I don't know why, but my favourite part of this movement is immediately after the cadenza, where the violin soloist plays the trills and the flute comes in with the main theme. It's so damn beautiful! Always has been my favourite part!
Played with a passion to match that of the composer. It was great to be young but age has its compensations - for my sins I paint watercolours and they may be getting better.
Listen to David Garrett's performance with Mikhail Pletnev + Russian Nat. Orchestra. It's the same interpretation but the recording is cleaner (newer), and I think he performs better than Marcovici. He is more precise. It's not on youtube though.
But I totally agree that this is astonishingly beautiful. This is one of my very favourite pieces, certainly my favourite violin concerto.
This performance, like many others, has an orchestral crescendo at 7:20, although I did not see it in the score. I also did not see pizzicato in the cadenza in the score. I have the Dover edition.
People are allowed to interpret the music, you know. There's no hard-and-fast rule that says you can only do crescendos when the composer wrote it into the music. I doubt Tchaikovsky would really care that much.

The violin sounds SO GOOD. May I ask what is it? Anyone knows? Stradivari, Guarneri, or..?
