  • God knows how brilliant From A Basement would've been if he'd completed it.

  • I love Elliott Smith as much as the next fanatic that listens to all of his songs on constant loop (besides talking to Mary) but this song is terrible in comparison (even not comparing) to his other songs. This is just...bad. Sorry to say, since I love the guy so much.

  • @TheClique86 I really did. Go search for Basement Unsupressed on sweetaddy. I am Stickman. But whatever doesnt really matter. I just find it interesting and awesome how Elliott's music, even the rarest of the rare has spread like wildfire across the internet.

  • Just occurred to me that if this is a song about him pining for someone who's now with someone else other than him, some of the lyrics might be from his point of view, and some might be from the girl's '. It could be read as, "You hung your head like a sign that said, 'Do not disturb, don't try being part of my life - isn't gonna get you anywhere. Go by. Just between us.' " That would align with the, "Like nothing happened at all, don't come by, don't hang around, and don't call." Sad if true.

  • Kinda drunk, relistening to this stuff on here because I got a new computer since I uploaded all these, saddened that he was recording old songs during this time, very In Utero Cobainish and the tale tell signs of writers block and drug abuse

  • elliott and cobain, my two favourite singer/songwriters ever and human beings.

  • @TheClique86 Not really - he was actually given a disc of older stuff from a fan that wasn't on albums, causing him to rediscover some of those older songs and revisit some others that no one had heard before.

Regardless, "Mr.Goodmorning" is pure Basement-era, not an older song.

  • Hate to keep commenting all the time, but I don't have this song so I come here to listen to it lol.

Just wanted to say I really wish this had been on Basement. Maybe right before a distorted reality.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! The only thing that I like better in the live versions is the pretty intro/outro he did. Otherwise though, this version is definitely superior.

  • Holy shit! You just made me soooo happy! For the past year or more..however long it was uploaded to YouTube I've been listening to the live version of this song. Never heard the studio version. <3 THANK YOU

  • no problem, I think this is heads over tails better than the live versions floating around

  • @TheClique86 - I agree. The lyrics are much more refined.

  • I can't stop listening to this song today for some reason.

  • probally because its so good

  • Indeed it is.

  • "I'll be kicking your memory's ass like a shot glass." Awesome lyric. I really wish we could have seen where he was going to go with this whole semi-psychedelic, fuzzy sound he seems to have been playing around with. It was almost like really fuzzy, grinding, Beatles-esque music. It's there a lot on Basement and a lot in outtakes and unreleased stuff from that period. I think he was really trying to do something different from what he had done up to that point.

  • that line is so cheesy

  • Freaking brilliant song. One of his best.

  • God! He sings. Thank you. First Suicide Machine, now Mr. Good Morning. What a day! Thank you. The only thing missing is See You in Heaven, but I've heard he never recorded any vocals. But we have Suicide Machine and Mr. Good Morning. That's enough for years!

  • I'm pretty confident See You in Heaven is part of the noise tracks he talked about, no vocals on any of them
