Its the dirties city in the WORLD....almost 3/4th of the city is a slum....the hoogly river is once giant sewer..its brown...and filty..theress a stench everywhere u go....

A city is not just about the roads and buildings that stand there......it's about the spirit of the place. Agreed, that strikes and unions are tearing it apart, but there's something about the soul of the city. i've moved out and lived in so many places after that, but calcutta is always the most special. The top-man of Lonely Planet, in an interview once said that of all the cities he'd ever covered, Calcutta was the one tht had touched his heart the most :) kuch to baat hai na phir? :)

Had you seen Roland Joffe's film, you would have called Calcutta "City of Horrors". That's for sure. That film is one of the grossest western misrepresentations of Calcutta.

Please refrain from using a title that brought shame to Calcutta -- at least in the western media. Western tourists only find poverty photogenic , not anything else. Just search British / American media reports on Calcutta, to learn more.
