This is the first version I heard of this song and still my favorite. I love the version in which Ronnie Drew sings, but the lyrics and verses slightly differ from Luke Kelly's here. To me, the lyrics as done by Luke Kelly seems to make more sense. But to each "a dheis Dé go raibh a anam"; I've heard this song literally a hundred times and never tired of it. Ireland and Scotland have my favorite folk music by far, and I love the Gaelic languages too.

jesus i can't listen to this without tearing up and i don't know why. Its like i feel a bond with these men doing something i never experienced but i know had i been born in the 20's, the 30's, the 40's, or before that or after that i would have been likely in England doing labour.
