Master Musician , Innovator , creator , arranger , conductor , song writer ... this wasn't on the radio in Georgia , he HAD TO CREATE the FUNK and everybody else are just imitators . Sorry MJ , when you make a song bout a RAT , you're kicked out of the soul club .
We use to ROLLER ROCKER JAM HELLA DOWN skating to this. I did things I was afraid to do on skates while I was skating to this. I've got Parts 1,2,3,& 4 on two 45's and all 4 parts on a CD. Every time I hear this song I can't set still. When they take it to the bridge, it's so FUNKY it can't be topped or repeated. For that moment in time, James and the band grabbed the groove by the tail and snapped it like a whip.!!!!! ( This groove is so pure that this is Funk DNA )
James music was so funky i just get goosebumps whenever i hear it,i think i'll go jump in the shower, afterwards get me some cornbread and buttermilk, nuff said.
When I order food at a restaurant and the waitress or waiter asks me how would I like my steak, I reply with a James Brown style cool expression relaxed on my face, I lean back casual and say "Make it funky" lol.
On Slum Villages track titled "I Don't Know", James Brown voice clips are sampled from this song in that one from SV. Dilla knew where the samples where at! Gotta make it funky. James Brownzilla and Dilla Zilla! along with Bootszilla lol.
Easily the best set of comments I've ever seen on a YouTube video - fun, humorous but also intelligent and in a good friendly spirit. Kind of fitting that they go with such a great tune.
This was my favorite James Brown song they were doing a dance back then called the "PENGUIN'-if you don't know what the penguin dance is -it is the dance that Jerome always does on the TV show Martin

@jackrebel601 I just so happned uploaded the full version of this a couple of weeks ago. I got all four parts together about 12-15 years ago on a james brown 2 disc compilation. I', not sure if it's still in print or not, but I got it from one of the record clubsBMG, or Columbia House.

@ Eddyb6666; That's a stone cold trip u mentioned that but 1st my condolences to you father. 2ndly, I can very much relate somewhat to your comment.. My father took me to my very 1st concert which was J.B. & ironically he took me to what was James' last concert in L..A. How coincidental how our father's were involved in our music!!
Thanks Mr. Brown, I stayed in school like you told me....what an encouragement you were to many black children, especially the kids in Augusta who attended Jr High right down the street from your home, in a neighborhood we were told we would never live in......
Loved the Godfather then and still love him now. To me he is the greatest of all time. He was definitely a major reason why I love music and dancing and playing the saxophone. You talk about dancing off make it funky when I was a teenager plus all his songs we would get down with RIP JB
@mrintimateluva wow i remember those days i was 16 years old when this song came out we use to form a soul trian line at the high school dances-the man is a legend-He is truly the Godfather of Soul
St Clair Pinckney died in 1999. He said in interviews that because Maceo was the most famous of James Brown's musicians, sometimes when he was playing on stage, people would call out, "Play it Maceo." He would shout back, "Thanks, bro, but I'm not Maceo..."
Besides Maceo Parker did not work for james Brown when this song was recorded (1971). Maceo left in 1970, and came back in 1973.
Sent you a vid with a St Clair Pinckney solo in da middle...
@IkeDysonSOUL Ah. No, I missed that. I know Maceo wasn't there all the time. And now that I've checked, which I should have done before, this was released in '71, Maceo's second year with Maceo and All The Kings Men!
@tljones9 it is sad that these young rappers don't realize how famous James Brown was especially during the Civil Rights Movement he was no just a musician he was a black activist also-he spoke to his people through his music like the song "Say it Loud I am Balck and I am Proud"
@wallofvideo on the producers side lex luger, justice leauge, cool and dre, toomp and rappers currencey, jeezy,j.cole its just a diffrent time alot of artist still sample but most of them want OG beats so they dont have to pay royaltys
This music caused a disturbance in the space/time continuum. It made God dance. That had actually never happened to Him before. He listened to this over and over and kinda lost focus on stuff. Oh well.
james brown is and will remain a legend cause everytime he hit the studio he start getting hungry, and make other people hungry. he got food for the funk and the funk for the soul!!!!! R.I.P. JB
My second all time favorite James Brown song beside The Big Payback! Cause he is talking about food Smothered Steak, Cracklin Bread.Turnip Greens . Neck Bones. Candied Yams. Grits and Gravy. Buttermilk. Snap Peas, Moblie Gumbo, A Hunk of Corn Bread. Ya See I Speak Brown!!! I bet most of you didn't even know what he was saying!? MAKE IT FUNKY Beotch !!
@lmallen77 LOL! Oh I knew. ;) James ain't even that hard to understand once you start to listen to what he has to say. It makes sense he put all that food in there. The ingredients to make things funky hahaha
Try this: Just out of the blue, using the same intonation of Bobby Byrd in the opening of this record, ask, "What you gon' play now?" If the person you ask is not hip, you'll get some wacky response like, "Well, I was just thinking about my friends . . ." But if that person is indeed hip, the reply will be just like James Brown's: "Bobby, I don't know. But whasn'ever I play, it's got to be funky." And then you chime in with, "Yeah."
all i have 2 say is. that the name of the song speaks for it self and he was truly the hardest working man in show bizness and still is if you ask me R.I.P. JAMES BROWN
this is the jam , as a kid my dad took me to get my 1st album and he got me " james brown live at the apollo " , james died in 2006 , so did my dad , but my memory of both of them will never die , i know my dad is up there in the 1st row , jamming to james , r.i.p. dad and james " LONG LIVE THE FUNK "
@eddyb6666 I hope he is sitting next to my Grandmother. She took my sister and I to the Apollo whenever he was there back in the day, from the 60's into the early 70's. She died in 1979. Funk it up for me, granny!
@ltinsley2 My friend, what you state about JB and MJ is surely true and we are saddened by it. There are, however, many "greats" still with us: Gladys Knight, Sly Stone, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, K & The Gang -just to name a few. Yes, God bless them ALL!
@freddypknight Yes that's true. They and so many others are indeed considered greats. However, there are some in that upper tier of greats that transcend time. Some make their mark in the industry and enjoy a certain level of notoriety for a period of time, then it's those whose catalog runs for years (even after death) and attain universal acclaim beyond appealing to just certain age groups. A 10 yr old can tell you something about MJ and JB. This may not hold true in the case of the others

If the person you ask is not hip, you'll get some wacky response like, "Well, I was just thinking about my friends . . ." @eddyb6666 I hope he is sitting next to my Grandmother.
