@CassOnCall I think bench pressing this way is the best for athletics. You're pushing with your entire body, even your legs, as opposed to a bodybuilding style bench press where you pretty much just have chest+triceps working. So this will build way more strength, since you're using more muscles. I guess if athletics are your goal though, you won't have to arch your back as much as a powerlifter, since that is more about decreasing the range the bar has to travel, but you should ask a pro :).
@antzzz111 holding the breath the entire time helps you keep your back arched during the lift. There's too many things shifting (organs and such) when you breath in on the way down, and out on the way up.
@BeefyDrew you better look again. He's benching 300 pounds. Another 300 pounds is done thanks to bench shirt. My wife can hit 400 with this kind of equipment. Raw is the only way to go.
@mjdibenedetto having an arched back creates less distance from the bar to reach your body, thus making the bench easier as it travels less distance. Plus having your back flat allows your elbow to go to low while at the bottom position of the bench which can create a shoulder injury. But with less distance your arms have to travel it is much better for your shoulders
is it really ok to lift your ass off ??

I do wonder if there are perhaps better bench techniques out there for cross-over into athletics...

whats the difference in doing bench like this and having your back flat on the bench? whats the mechanics behind the form
