The best version is Mary MacGregor's. Someone should release her "Greatest Hits" LP in CD as well as her main 3 albums. She had several singles that were not on those albums like "Sayonara". What a voice!!!!

I remember hearing this back in '77... and when the Charlene version became a hit five years later, I remembered Mary's version. But my favorite version is the one by the Temptations (on their Reunion album).

I prefer Charlene's version to this one, because this one is too fast...This song, being a reflective and somewhat somber one, ought to be done slowly...Now that I've heard Mary do Charlene's signature song, I wish that Charlene had done Mary's signature song, "Torn Between Two Lovers".

I like Mary's voice but the music dub is like she is on a treadmill trying to keep up with it or the music is trying is trying to get the last word. Their seems to be a competitive vibe between the two.

This is the best version of this song...it was a big hit for Mary in Canada. Mary MacGregor, what a voice!!!! Someone should make all her music available on CD. She charted with "Good Friend","This Girl has Turned into a Woman","Dancing Like Lovers","The Wedding Song","For a While" and "Torn Beetween 2 Lovers", also had international hits with "Memories" and "Sayonara". I like her 90s song "Take it to Heart". Her Greatest Hits record was released in Asia,hopefully they can release it in CD!!!

This version is better than than the Charlene version. More up tempo and less melodramatic. Also the mid-narrative in Charlene's version is overkill and breaks up the song's momentum. Sometimes less is more

Boy, was this a song designed to make so many people, women AND men, fall into the trap of love and marriage! It would bear much more relevance if the divorce rate was not at 50%, the unhappy and miserable but still married at another 30%, and with most "lovely children" getting drunk, taking drugs, having sex, and telling their parents and teachers to f--- off!
