I have heard that it is because of the way that some of the guns are set inside of the ports on the wings. However, I have heard that this is a disputable explanation, so not sure if this is irrefutable.
@hawker800FO It is not the supercharger that makes the wining sound. It is air travelling over the gun ports and high speed. It is an effect that does not happen on Mustangs that no longer have gun ports; but happens on Mustangs that do still have gun ports.
Looking forward to seeing these fellas at Flying Legends this year. BTW, what causes the distinctive whistling noise when a P-51 comes out of a loop?
