  • I feel saddened that lack of a Laugh track was enough to make the "loyal" fans of Red Dwarf turn on BTE....

  • im turning this idea into a university project. its interesting how a laughter track, sound effects and music can totally change the feel and audience reaction. personally i enjoyed back to earth as it was but i can see what people mean when they say it felt empty. i guess thats what being on the red dwarf would be like...empty. but its nice to have the prominent feel of a comedy

  • Brilliant work.. just didn't feel right without it!

  • Wow, it actually makes it! Turns it from a drama piece back into a sitcom but both work equally well, in my opinion.

  • SO MUCH BETTER! I really wish they had it originally.

  • Bring back the laugh track for the next series!

  • Thanks mate! You're right! I did laugh more watching this than the bunch of bullcrap on DVD that they released! You da man Cat!

  • Brilliant! This makes a HUGE difference to the feel. The Jokes were always there but Red Dwarf is a sitcom, not a movie or a drama and is written like a sitcom with crude humour and cheesy but fantastic dialogue. I sometimes think Doug Naylor is trying to raise RD above it's natural station and trying to make it something bigger than it needs to be.

All seasons have their merits but 3-6 were the definitive ones. Stick with that formula Doug, or get Rob back.

  • I'm amazed at how well it works with the laugh track. Just didn't feel like Red Dwarf without it.

  • it so needs this, i actually looked up free crowd laugh sounds and was playing them as I was watching it. I know its sad, but I loved red dwarf and I just cant watch back to earth without a laugh track! The silence is so akward and weird! WHAT WERE THE THIKING? Ill bet they thought it would be "Too 90's" or "too american sitcom" to use a lugh track these days..

  • do the whole show

  • does anyone know if they are going to edit the Back to Earth DVD with the laughter added? That would make it feel more like Red Dwarf. I really would buy it without a second thought if they did, just doesn't feel right without the laughter....

  • Someone posted earlier that adding a laughter track to all three episodes wouldn't work because of no pauses by the actors. The way I see it is it's ruined without it anyway so how could it do any harm. The writing for these specials was the poorest ever for red dwarf imo. Making it feel even less like red dwarf didn't make any sense.

  • Much MUCH better!

    Thanks.

  • the laugh track was missed. I didn't think I would like it but uh it wouldn't have ruined it.

  • I'll probably get flammed for this, but it's a shame that doug can't take scripts made up by fans and see what he likes about them if he wanted to use it, i made a 2 min clip up (own material ) and a lot of people thought it was funny, i made it up in hour, i tried to use it for red dwarf competition but it was too long, i tried to use that to be original but did without oxygen instead.

My clip with my scripts up on my channel, but it sounded a lot better in the script.

  • Please please please do the whole back to earth!! Sorry Doug Naylor and Channel Dave but it needs to be done. Stop glossing up and ruining a quality show. Bring back the cheesy laughter IT MAKES THE SHOW WHAT IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN!! Fab!

  • great work man

without the laugh track this mini series just didnt feel like the show iv known and loved for years

it almost seemed like there was an audience who didnt find it funny just because im so used to them being there and it makes it seem kinda sad

  • So much better! I actually laughed this time.

  • Sooo much better now :)

  • Thats more like it!

  • Oh, much better! :)

  • It actually didn't bother me too much that there wasn't a laugh track... but I do like this -- it does feel more like normal Red Dwarf :)

  • It felt weird watching Back to Earth, with the lack of a Laugh Track. Makes one wonder why they chose to do it that way.

    Thanks mate.

  • I guess it's because there were so many new effects. The audience wouldn't have been able to see half of them because they were edited, like most movies these days.

-It's not canned laughter or whatever you want to call it! It's an audience!

  • @TillieMoon - It was actually because the plot would get leaked on the internet straight away. A lot of the older episodes were filmed with the audience not being able to see a lot of the stuff.

  • Some scenes (like these) are MUCH better with laugh track, because it feels just like the original series. However, the Back To Earth trilogy was written/filmed/edited like, and basically is, a movie, it has a whole different look and feel, so overall a laugh track wouldn't have fitted really. Imagine a laugh track over the bus scene for instance. Wouldn't work...

  • well laughing on the bus scene would feel innappropriate but during the parts that have the same kind of jokes as the show it feels empty and cold because ya know theres usually a laugh there

  • Great stuff, but it's not the same when you know it's not the real audience...

  • You've perfected it! This is much better.

  • I just watched this scene without the laugh track, and the whole time I was putting laughs in my head. I paused, hopped on the computer and typed in Red Dwarf Back To Earth laugh track. Now this is Red Dwarf. Smiles all around, while without laugh track, I just watched the scene straight faced. That laugh track in Red Dwarf might as well be another character.

  • NOW it feels like RD

  • Wow...this really does help a lot.

  • yep.... definately fixes it, NOW it feels like dwarf.

  • thats really gd, well done :)

  • yeah it works with the laugh track....thats the only thing i reckon back 2 earth was missing.

  • i heard they didn't have a studio audience because they couldn't afford it...

  • YES! Now thats what I'm talking about! If they bring Red Dwarf back, they have to bring back the Laugh!

  • yeah that's good i like that! heh :)

it felt weird without the laugh track!

  • i didn't notice the lack of a laugh track until someone commented on it. I thought it didn't matter because I was still laughing out loud...

But then I found this and it really does feel like coming home! it was a great way to end it.

  • laugh track makes dwarf its not just a sci-fi its a science fiction comedy, with out the track its really kinda dull and just not dwarf

  • It really needed this.

  • that's wierd!. I just came out of a vid and stopped it where he threw the tomato in the air. Come to this and it carries on perfectly!

  • That is because you are in an alternate Universe. You simple experienced a time bubble from this reality caused when space time is warped to such an extent that a bubble of space time is squeezed out and rises through the multiverse.

No doubt this warping of space time in this Universe was a result of the last Red Dwarf show which twisted so many minds the Omniconscious that structures our reality bowed before snapping back resulting in the warping which caused the bubble.

  • yeah, so much better with the laugh track, classic dwarf now!

  • Spot on!!! exactly what the show lacked... everyone knows it, i'm just so surprised they thought it would work without it. Nice one for doing this, its made it Dwarf again :)

  • yeah it does need the laughter track, it wasn't the same without - it was just wrong

  • oh my god that was so much more funny!

i barely laughed at the part where they go into the shop in the actual episode, but this i was laughing out loud!

  • It does make it more dwarf like. Nice one

  • there are at least two fan edits of "Back to Earth," one of which has a laugh track - and these can be found as torrent files. try google.

  • whilst i dont think the laughin track makes it seem funnier. it just gives this show the right atmosphere as with the rest of the series. def think it would be better with the track restored for the specials

  • Why do you need the laugh? You don't know when to laugh or what? I really don't mind that there isn't the laugh in the new episodes.

  • SO MUCH BETTER. I want to watch a SITCOM not Doug Naylor's desperate attempt at a comedy drama or a movie. This actually feels like RD!!! Thanks for this.

  • I completely agree.

  • alot BETTER

  • is anyone prepared to upload all 3 episodes on youtube with added laughter?

  • PLEASE FOR GOD SAKES SOMEONE DO IT!

  • ill do it, but where can i download the 3 episodes and a laugh track?

  • you'll be able to find the episodes around somewhere. Probably as a torrent. and as for a laugh track, slice it from old episode audio

  • yeah i got three torrents for each episode, now how do i get them to be videos?

i'm using sony vegas pro 8 if that means anything

  • well you need to download the videos using the torrent. Get a torrent downloading programme and use that to convert them

  • For some reason this seems better but its the same :S

  • a million smegging times better, should of been filmed like this!

  • I agree. I think it's better with the laugh track ON. Maybe they'll offer it as an option on the DVD.

  • This is better, it now seems more like the older ones.

  • Totally kills it in my opinion. The dramatic sense of it is lost. It's clearly not just any other episode - so why pretend it is? I thought this episode was perfect. It was all I wanted it to be and more. The place it was coming from was exactly where it was at. I love it.

  • Agree. Much better without.

  • This is miles greater. Surprised it makes such a difference XD

  • Thanks for doing this. I thought straight away that the main problem with the BTE episodes was the lack of laughter (on-screen - not just cos of some lame jokes!!!). This makes it much funnier. Hopefully the makers will realise and offer a laugh track on or off option on the DVD release.

    Cheers

  • Very well done. Stick one on the news!

  • this is how it should have been. im just hoping they add it to the DVD.

  • This is really great. I personally think that the episodes were pretty good, and this laughter track would have made them even better.

  • I think they could have done what they did with series 7. filmed it and then shown it to an audience. The laughter does create a better atmosphere. That said it still works very well without one.

  • It's way better with laugh track thats wat i missed most in the new red dwarf

  • yea works better...do all back to earth with laugh and post it

  • The most worrying part is how much of the first clip you used doesn't need any laugh track added. Too much of it is not exposition, funny or serious. Just flabby build up to a joke.

I have to say, it works better with the laugh track. I wonder what the old RD that had a laugh track would be like without one. May not have been anywhere near as popular.

  • Nice, not sure now if i prefer with laughter or not.. But youve done it well so should help me decide :)

  • It really is weird how much better it makes those scenes. I'm disgusted at myself that I'd be so easliy won over by a bit of trickery like that. I normally hate canned laughter but that really does work! Although on the original series it was genuine audience reaction I suppose so not so bad. But it does make a point, its so much more like proper Dwarf than without it. Very strange, but well done for such a clear demonstration!

  • I myself would be against an actual canned laugh track being used on new Dwarf, but an actual recorded laugh track like they used in Series 7 i think would work. Though like i've said to other people, I did think that the lack of laugh track worked, i'm not OVERLY bothered about new shows having one, but i know people who saw this show as a sitcom and a sitcom alone really expect one. So maybe this is the best of both worlds.

  • I think the problem is though that adding one now wouldn't work with all the scenes. In the live recorded series the actors would have been able to ride the laughs and leave a bit of space when there was some audience reaction. Doing it afterwards can tend to drown out some of the dialogue. I know they recorded the audience reaction to series 7 but I don't think that worked as well. But maybe it would be something of an improvement on what we have now.

  • Yeah agree adding one in these specials would actually be a mistake. In future if they were to record a laugh track they'd have to do what they did in Series 7 and actually get the actors to leave a gap inbetween lines to allow for laughs. Was weird watching the Series 7 episodes on the DVD without laugh track because there's sudden silence in a lot of the shots, obviously where laughs were going to be.

  • Haven't got the DVDs of that series (not one of my faves). So you can switch the laugher track off as an option then?

  • some episodes have an extended version with extra content which has no laugh track

  • some episodes have an extended version with extra content which has no laugh track

  • Comment removed

  • Works far better with it.

  • I think it works with or without the laughter track. Nice video.

  • Yeh I think it's better with it

  • Sounds weird knowing that is has been added later. Maybe they should record 'actual' laughing when played to an audience, and have that as a separate soundtrack on the DVD! I certainly find it funnier with the laughter, but episode 3 was pretty emotional without it i found!

  • matturbanowski - have to agree, episode 3 actually was quite emotional! Think they did a very good job with that one.

  • It does work a lot better with a laughter track, It felt quite empty without them.

Also it's a great que to remind me when to laugh at some of the jokes in the new episodes.

  • this laugh track goes back to the earlie dwarfs where its blended and dosnt dominate every single cue line,,this is very nicely edited :) was spot on for me doesnt make it more or less funnier but make it less isolated ,but in reality it would have been edited with over powering laughs on ques that your only suppose to snigger at and things that arnt funny else it would discriminate against people with a diffrent humor so this wouldnt be legal heh

  • Your just wrong. It needs it, 8 seasons with just set the standard for the show.

  • I prefer it without it, and personaly this editing of it is rubbish the laughs arnt the type of response those jokes would have got!

  • wannabeactor21 - Oh please, it was done the day after the series was aired, what do you expect? Absolute perfection?! It was just a little experiment to see whether it was better with the laughter track, and I think it is. And maybe you don't have the best sense of humour, 'cos I laughed where there was laughter!

  • What are you on about i dont have the best sense of humour? I never said it wasnt funny! I just think some the jokes would have gottern a bigger reaction, like the sneeze bit, thats was a chuckle when that could have been a Kryten bonking Lister-esk reaction! It works better with it in this modern time people dont want to be told when to laugh! And it makes a better performance form the guys!

  • I think you've single handedly proved that Red Dwarf is funnier with a laughtrack, as much as I am usually against laugh tracks, this really works. However, I believe the plot of BTE when in 'our reality' there shouldn't be any canned laughter, just for plot sake. In the furniture store was hilarious because of the surrealism, the canned laughter should of continued if any when they returned back to reality.

Good job! Lets hope Doug Naylor views this clip.

  • Am I the only one that realises the reason they left out the laugh track was to see how a potential future film would fare?

That's why they omitted the laughs, the trouble here is that the jokes aren't funny enough. Not the omission of a laughter track.

Listen to what you people are saying! The addition of a laugh track helps the show becuase the jokes weren't funny enough in the first place? Surely that's the opposite of what we want!?

  • In conclusion, the dubbing of laughter means the experiment for the fans has failed. They should have improved the script, or added some laughs to cover it's shortcomings.

I vote the former, not the latter!

  • The performances were more sublte because of the lack of an audience and the jokes were more subtle too. They weren't less funny, jusyt funny in a different way.

In my opinion (and thats what it is), some of the jokes over the 3 eps were as good as any from te preceding 8 series. Infact I can think of at least 2 from each.

  • So, we agree. I never said the jokes weren't AS funny as the series. But for a film they HAVE to be laugh-out-loud funny to work. That's why no film ever has a laugh track - it'd be ridiculous!

Why do you think they suddenly removed it? It's to see how it would pass in a cinema.

Sadly, they failed to step up the script accordingly - if anything it was below parr. You said it yourself - "more subtle" - well, that was the problem.

And, 2 jokes from each episode - that confirms it - poor script.

  • That actually wasn't the reason for no laugh track... it was purely budget and time. Robert Llewellyn has confirmed that the presence of a live audience would have added numerous difficulties to the schedule (such as everyone having to rehearse together - camera crew etc - so that they can get it filmed as quickly as possible) and would have required extra members of staff to be employed. So that was the reason there was no audience.

  • At the same time, Doug Naylor has said he wanted it to appear more "filmic", and indeed it was. I'm sure the audio suite could have added a laughter track in very little time if that was what they wanted. Even I could do it in half a day on my PC! It wouldn't have to be a live audience. They even added incidental music which would take longer. Besides, what about the previous series,Craig and Bob said they filmed green screen back then, and presumably they dubbed it on top back then no problem.

  • Yeah, but they had a live audience to view the pre-recorded material. And in Series 7 they had a live audience to view the episodes. They didn't want to do that this time so the plot wouldn't get out (since it would take a few days to clear up the recorded laughter that covers up feed lines etc).

They've never used canned laughter before. Infact, Robert has seen this vid and said it would be an outrage if they used canned laughter.

  • Nice

  • wow that's more like red dwarf!

Oh and that girl in the shop is friggin cute!

  • Thanks dude!! Wow, sure does make a difference.

  • That feels more like Red Dwarf there. Good job maybe they should include a canned laugh track in the DVD release.
