  • That's why swimming is just the greatest sport in the world!!! You can just eat whatever and how much you want!! And unlike in basketball you won't be a cripple at 35 but can go on swimming till you die. (by drowning)

  • In excersise an average sedentary person begins to burn Fatty-acids after a 2 hour mild walk ( 1st burning off the protiens within the first 10 minutes then carbs up until the two hours). An athletes body like phelps has a physiological advantage where there body is able to store those carbs and begin to burn the lipids sooner.

  • @818562 You DO NOT start off burning protein you start off burning ATP followed by Carbohydrates then Fat, Finally when that is depleted you start burning Protein for energy.

  • @818562 The body does NOT burn PROTEIN first, it is the VERY LAST thing the body will use as fuel, this process is called Catabolism and produces toxins that can lead to blood poisoning in extreme cases.

  • Actually it is because Phelps eats 12,000 calories of food a day when training for Olympic competition. It make time him only 30 minutes to power down 4,000 calories in one setting, but he'll burn it all off in 2 hours or less swimming laps in the pool.

  • hey napischu he practices for 8 hours a day and eats 12,000 calories a day. plus thats not even the stuff he eats. there wa no grits or pasta on that table. he has 1 pound of protein enriched pasta for lunch and more at dinner. he also has like three or four energy drinks for carbs and calorie. i didnt believe the energy drink thing at first but he ralyy does

    If he eats 10.000 and burns 5.000 he'd end up fat really fast.

    And the other 5.000 calories are most likely not covered by his basal metabolic rate (The amount of calories you need to maintain your vital organs etc).

    He eats often which increases his metabolism, he practices alot, Swims for 2-3 hours without rest at a very high intensity level (Over 10 on a metabolic equivalent scale)

    He's most likely burning more than 5.000 a day.

    His metabolism is probably really high to start with + his physical condition + the amount of training.

    If an ordinary man ate that much and swam 5 hours a day he'd still end up fat. Fit, but still fat xD
