Hi Vishal, He did not make any mistake but you have read in Ramcharit Manas that he want ted to get Moksh and he knew that nobody could kill him instead Ram so he kidnapped Sita intentionally so that he can get moksh with his family. Pls. read the Ravan-Shurpnakha samvad after nose cutting of Shurpnakha and khad-dushan vadh.
