  • I am 37 and have been listening to Luke and Ronnie since I was a child. Loved them then, and appreciate them now. God is having a blast with these two up there.

  • Easy on the age brackets ! I am near to 75 and love the traditional music of Many countries. They are all gone now may they rest in peace.

  • @xgi36 Yes, may they rest in peace. 75 thats fantastic, I am 42 & i love traditional music too... Cheers.!!!!!

  • @xgi36 ha my dad was 90 last week if you listen to the lyrics 'stripped to the skin with the darkie finn on the isle of grain,he actually worked with him in 39 for mcalpine and around the whole of england, tough times indeed

  • @afertyus1000 To my dying day I will hear my father singing this song. I think it's probably the official anthem for that mark of man.

  • @drbobbeattie

So true my friend, i sang this song as a young man in construction in the early 70's..still can just manage to recall the words today!

  • same here, I'm 22 and I think this stuff is awesome

Thank you for uploading this Kelly :)

What a voice!! If Luke Kelly was sitting a music test he wud get a A++++++++++ :)

Brilliant :) xxxx Love ye Luke xxx

  • I'm sure it's been said before, but I'll say it again, thank you so much kellyoneill, everytime I'm pissed and at a loose end and wnating music (which is pretty often) I just look you up and click and click and everytime's a winner. And shame on anyone who argues in the comments thingy just for the record.

  • This is the first version I heard of this song and still my favorite. I love the version in which Ronnie Drew sings, but the lyrics and verses slightly differ from Luke Kelly's here. To me, the lyrics as done by Luke Kelly seems to make more sense. But to each "a dheis Dé go raibh a anam"; I've heard this song literally a hundred times and never tired of it. Ireland and Scotland have my favorite folk music by far, and I love the Gaelic languages too.

  • @birthofeternity every days a school day

  • Thank you very much fir keeping his music alive! Is there a chance I can get a collection of Luke's music also?

  • jesus i can't listen to this without tearing up and i don't know why. Its like i feel a bond with these men doing something i never experienced but i know had i been born in the 20's, the 30's, the 40's, or before that or after that i would have been likely in England doing labour. The way he sings it like you can see them clear as day. "shoulders cut to bits and seared"

appreciating and remembering the contrubition that the poeple from this island made so i could lead a better life.

  • would love to get a copy of this.

    Many thanks.

  • This is all i remember of the late 70's early 80's, the Dubliners, the mud, the blood and the beer. Moving from 1 prefab to another, an yuk, sharing 1 bed 3 guys doing shifts.

  • Thanks, Ronnie was great but not a Luke

  • Wonderful comment on the gritty and dangerous lives of exploited workers. True today in USA with greedy coal mining companies placing production above worker safety! Luke is such a genuine and powerful voice that it sounds like these men have one of their own to tell their story. Great song and moving performance!!

  • what was luke like as a banjo player, does anyone know?

  • Didn't know of Luke Kelly until recently - what a treat I've been missing! Wonderful!

    MapujaB

  • LUKE KELLY NIGHT VIISITING SONG

  • love it xxx sittin up on your own remminiscen notin like it xxx

  • Great version!!!!

  • would ya look at the head on yourman

  • Has anyone noticed the resemblance of

Luke to Richard Boone, Ronnie Drew's

favourite actor?. Luke once told me he was inspired by Billie Holiday. Her real name was Eleonora Fagan................... TUMBLEWEED

  • HAHA I always forget that luke had such hair so whenever I see this picture the first thing I think of is Luke wearing one of those great big Russian hats :)

  • This Guy has one of the most recognised voices from the Green Isle along with a few other legends

  • It's a great debate as to the greatest Irish singer ever, in my opinion No one ever sang a ballad with such passion and feeling as Luke Kelly, and with Paddy Reilly I rate them the very best ever, the irish ballad had alomst died out before the Clancy's and then the Dubluners saved them. I now do my oen bit performing them around the clubs, life's a craic

  • Sung from the heart. God bless.

  • all these songs remind me of bein in d oul lads car wen i was only a gosson, gud times, great music!!

  • The greatest folk singer ever - bar none.

  • Love this song where can I buy it? Luke has to be the best singer ever..

  • Cheers Paddy, thanks for the nice comment my friend...

Luke Kelly is still bringing people together as only he can.

    God Bless You Luke...

  • If you have doub'ts in life you could do worse than to listen to a couple of songs from Luke's wonderful repretoire of songs.

The man is a Genius, easily the greatest male vocalist Ireland has ever produced, you can't help but to be emotional when you hear this amazing voice, words can't describe it...

    His Legacy Will Live Forever...

  • Oh mother dear, I'm over here, And I'm never going back.

What keeps me here is the rake of beer,The women and the 'craic'

The 'craic' was good in Cricklewood and they wouldn't leave the Crown,

There were bottles flying and Biddies crying, sure Paddy's come to town.

  • This is a brillant song. And stuman06 is right.

  • Seo díobh a chairde, maith sibh. Coinnigh leis an nGaeilge. Ní bhfuair an Sasanach réidh leí, agus ní bhfaigh na West Brits sa Dáil inniu.

  • I love his voice !

  • My god he did a beautiful job on this song... as he did with every song. So hard to pick a favourite between Ronnie and Luke. Both so different and excellent.

  • ah but sir, you shouldn't have to pick a fav cause they where 2 different men with 2 different style's, and they both brought with them their own uniqueness. It was never about who was better it was always about just good music, lets just say they where 2 great performers and wonderfull people

  • you cant pick between Ronnie And luke Its impossible

    they've both got great voices

may the lord have mercy on your soul may you rest in peace mo chara

  • doesn't Luke bring this song to life?

  • and many the gangers fist across me ear.....

  • BRAVADO!!!!!!

  • Nobody sings them like Luke Kelly did. He was in a league of his own. May God be good to him.

  • The definitive London Irish song working man's song. I had no idea that Luke had recorded this, I'd only heard Ronnie's version. 'If you pride your life, don't join, by Christ.'

  • when you see the navvy work just thank god you weren't one.

  • hahah I love the song. And the verse

"I worked... with Russian, Czech and Pole" is on the time again, as lots of Poles work in Ireland, many of them in the construction industry:)) Greetings from Poland!!

  • Good lord I would give anything for your Luke Kelly/Dubliners library, haha

  • wow, definitly cant compare Luke with Ronnie, same song but 2 different "styles", donno, theyre different but both absolutly excellent!
