@frgtrnr10 Ive had the opportunity to fly in a skyraider four times at the museum i volunteer at its a ride of a life time thank your for your service to this nation our plane is a AD-5W you can see where it had the radar dome underneath the aircraft, anyways thanks for the information and god bless
@frgtrnr10 I flew back seat ( radar ) as well as front seat ( sonar )in the late 50s. I started flying at the Naval air station in Atlantic City then went on the USS Essax CVA 9. We gave coverage to the marines landing in Lebanon in 58
@viper8red From w w w.aero-web.org..."It's mission was mainly radar support in ASW (Antisubmarine Warfare) in concert with the antisubmarine aircraft carrier HUK (Hunter/Killer) Group consisting of S-2's, helo's, etc. It carried a crew of three; pilot, radar officer (right seat), and technician (rear compartment)."
@mattskinner74 why do you think the tech's spot back there is so blued out. Are they 3 seats in row or is this side by side pilot/co-pilot and then one set behind? If only 3 seats there must be a lot of equipment back there.
@viper8red Not sure really. The guys at the Musuem would know for sure. I'll try to find out more for ya. In the meantine, here is my other video showing it in more detail. Notice 4 seats in the back and configuration. Not sure if this is the way it was originally, or like you mentioned, had equipment. w w w .youtube.com/watch?v=6KCZTczXfjk
@mattskinner74 The blue canopy was to shade the radar screen for better visiblity. When i flew in them we had 2 in the front and 1 in the back. I flew both front and back seat and have about 600hrs seat time in them.
@mig25pd This one is actually a radial engine, giving it that real glubglubglub kind of sound. Pistons like the P51 and Me109 have their own unique sound as well. Sometimes it's hard to decide if the tiger growl of a radial is more exhilerating than the long scream of a piston. Awesome machines!
Fantastic video No music that makes it so much more better!! In Vietnam, these planes had many nicknames of only a few can I remember. Among them, they were known as "Sandies" and also as "fireflies" I am sure there were many more, but I can not think of them right now. Man, could they deliver the napalm though!!
@SgtGrant23 Hard to say really. It's kinda hit and miss. I know that it's flown to the Reno Air Races every year and to some vintage/modern day airshows. Just have to look at the upcoming airshows to see if she is going to be there.
Is that the pitot tube at the top of the vertical stab? Loved the fully swivelling tail wheel!

I thought the A-1 is a single seater...
JayJay1990fromwiehl 1 year ago
@JayJay1990fromwiehl You are correct, the A-1 originally was a single seater. I failed to write that it is a EA-1E (AD-5W) Skyraider N188BP.

@JayJay1990fromwiehl Ok..all fixed now. Thanks for catching that! :)
