This version of the show is very old. It was done very well, but most directors today could not get away with such "color blind" casting.

Of course, in something like Hairspray, where the characters being black or white is VERY important to understanding the story, it's a whole other thing. But I believe Sandy Duncan was cast for the way she played Tiger Lilly, instead of her hair.
