  • Whoosh!

  • that was funny i laughed hahahahehehehe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!☺☻o☺☺☺☺☻☻☻☻♥♥♥♥♥♥♪

    ♥♥☺☻♥

  • how do you make these things?

  • @Nighthawkinlight : can this mixture be contained in a reasonably sturdy cardboard tube WITHOUT getting louder? I don't want an explosion, just a flash. No need to reply if you are busy or I should just do the relevant research myself-I just don't want to waste expensive Mg powder. BTW: love your work, your sodium tutorial is also marvelous!

  • @MrDestructionAddict No, it will get loud with confinement.

  • @MrDestructionAddict pressure is indirect relationship between size of container and pressure. smaller container = higher pressure = louder sound.

  • @xMcallisteRx :there is my trouble. I can't believe I didn't see this before. I think I will make a cylinder perforated axially with many holes, covered with tape. this will offer containment but not much confinement. THANKS for the idea, man!

  • @MrDestructionAddict

maybe if you wrapped it in a couple layers of flashpaper, and theyd be like little flash sachels

  • @edvinasj1 : Dude, I'm rather sure Nighthawk is aware of that already. Call it a hunch.

  • Is ja geil XD

Whats the mixture and how much was each pot?

  • home made flash bang hehe

  • That could make the best cannon ever! I'm planning to make a hand-held cannon with that.

  • @edvinasj1 haha, genius right here. Nighthawk, you need to take this guys advice lol

  • @davis050594 : LMFAO!

  • Would this work with 400 mesh bright aluminum flake powder?

  • @Berryice1 Yes, it likely would. Try it and find out.

  • Actually, If memory serves, The reason why it is so energetic is partly due to the oxidizer in black powder; potassium nitrate. It undergoes a side reaction with KNO3 to produce MgO. It's the same as lighting magnesium metal with a torch... just thousands of times faster!

  • magnesium was used alot during ww2 as a bomb. still used today. cluster bombs are magnesium. oh ya there is also a way to make a candle light up with a magnesium stick

  • You need to read up a little more.

  • yes it is, the german cluster bomblet was the first to do so. it was filled with magnesium and it was made to be dropped on buildings like made of wood then catch it on fire. then the americans made their versions wich was bigger and used it alot on japan, it burned and killed more then both a bombs put together

  • wow didnt exect them to be that big lol i kinda jumped. that was badass oh & 10* on the homemade hangdrum intro that was awsome. sorry if off subject but hows the hangdrum playing & trapping been going? ALOHA

  • No trapping for a while. Hang drum is sounding good. I have an offer from an individual wanting to purchase it, which I will likely take once I build a new one this summer.

  • Hey there Nighthawkinlight,

I just wanted to toss this idea your way. Try using potassium permanganate instead of black powder. Same effect and cheaper too because the KMnO4 is used in a much smaller quantity. You won't have to use your valuable B.P..

I find it easier myself to do this. KMnO4 is very easy to get. Shoot me a message and I can hook you up with a great source!

Once I get more supplies again, I'll upload a video. Also, the Mg can be in turnings if KMnO4 is used! Safer to handle.

  • The reason KMnO4 is not used in respectable pyrotechnic circles is because it is dangerous. Nearly every composition KMnO4 is used in by beginners has the potential to spontaneously combust. KMnO4/Mg is near the top of the danger list. Mg is not even commonly used with KClO4 because of the danger, and that is far safer than KMnO4.

  • what mesh mg do u have?

  • -200

  • is it from ebay? thats were i got mine. and what kind of magnesium powder is that in ur sodium makin vid?

  • No it is from a personal contact. -200 mesh Mg used for German tracer rounds in WW2. The Mg in my sodium videos is from ebay. It was a little I had left over from a good 5 years ago.

  • how come its so white compared to mine

  • Perhaps yours is coated in dichromate. Mg is naturally silver/white.

  • mine is sliver but urs is so white

  • cool. would it be cool to add some red gum to create a nice pyroball ? i think that when u keep a opening between the side's of the red gum and fp in the flashpot, it wont actually bang, still might ofc +5 very cool effects

  • Your eyes would never adjust in time to see a fireball after a flash of Mg.

  • didnt thought of that.youre right, to bright

  • FLASHBANG !

  • Without the bang and a hell of a lot more smoke

  • lol nice mushroom cloud's

  • i like your intro

  • how was that dumb

  • this is perfect for special effect explosions!

  • oh noz hes making mini nukes run fer the hillz.

wicked stuff, that stuff has always facinated me for some odd reason

  • OMG mah corneas!

  • I can do that after eating at taco bell.

  • was that just magnesium?

  • Lifted into the air via black powder.

  • thats cool :)

  • good stuff man, like always!!

I'm a little curious about your hang drum too. I'm a percussionist and I think it would be cool to make one. Did you use plans or make it from scratch?

  • Thanks

There are currently no plans of any sort for making a hang drum, so I instead learned all I could about how steel drums are made and modified the techniques.

I am not quite done with the drum. It needs to be sent into a machine shop to cut the skirt of the barrel off right at the rim. It also does not currently have the resonating bottom half, but I think I won't bother making that before I put up a video.

I plan on making another, I'll worry about perfection the second time through.

  • Also, the video I make will be a tutorial of sorts, though I did not film the building of this drum very well. It will be mostly still images. I will again make a tutorial when I build my second and do a better job documenting.

  • Ok I'm now legally BLIND! SO MANY SPOTS -.-...

  • oh, it blinded me!

  • Sounds like someone got themself a steel drum.

    Another great video.

  • Very nice! Would like to see in complete darkness.

  • Pretty cool hawk. I made one of these using a 5/16 tube , a hell of a flash and super quiet.

I wonder if they can go thermobaric if the particle size is fine enough?

  • Yes, I have heard they easily can, simply by using to much Mg.

  • can you put like something on the flash powder to like blow it in the sky?

  • Nah.. If you want to blow something in the sky you use corned black powder or pulverone. Flash is way to powerfull.

  • KMNO4 potassium permanganate is easy to get hold of, but it's supposed to be unstable as an oxidiser. Magnesium is the most reactive metal used in pryo. So although it would work, if you repeated the flash enough times it could self ignite. I think the problem is more organic impurities than the actual metal.

Another dangerous oxidiser is Calcium hypochlorite (pool chlorine). A lot of fires happen in rubbish bins and trucks due to people throwing that out in the trash. self ignition occuring.

  • Still seeing spots?

  • For hours ;)

  • I like the sound of this hang drum... The "rough" sound is great. I say keep it like it is.

    Also, "OOOOooooh, flashy".

  • Wow that is one bright flash, i wonder, for your next video you could show us/me how to make a visco fuse rocket, you could even include and flash like this at the end. Cheers, UpdUp

  • Ah, good idea. Not for my next video, I already have a few planned, but perhaps soon.

  • Great Flashes !!!

At Night That Would Be Blinding !!!

I Can't Seem To Get Hold Of Mg Powder, I Can Only Get Mg Ribbon !!!

  • yeah i have a load of MG ribbon can it be safely turned into powder in any way? thanks

  • Nope. Mg powder is not easily made by a home chemist/firework builder.

  • u hit the tin that u used in the video to hold th bp mg mix for the begining 'music'?

  • i wouldnt know what the begin is xD but nice Magnesium dude :) gj, nice flashes, but u should make a vid in a whole dark night :P or a salute with magnesium :D

  • Kettle drum?

    Steel drum?

    possibly metal congos! :D

  • Hang drum! Close in all guesses. I have updated the video description to give more details...

  • Aiee...my eyes, they burn...did you get this idea off my thread on APC?:P

  • Nope, actually I had these clips filmed weeks ago but have had other videos to upload. I try not to put up more than a video or two a week to give time for my viewers to keep up.

  • pleeeease make with kmno4 mg :P please

  • KmNO4 is not suitable for fireworks.

  • no (: too sensitive.. im no ass but its .......... KMnO4 q: but wanna see those things go BOOM xD

  • Yes, pardon my shift key...

  • sry q: btw is it possible to make other NO4's? or is there only KMnO4?

  • There are several. Perchlorate is the only one suitable for pyrotechnics however.

  • hm.. what other permanganates are there?

  • Many. Just about any reactive metal, as well as some groups such as ammonium.

  • ok.. but how come no other than potassium permanganate is used if pyro technics? and would if work if i used aluminium instead of magnesium in BP? thats kinda related to this... is magnesium brighter than AL and isnt magnesium the most powerful?

  • nice flash! going to buy some mg soon...5/5 you rock man!

  • Thanks!

  • Bice flash and smoke cloud

  • last one was a big flash :o

  • is your blackpowder homemade?

  • Yes, ball milled and granulated.

  • Kettle drum

  • kettle drum

  • oil drums?

  • holy shit :D

  • insturment in the begining is steel pan ?

  • Yes, of sorts. Great job! I'm impressed. It is in fact a hang drum I have been building for the last week and is not yet completed. It is only roughly tuned for now. I will have a video of how I built it coming in another week or so.

  • wow thats was bright as hell, Nice! would be cool to see at night:)

  • Yep. Due to light flooding though the camera would not pick them up very well. That can start to bee seen in the last one.

  • yeah, i noticed that...i got the picture. thanks again!
