Its funny you should mention 9 million because that also happens to be the amount of estimated tourists visited the UK in 2011. Frankly, id be astonished if 9% of that 9 million came here to visit Buckingham palace. we also wouldn't be buying the royals land off them, its ours. so, we save 9 Mill a year, and use that money to build cost effective housing on the many acres of royal land for the homeless and poor ... this getting rid of the royals is sounding better by the second
Yep, the Royals are a drain on us and only serve as a slap in the face to those living in poverty. 200 yrs ago this lot used to raid UK towns for the kings taxes.
I'm a big fan of Doug but he does miss the point of royalty. A massive amount of the U.S. President's time is spent on ceremonial duties. You can't really spend time getting laws passed when you have that obligation. If you have a monarch to do it instead it means the PM doesn't have to. Plus we get to play Dungeons & Dragons every Tuesday which is nice.
@PrometheanRunGood The cermonial duties performed by any head of state are important, otherwise the U.S. would have the vice President do them. They're just time-consuming. It's important to fly to Africa and exchange gifts with the President of Ghana to keep relations strong, but if the PM had to do all that who'd attend to affairs of state? They mention this in an episode of The West Wing.
Why do nations have to pay for the up keep of royal families who can actually take care of themselves ? The Queen officially isnt supposed to run business interests but im afraid you'll find that she does. Its all two faced nonsense and people like Stanhope, and Bill Hicks before him, can see through the act.
@WeGetAllKindsHere The civil list pays about £9million p/a to the royals. In terms of national turnover it's peanuts. If we didn't pay that and got rid of the monarchy, the logistics of re-writing all property law, creating a new framework of Government so we could pass them, then buy all of the Queen's land off her, not to mention losing what the royals bring in through tourism and possibly starting a war in Europe would cost a lot more. Also Bill Hicks had nothing against royalty.
@vegetto101 So leave.. What is stopping you? NOTHING! Give your balls some freedom and sell everything you have (sell your neighbours shit as well..) and go to India or something. Live on a beach surviving on coconuts and left over drugs.
Do anything.. but STOP FUCKING COMPLAINING UNLESS YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
@azynkron Your a twat. Become a doctor might be good advice ....piss off to india and live off coconuts and left over drugs ....what are you ...a university student? I've never heard such twoddle guised as advice.
@temporaldisplacement So, if you don't like the advise, JUST SHUT YOUR FUCKING PIE HOLE, you whining little cunt! Sit there in your own little misery and feel sorry for yourself, but stop fucking whining about it, twat.
Love your insights Doug, you do speak the truth, but... what do you make of those 9 black robed monarchs called the Supreme Court? They're not democratically elected officials, their purpose is supposed to interpret the Constitution, yet one has to look no further than Citizen United to see through the corporate smokescreen and the consequent reduction of personal liberty that inherently stems from that decision, so no Doug, I say back to the drawing board w/ this bit. Still very funny, though.
@molinari71 Theyre elected by congress and appointed by the president. All of whom are elected. Who elected the supreme court and House of Lords in Britain again?
Doug is right though, the Royal Family have been bleeding the UK dry for years now.
Our current government is making a big deal about benefit (welfare) scroungers, i cannot think of any family that fits that description more than the royal family.
And i don't by that rubbish that they bring in lots of tourist money, what thet bring it is far out weighed by how much they cost us. And its not just the daily up keep, we pay for all of their weddings, funerals etc.
It's already been said, but I'll repeat it because I find the lumping together of Stanhope and Boyle to be galling..
Stanhope is a brilliant and witty individual whose style of comedy is original to say the least. Boyle is a man who knows how to pretend to be ironic and call people 'spastics' and 'cunts' and feckless idiots applaud these meaningless jokes. At least Stanhope has SOMETHING to him, he doesn't survive by calling Jordan a cunt..
Taste is subjective i think. I also think stanhope would probably find frankie boyle quite funny. clearly they both have different styles, but there's room for all sorts. i do take issue with being labelled an idiot because i find Boyle funny.
When I first discovered him I found him very intriguing to watch. Over time his child like negativity has started to wear thin. His last appearance in Oslo there is probably dropping him out of my personal top 5. It's starting to get sad.
@WestCoastPCbuilder Oh come on... Stanhope is a VERY rare breed. He literally does not give a fuck. Kinda like Bill Hicks - but WITHOUT the material. In one sense it's 'sad' & I get that... But at the end of the day - Doug is a retired intellectual who has a girlfriend, and has just (like carlin) given up on the retardation of the masses - no harm done, and also very funny!
@Marronisince1990 Awesome description of Doug. One thing I admire about him is that he has reached in his 30's the bitterness level that George achieved at 60 years old or so.

For the record, I'm not arguing against Doug's bit, I'm simply expanding on it: all I'm saying is it looks like the kettle is calling the pot black.
