At the beginning of the movie when Casey's dad tells his wife to go to the family down the street, it's another reference to a scary movie. I just can't remember which one. There are a lot of easter eggs for horror film fans.

Subsequently, the addition of the scene gave Kevin Williamson a good reason to have all the party guests leave the party near the climax.

Billy strung him up by the goalposts, and when it was necessary, Billy or Stu phoned the house to get the drunk guys to leave. I hate to be critical, but when you see ghostface inside the supermarket, that moment is both creepy and unrealistic. think about it: if the killers mask has already been publicized, would you be walking around wearing it in broad daylight. It does work for this film, because "Scream" is self referencing/self parody-ing horror films, and you always see that kind of thing in horror films.
