  • Master Musician , Innovator , creator , arranger , conductor , song writer ... this wasn't on the radio in Georgia , he HAD TO CREATE the FUNK and everybody else are just imitators . Sorry MJ , when you make a song bout a RAT , you're kicked out of the soul club .

  • The very DEFINITION of the word "funk", i don't give a hard fard WHAT Merriam Webster says!

  • We use to ROLLER ROCKER JAM HELLA DOWN skating to this. I did things I was afraid to do on skates while I was skating to this. I've got Parts 1,2,3,& 4 on two 45's and all 4 parts on a CD. Every time I hear this song I can't set still. When they take it to the bridge, it's so FUNKY it can't be topped or repeated. For that moment in time, James and the band grabbed the groove by the tail and snapped it like a whip.!!!!! ( This groove is so pure that this is Funk DNA )

  • Thanks Mr. Brown, I stayed in school like you told me....what an encouragement you were to many black children, especially the kids in Augusta who attended Jr High right down the street from your home, in a neighborhood we were told we would never live in......

you showed us all things are possible!!!!!!!

  • Loved the Godfather then and still love him now. To me he is the greatest of all time. He was definitely a major reason why I love music and dancing and playing the saxophone. You talk about dancing off make it funky when I was a teenager plus all his songs we would get down with RIP JB

  • @mrintimateluva wow i remember those days i was 16 years old when this song came out we use to form a soul trian line at the high school dances-the man is a legend-He is truly the Godfather of Soul

  • So funky, it hurts...gimme more!!

  • It's too funky in here! JB was a perfectionist, even though this may seem like a jam session. Check that bass line! Then Maceo comes in with his sax!

    And guess what.

I got ants in my pants!

    B¬)

Thanx for sharing Timmy. I only have part1 on my JB 50th anniversairy CD

  • @wordreet

That is NOT Maceo on the sax. That is St Clair Pinckney. Don't you hear James saying, "Come on Pink"?

  • @IkeDysonSOUL Plus Maceo's sax lines never reached that high, far as I know. Yeah he's clearly calling out "Pink".

  • @timmy841212

St Clair Pinckney died in 1999. He said in interviews that because Maceo was the most famous of James Brown's musicians, sometimes when he was playing on stage, people would call out, "Play it Maceo." He would shout back, "Thanks, bro, but I'm not Maceo..."

Besides Maceo Parker did not work for james Brown when this song was recorded (1971). Maceo left in 1970, and came back in 1973.

Sent you a vid with a St Clair Pinckney solo in da middle...

  • @IkeDysonSOUL Ah. No, I missed that. I know Maceo wasn't there all the time. And now that I've checked, which I should have done before, this was released in '71, Maceo's second year with Maceo and All The Kings Men!

  • Say what you will....but if it wasn't for the Godfather, half of these rappers from the '80s to today would not have careers!

  • @tljones9 No one will argue about that. I agree 110%.

  • @tljones9 No arguments here ! This is THE FUNKIEST !!!!!!

  • @tljones9

HALF od them? Get the fuck outta here!

Without James Brown there would BE no rap...

  • @IkeDysonSOUL LOL true.

  • @timmy841212 the best sequence of comments ive seen on a brown video!

  • @IkeDysonSOUL Word Up!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @IkeDysonSOUL emphasis on the BE

  • @IkeDysonSOUL uu i see a hater here...

  • @IkeDysonSOUL AMEN TO THAT!!!

  • @IkeDysonSOUL -Ain't that the TRUTH!!!

  • @IkeDysonSOUL without james brown no rap,no rock no modern music.....PERIOD..... and im white!!!!!!! lol

  • @tljones9 it is sad that these young rappers don't realize how famous James Brown was especially during the Civil Rights Movement he was no just a musician he was a black activist also-he spoke to his people through his music like the song "Say it Loud I am Balck and I am Proud"

  • @tljones9 All of them, my brother, all of them. Mr. Brown was the foundation.

  • @tljones9 I agree 110%

  • @tljones9 80's and early 90's but not todays rappers and producers

  • @kingod615 which of today's rappers & producers do you have in mind?

  • @wallofvideo on the producers side lex luger, justice leauge, cool and dre, toomp and rappers currencey, jeezy,j.cole its just a diffrent time alot of artist still sample but most of them want OG beats so they dont have to pay royaltys

  • @tljones9 deff menng hip hop originated as funk there wud be nuttin today ...juss these fags listenin to dubstep

  • whas-n-ever i play gots to be funky, somebody slap yo mamma cause she made it funky

  • This is not polyrythmic funky...

    This is just FUNK

  • The funkiest!

  • This music caused a disturbance in the space/time continuum. It made God dance. That had actually never happened to Him before. He listened to this over and over and kinda lost focus on stuff. Oh well.

  • that organ kills me

  • The bridge just drops you into a different zone..man he knew when to shut up!!!!

  • I knew EXACTLY what he was saying...you must be old school too! On yeah, you forgot the grita and gravy!

  • @gailousl Grits and gravy... Bobby was shouting "pass the peas" too lol

  • I knew EXACTLY what he was saying...you must be old school too!

  • james brown is and will remain a legend cause everytime he hit the studio he start getting hungry, and make other people hungry. he got food for the funk and the funk for the soul!!!!! R.I.P. JB

  • My second all time favorite James Brown song beside The Big Payback! Cause he is talking about food Smothered Steak, Cracklin Bread.Turnip Greens . Neck Bones. Candied Yams. Grits and Gravy. Buttermilk. Snap Peas, Moblie Gumbo, A Hunk of Corn Bread. Ya See I Speak Brown!!! I bet most of you didn't even know what he was saying!? MAKE IT FUNKY Beotch !!

  • @lmallen77 LOL! Oh I knew. ;) James ain't even that hard to understand once you start to listen to what he has to say. It makes sense he put all that food in there. The ingredients to make things funky hahaha

  • @lmallen77 there's some really goodtime fun but inteligent too comments for this tune pity all You Tube can't be as decent and well meaning

  • Neckbone !

  • Mr James Brown and George Clinton pioneered polyrhythmic funk !!!

  • @hapzap13 Exactly!

  • lol this mofo just named my all time food favorites

  • Try this: Just out of the blue, using the same intonation of Bobby Byrd in the opening of this record, ask, "What you gon' play now?" If the person you ask is not hip, you'll get some wacky response like, "Well, I was just thinking about my friends . . ." But if that person is indeed hip, the reply will be just like James Brown's: "Bobby, I don't know. But whasn'ever I play, it's got to be funky." And then you chime in with, "Yeah."

  • the godfather of soul himself baby :)

  • all i have 2 say is. that the name of the song speaks for it self and he was truly the hardest working man in show bizness and still is if you ask me R.I.P. JAMES BROWN

  • YES INDEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Everything you did JB was RAW PHUNK...thank you for blessing us with the PHUNK!

  • thurr will neva b anotha bandleader/MC like dis again.......incredible band.....and songz r all legendary.......THE G.O.A.T.

  • what about george clinton??!!

  • @123djblive George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, James Brown, and Sly Stone ALL epitomized music in the name of the Funk.

  • A song doesn't really get "funky" until people start clapping to it. Now, you're talking about some major league funk right there...

  • @arkansoul Shhhoooot I'm clapp'n right now!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Ha ha, Ha ha..

  • this is the jam , as a kid my dad took me to get my 1st album and he got me " james brown live at the apollo " , james died in 2006 , so did my dad , but my memory of both of them will never die , i know my dad is up there in the 1st row , jamming to james , r.i.p. dad and james " LONG LIVE THE FUNK "

  • @eddyb6666 you are a happy man, very happy, i think!

  • @eddyb6666 And Gerald Ford told James ...wait for me BRO!!!!

  • @kiddfunknyc that's really clever and funny.... lol.

  • @eddyb6666 I hope he is sitting next to my Grandmother. She took my sister and I to the Apollo whenever he was there back in the day, from the 60's into the early 70's. She died in 1979. Funk it up for me, granny!

  • JB and MJ are gone. Prince and Stevie are the two last greats still with us. God bless them ALL!!! thanks for posting! great quality!

  • @ltinsley2

I could not of said that better myself!

  • @SethChillis Thanks my friend!

  • @ltinsley2 My friend, what you state about JB and MJ is surely true and we are saddened by it. There are, however, many "greats" still with us: Gladys Knight, Sly Stone, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, K & The Gang -just to name a few. Yes, God bless them ALL!

  • @freddypknight Yes that's true. They and so many others are indeed considered greats. However, there are some in that upper tier of greats that transcend time. Some make their mark in the industry and enjoy a certain level of notoriety for a period of time, then it's those whose catalog runs for years (even after death) and attain universal acclaim beyond appealing to just certain age groups. A 10 yr old can tell you something about MJ and JB. This may not hold true in the case of the others
