A lot of information I've gathered over a few years leads me to believe that this was the VERY 1st recording of Luke Kelly to go to air on Radio Eireinn.
Can i just say to the man that put these songs up mhaith hu mo chara...this is a great thing that you have done and a sincere thank u for keepin luke and the boys going
I am 37 and have been listening to Luke and Ronnie since I was a child. Loved them then, and appreciate them now. God is having a blast with these two up there.
@xgi36 ha my dad was 90 last week if you listen to the lyrics 'stripped to the skin with the darkie finn on the isle of grain,he actually worked with him in 39 for mcalpine and around the whole of england, tough times indeed
@NorStarReviews 16 and loving it! been into luke and evrything folk and irish since the tender age of 13...and to those who say why do i listen to 'that' music i say fuck off and listen to something proper. this music has history and soul!
I'm sure it's been said before, but I'll say it again, thank you so much kellyoneill, everytime I'm pissed and at a loose end and wnating music (which is pretty often) I just look you up and click and click and everytime's a winner. And shame on anyone who argues in the comments thingy just for the record.
This is the first version I heard of this song and still my favorite. I love the version in which Ronnie Drew sings, but the lyrics and verses slightly differ from Luke Kelly's here. To me, the lyrics as done by Luke Kelly seems to make more sense. But to each "a dheis Dé go raibh a anam"; I've heard this song literally a hundred times and never tired of it. Ireland and Scotland have my favorite folk music by far, and I love the Gaelic languages too.
jesus i can't listen to this without tearing up and i don't know why. Its like i feel a bond with these men doing something i never experienced but i know had i been born in the 20's, the 30's, the 40's, or before that or after that i would have been likely in England doing labour. The way he sings it like you can see them clear as day. "shoulders cut to bits and seared"
appreciating and remembering the contrubition that the poeple from this island made so i could lead a better life.
This is all i remember of the late 70's early 80's, the Dubliners, the mud, the blood and the beer. Moving from 1 prefab to another, an yuk, sharing 1 bed 3 guys doing shifts.
Wonderful comment on the gritty and dangerous lives of exploited workers. True today in USA with greedy coal mining companies placing production above worker safety! Luke is such a genuine and powerful voice that it sounds like these men have one of their own to tell their story. Great song and moving performance!!
HAHA I always forget that luke had such hair so whenever I see this picture the first thing I think of is Luke wearing one of those great big Russian hats :)
It's a great debate as to the greatest Irish singer ever, in my opinion No one ever sang a ballad with such passion and feeling as Luke Kelly, and with Paddy Reilly I rate them the very best ever, the irish ballad had alomst died out before the Clancy's and then the Dubluners saved them. I now do my oen bit performing them around the clubs, life's a craic
