This tune is so haunting. I must have repeated it something like 50 times. I never heard it before. I can't get it out of my head and I wasn't even born when it was made. Great stuff, and nice vid.
@mrtomkoz Here's a shocker for you - Ray Conniff, perceived as an elevator music guy, was the arranger & conductor on this 1957 song! The voice is Marty Robbins, but the SOUND of this song, why it stuck in your head -THAT"S Ray Conniff. As the youngsters say, he was a BEAST!
In the early '50s, Conniff stripped #1 songs down to their DNA - he knew what the parts were that made a hit song. Columbia hired him in 1955 to create hits, and he did, for Johnny Mathis & Guy Mitchell too!
At my 50th HS reunion last Oct, they played this while showing pics of the prom. Everyone started humming along to themselves, but the collective effect was absolutely electrifying.
@steveknows62 You have Ray Conniff to thank for that electrifying effect (see my other comment on this video) at your reunion! Marty sang the song, but it was Conniff who set the mood, created the 'feel' of this song. Ray Conniff is one of the most unheralded masters of American Music.
Marty's 'The Story of My Life' was also scored & conducted by Conniff, but get THIS: THAT song was the first that Burt Bacharach & Hal David wrote together! Ray Conniff scored the first song by Bacharach & David!
i meet marty when i was 13 standing at the back of the line waiting 4 his autograph he comes up to me tells me i dont have to wait becouse i was having breathing problems guided me to the front left a real good impression on me good man

This video really makes my day. I LOVE IT and what a great tribute to your grandparents. Back in those days, everything was so much different than nowadays. The moral fiber of this country has gone to pieces. I can't imagine many young people today who would appreciate a video like this, a song like this and the era it comes out of. Great post!
This takes me back to my days of lying on the beach with my transistor radio
on Georgian Bay in Ontario and I guess you could say rhapsodizing to these sounds. Beautiful singer songwriter Marty Robbins RIP, like the beautiful arranger
As long as the music plays, your folks will always live, in spirit, in the heart and in the memory of all those who have ever loved...What a beautiful tribute to lovely people. Pls. keep them always in mind; I am certain they are smiling down at you from Heaven. Thanks again!
Thank you for sharing this family album...the song makes it all the more a tug of the heart cuz of my Grandparents and my memories of them...thanks again.
This song was all the rage in '57, when I graduated h.s. Unfortunately, or not, I missed graduation ceremonies. Was in hospital with the same problem that made Rush Limbaugh "miss" the military
service (poor baby!), a pilonoidal cyst excision. Had to have it removed, again, in AF. What fun! They used local anes-
thetic. Not bad. Spinal tap, 1st time, gave me headaches 2 wks., when sitting/stan-
ding. Rough! BTW, Marty's great, as usual. Conniff, too.
@JERE29MAD I don't know the picker's name, but Marty was backed by the legendary Ray Conniff, his orchestra and singers. Conniff was one of the greatest arrangers ever and each song he backed up was usually a hit. Some of them are "Singin' the Blues" by Guy Mitchell, "Chances Are" and "It's Not For Me To Say" by Johnny Mathis, "Band of Gold" by Don Cherry the singer and "Just Walkin' In the Rain" by Johnnie Ray. Mitch Miller was the A&R guy for Columbia Records when all of these songs were hits.
Marty wrote this song after driving past a high school on his way to perform at a concert and he saw this guy going into the Prom who was alone. Later that night, he wrote this song.
i just love your whole video reminds me of day gone by but not forgotten ..........yes those were the years ....music brings people so close although they will never meet thanks again
I was so glad when this song came out. Guy Mitchell was covering all Marty's songs and getting all the pop play. I told a friend, just wait, Marty will be coming out with something real soon that will leave Mitchell in the dust. Soon after I saw this song on the jukebox.
BTW, I do like Guy Mitchell a lot, but not his Marty Robbins covers.
One of my favorite things about music/songs is that sometimes you can remember specifically where you were at when you heard them (or first heard them, etc..)
Everytime I listen to this song I tear up because my dad played it when we were riding around back in Detroit. My dad as I do love Country music. It would trip me out when I was a kid eeeerrr younger because not alot of black folks listened to country. We did and I thank my dad for it..

What does a song about being dumped before a dance have to do with an anniversary? I'm sure they were real happy that you chose a song about being lonely for their golden anniversary. Get a clue people!

this is just another example of great old country music that i still enjoy to this day. i rember listening to songs like this. it does remind me of when i was a kid and when this came out, it was durning simpler times. and great times just being a kid, and also it reminds me of fall after noons of just playing in the piles of leaves

Marty is way out of C&W and into pop on this one. Employing the "sound" of '58. It paid off because this was a big hit competing against Elvis, Ricky Nelson and all the reigning gods of the period.
Talk about Pure/Simple and lots of class.Great recording sound as well. This comes from a very loud rock guitar player. You just have to tip your hat with respect to an artist like this.I just love this pure sound and song as well.
What a wonderful tribute to your parents! THEIR generation really meant "for better or worse", dug in their heels in the rough times and worked to make their marriages last. You can't say that about MY generation of forty-somethings. Bunch of whiney slackers.
Outstanding. I love looking at old photos and you've got all the best parts of a shared life right here in this beautiful video. And I want that old Willy's jeep!
Funny...when I WAS 14, I liked stuff like this, but couldn't admit it (at the risk of not being "cool"! [lol!]). Now, at 45, I can like what I want, no matter who cares! I love the "bum-bum" background vocals; sounds like the guy is under water!
No, That does not mean your weird, but infact, very normal! I wish more of the younger generation would appreciate the older music instead of the stuff they have now! I know times have changed but the older music did not promote violence and drugs with the acception of a few 60s and 70s songs talking about drugs.
