting this video...I have a Mitchell BNCR and it's heavy as hell...so I've been thinking about getting an Arri 2 B or Arri 2 C....for fighting or action, or not speaking scene's..and always wondered if the sound would be too distracting for the actor's ....is there anyway you could do this again but show us what it sounds like with a blimp on the Arri 2 ...Thanks..
Thank you so much for making this video! I am an independent filmmaker, trying to make the transition from Super 16 to 35mm - and there aren't many affordable options. But there are a lot of Arri IIC's available on ebay. The camera is LOUD AS HELL. I think I'll look for a BL with the blimp housing...
So, how do you get most of the camera noise out of the film...with some sort of sound editing? What about using a Arri with a crystal sync motor? I would like to know more about this, as I am thinking of planning a short film project. Thanks
What is the point of this video. Every one knows all none-sync cameras are loud as hell. Just MOS. I'd give anything to have an Arri 2c. Its a tough as hell camera and is reliable. You can't beat that
Stupid??? Ok...Mr. Dumb-ass Techhead. You can go out and buy a film camera and instead of running film though it; spend your time and money recording how loud it is. What a fascinating hobby. I can see you enjoy listening to camera decibles rather than seeing images. You must REALLY be having issues when it comes to recording the decibles of a video camera. Life must suck since you got dropped on your head as a baby.
Many folks that want to get into 35mm film the cheapest way they can and look at the arri 2 cameras as an option. They often ask "how loud is the the camera?" Thinking they may be able to use it if they are far enough away from the subject. In some cases where the ambient noise exceeds the the noise the of the camera (when a long enough lens and wireless mikes are used) the it will work, but its the exception not the rule. This video demonstrates that the camera is too loud to use most always.
Ah, the blimp. I will eventually get to it. It makes a huge difference, but I would prefer to demonstrate rather than you simply taking my word for it.
Finally someone calls me on what I thought what as obvious omission!
No, for this test there was no film in the camera.
However, the volume levels that this camera puts out I doubt that the sound of film flapping around in the camera body would make a significant difference.
No it is an old BNCR mount. I am in the market for more BNCR mount lenses. I find them more sturdy than the PL,even though PL mount lenses are much, much easier to rent.

could you please record it with the blimp on, and also with a sort of DIY blimp?- like 2 leather jackets, just to compare?
thanks

This is why it's an MOS camera. ;)
Just shoot with a guide track and post-sync your sound. Problem solved.

Part of the reason of why I bought one 20 years ago.

Thank you for the test, but official db measurements are always made at 3 meters or 10 feet --- never at 3 feet.

All sound men are, like drummers, certifiably insane.
It's called "Keith Moon Syndrome", even when applied to sound technicians.

Yeah, the Arri II is a tornado. There were two instances where I got away with it while recording sync:
A) I was shooting outdoors in an industrial neighborhood with a 50mm lens (a medium shot), and
B) when I was filming actors inside of a Humvy, from outdoors using a 50mm.
The rest of the time - forget it. No leather or down jacket is going to quiet that bugger, you need that dreadfully heavy blimp!

It sure is a pretty sound! A pity more filmmakers dont incorporate that lovely background noise into thier projects.

Such a nice test for such an obviously too loud camera. Why did you do this?
Dlachm1 3 years ago
Interesting. An obvious point though, what about using a blimp? Or was this just to show how noisy this particular camera is?

So, in other words, if youre ever going to film a scene where someone is vacuuming or using a blender, this is the ideal camera.
I have a 16mm Arri S....I know what it's like.
Nice video. Good job.
