He is exactly right. A true divine religion must be flexible to accommodate people in all times. Islam today is mainly a cultural system blindly followed from centuries.
Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.
This guy is a modernist......I can clearly see it.........he wants to reform Islam from within......these are the types of people who say homosexuality should be allowed, lesbianism, free-mixing, abolishing certain punisments.......he better be careful...I see him on the edge of apostasy.
You see him on the edge of apostasy? He wants to reform Islam? Before you make such accusations, I'll suggest you read his book, "Losing My Religion: A Call for Help". You will appreciate the robust explanation he gives to people who feel like the tittle of the book. You must also separate "reforming Muslims" from "reforming Islam". If he calls on Muslims to separate their culture-core from Islamic position so that Islam can be better understood, what's the problem with that?
@MrSHIZZLE4u Crazy statement to make akhi from just a 4 min clip. Please read his books. He doesn't want to reform Islam. He wants Muslims to reform themselves. There is a BIG BIG difference. Salaam alaikum and Ramadhan kareem.
i;m a new revert and i'm exactly in this state that he's talking about. I had the high spirituality before, but now, i feel like i lost it . sometimes i felling like going back to Christianity, a time when life was easier and my spirtuality about God (ALLAH) was very High. I need Help
@pqz91 salaam, alykum brother! i am a born muslim. i got this advice for you. brother you have got iman, this is good that you do acknoledege, that the level of you re iman has gone down, this happen with every muslim. but dont give up, try to attened the mosque regularly or lectuer's about hereafer, or try to read and recite the quran . that will helpe you to gain your spirtuality back inshalllah. and also aske Allah (SWT) to helpe you towards his worshipe. may ALLAH (swt) STRENGTH YOUR IMAN.
Sister, everyone's faith experience vicissitude depending on the state of mind. Most of the time, this is caused by the environment, sometimes, by life's challenges. Avoid cantankerous & argumentative Muslims. They appear to have knowledge & speak with Islamic authority, but they undermine our spiritual & connection to God. Seek the gathering of people who uplift your connection to God & engage in community building activities. Finally, tahajjud & Qur'an keep ur faith high.
Listen to Quran alot and get a translation of course , the prophet told us that Iman (faith) increases and decreases and Quran renews your faith . Also don't push your self hard to do alot of ta'a (nafila ) instead push your self not to make any sin and when you do , don't get depressed , just repent and ask for forgiveness and keep trying , you don't have to be perfect .Don't feel overwhelmed by the dos and don'ts . Take islam step by step like a baby learning to walk .
@r0rozx I'd like also to add the the prophet companions didn't become the best Muslims ever in few days or weeks , but they kept trying for years .Also make your self always connected to them , get a book about the prophet companions and read the prophet Sira .Few pages every day will make feel that you live among them . Also build your faith upon proofs and logic , islam is full of miracles in Quran and Sunnah .Search for these miracles and your faith will be solid whatever your mental state is

Dr. Jeffrey Land, you call yourself erudite, when in fact, you're disillusional.
You tell Muslims to be flexible, when they're intractable, no matter what you tell them. Give yourself a few years and you'll come to my way of thinking. You'll see how intellectually limited Muslims are, how stupid and paranoid they all are. Judging by your tone of voice, I know you are a syncophant, perhaps an overpaid one. Have the Saudis paid you too well? All your mortgages paid off? All expenses paid?
Hearing is one thing but providing proof is another. I have seen many of his lectures and read some of his material and the guy makes a lot of sense, using the Qur'an and Sunnah as evidence.
Plus, I had the opportunity of spending some time with him and he is a very humble person Mashallah. Let's support the brother for taking the time & effort of spreading the truth, shall we?
Glad to hear that you had the opportunity to meet this professor of maths& no doubt hes a good, Allah fearing Muslim-let no man judge other's intentions since only Allah swt knows those!
Granted what you say may be correct up to a certain extent, but does Islam need to be modernised?
Who has the capacity to "modernise" it?
What needs to be stripped away from the Deen of Islam, for it to become "Modern" & acceptable Religion to ppl?
How many of Allah's Commandments need to be relaxed?
I think you misunderstood what I said: what I meant to say was just becasue your friend said Dr. Lang said so doesn't make it true. Dr. Lang's got many lectures on YouTube and never did he say we should modernize Islam. He is merely telling Muslims not to make everything Haram when there is no strong evidence from the Qur'an or Sunnah because it is driving ppl away from the religion. The prophet himself was flexible, ex: when he sent Muadh ibn Jabal to Yemen he told him to be easy on ppl
If you get told something, an investigation should pursue to establish the validity of it, if it is to be believed, but it doesnt mean its a lie either!
At the advent Of Islam, did not the Quresh tribe bawled & screamed, falsely accusing Prophet Mohammad pbuh & Islam, for splitting their families, of teaching of one God, Allah swt?
They too, with their pagan ways, couldnt abide by Allah swts Rules & regulations & vehemently rebelled against them, but eventually learnt to understand the Rules, accept and benefited by them!
Nobody said your friend is a liar, he may have misunderstood Dr. Lang especially since he's got a lot of lectures on YouTube and nowhere does he ever suggest to "modernize" Islam. Your point about Quraysh is not valid since it's out of context: Quraysh were non-Muslims and denied the very essence of the Islamic creed. Dr. Lang is a Muslim and all he is saying is not to make things Haram without strong proof from the Qur'an and Sunnah. You cannot compare the 2.
He gave this lecture during the time when he was NOT with "khalifaclothing" BUT "MeccaCentric" (in error quoted another) & used to sell part of his lectures on the DVDs.
My prayer for him is this May Allah swt make him, & us strong in the Deen of Islam- like during the time of our Prophet Mohammad s.a.w.
What I hear form his talk is that he is warning people of going too extreme with rulings and neglecting their heart. I have fallen into this before and many other Muslims (revert and born).
A few points: Islam is an Intellectual Deen, not a spiritual invitation.
1) After this "spiritual conversion" the next requirement is salat which can b terms as "legalistic". Do we set salat aside until the convert is ready?
2) "Not trying to reform the world just community in America"... Islam is for the world. Hes too vague w/ sweeping allegations.
3) People often leave Islam due to misinformation not becuz of intellectual invitation to its belief & its requirements.
4) His misuse of Shaf3's experience when he acquired more knowledge & changed some of his previous opinions is twisted. He didnt change based on time & place.
5) Islam does not change based on the "culture" that existed prior to it. Islam eliminates what was not Islam before it & allows wat was from al-Madaniyyah (civilization) & not based on any jahiliyyah practice. For example henna...
6) KEEP IN MIND... His whole presentation collectively rings of a kamalist agenda.
Maybe his rulings did change according to the place he was in. Fiqh is adaptable. There are differences of opinion within fiqh and depending on the condition of the people the scholars will take different views. For example in Syria, most of the Sunnis are Hanafi's and so for tarawih they pray 20 rakat. But in some parts the scholars take the view of 8 rakat because in that area the eeman of the general population appears weak and they would not come to the masjid at all if tarawih was 20 rakat
As for your first point, I don't believe he is saying we do not follow Islamic rules altogether. Of course we learn salah but we don't hassle the convert with too many rules at the start. For example, pants above ankles, growing the beard, hijab, etc. If we hassle them about these things when they first accept Islam it might overload them.
Yes Islam is for the world but we should work on our local community the best we can.
I have seen a person recently who left Islam because of people telling them so many rules that they felt it was too much. But Alhamdulillah this person is slowly coming back to Islam from the spiritual side.
@dawahworks youre a pure example of an idiot. who gave you the right to call someone "a shaytan"? How is he ignorant? cuz he isnt using arabic words in his lecture? because he says God, instead of Allah(swt)? hes open minded , youre narrow minded.

Inna huwa minal 3ilmaniyyah... He is a clear secularist who seeks to separate ruhiyyah (spirituality) from as-siyasah (Islamic politics).
He advocates belief devoid of obedience.
