Anyone else notice that everyone seems to feel that the music from the times of their lives that yielded the least problems and the most fun is the greatest ever ? You can zero in on someone's age simply by know in the recording year of their favorite songs ....
@DJPsychoDTM I would agree about the '30's, but I was speaking just in general terms about people as a whole. Individual taste is still of course individual ..... I also believe that whatever suits your tastes in music, is PERFECT, for you. It doesn't need to be perfect for anyone else. As long as we keep it playing !!!
you people are so brainwashed... there has always been shitty music, its just that today's shitty music gets played on the radio and TV... its not like everyone from back in your day was geniuses...
@svendiamond you know what kiss my ass cause you just jealous because nobody is not into these young assholes of today generation of music show more ass then talent because they have no talent i mean every person from back in the day could really sing and hit a high note ..when the last time you heard a artist male or female actually hit a high note besides PATTI LABELLE,Whitney Houston and Aretha. i can think of one and one only Jennifer Hudson.one only one and can not name a male artist
@9thwardbadboy "every person from back in the day could really sing" -- no. see, this is where you're wrong. the classic R&B stations only play the hits from back in the day... the best songs... there were plenty of untalented musicians back in the day... you really think that everyone used to be great, then all of a sudden stopped? if so, when did they stop? exactly which year did it change from "every person can sing" to "almost no one can sing"?
@svendiamond - I can back U up on that one. Some people that are considered some of the greatest voices of our time were regularly FLAT on record. WHITNEY was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge culprit of that ("The Greatest Love Of All", anyone?) All of the Jacksons, with the exception of Tito and Jermaine, faked playing instruments.
The thing about it is this: people get caught up on ageism so much (on both sides) that, in order 2 make the argument, they avoid the obvious.
@DJPsychoDTM yea... it's just so stupid how people love putting "NOW THIS IS REAL MUSIC" on countless music videos on youtube... it's like, hello, it's all music.

This song is so beautiful it makes me cry. This man is AMAZING! He played with Miles, Marvin, Funk Brothers and can write, sing and play like this?! Wow. Thank you for the joy and the beauty, Michael!
Ok, I want you youngsters (I was born in the early 60's) who are having your minds POISONED with this RAP CRAP to LISTEN TO THIS REAL MUSIC! I want you to understand that those are REAL people PLAYING REAL Instruments. Michael is playing Bass and singing lead, there are REAL people playing drums, guitar, horns, keys, singing background! LISTEN to TALENT! Listen to this music and learn! (and check out Phyllis Hyman, "You know how to love me" and you'll understand even more).
@Bassplayershadow2023 Lets hope the youngsters read and understand the brilliant comment you said about Mr Henderson and the talented people playing instruments in the background. You must have great taste in music, especially mentioning the late Phyllis Hyman....WHAT A TALENTED, FABULOUS SINGER SHE WAS!!!! I was born in the early 70's and I always say I was born too late to appreciate this melodic music, MY KINDA TUNES!!!! Lady GaGa.......Lady Crap more like it!!!!!!!
@Bassplayershadow2023 The reason why today's music is not that good is the direct result of discontinued and school cut backs on music. When we went to school years ago, we had to take a music class and either learned the violin or clarinet and moved up to other instruments if the talent and desire was there. Now there is virtually no music being taught in public schools today. What a shame. And our young people have settled for anything. We must bring back music to our schools.
@phatstevie2 sho you right! I too came up in the 60's where you actually knew how to read, write and play a real instrument-not program a synthesizer. If you were a singer, you knew how to sing-could read music, and didnt need a computer to clean up the way you sound. These days, you go up to someone and say I sing this in the key of C or B flat, & they look at you crazy!
@Bassplayershadow2023 - U need 2 realize that the ability and the opportunity 2 pick up instruments, while prevalent during OUR time (I'm 42), hasn't been so in the last 20 years. As a FELLOW MUSICIAN (26 instruments), I view your rageful statements as ignorant and divisive. I was also brought up in the hip-hop generation and can appreciate the genius, rage, love, protest and MUSICIANSHIP (yes, there is A LOT of it!). We Black folk have had enough taken from us. Why make the chasm wider?
@DJPsychoDTM Your comment is spot on. Bassplayer ignores the socioeconomic reasons behind children not having instruments over the past 20 years, namely the cutting of music programs in the schools. The Corporatization of the recording industry is another factor as well.
@Bassplayershadow2023 True words spoken brotha, this is what is all about, creating great music, listen to these vocals and you can feel the soul touch something in you that makes you feel good to either dance, sing or play another song.
@Bassplayershadow2023 Truer words never spoken help them get this straight , I'm a 50's baby boomer and I do apperciate my music, 50',60's,70, thru late 90's. I love hearing real voical real musicians playing instruments horns, drums ,percussion, give me the real thing. I sang and I know voice and pitch and lurics reading music the right way ,writing music with cords and harmony please it time for school youngsters.
@Bassplayershadow2023 While I agree that Michael Henderson is a musical genius,& there's a lack of live bands. But....You can't say that Hip Hop is not relevant. In fact A lot of rappers put money in many Funk/Soul legends
pockets by sampling their music.
Also if you don't think HIP HOP can PLAY Live...Check Out THE ROOTS ON JIMMY FALLON!
Here we go again the Mighty Fabulous 70's hits!!!! Now it doesn't get any better then this song/track. I had just served in the Military and in Hotlanta{Atlanta,GA} Was the best time in my life back then..... Yes!
Take I'm Yours is Michael Henderson's best jam. In the Night Time is a close second. Brothers don't sing like this anymore with the big band in the background.
What a KLassic joint from the balladeer of the late 70's (IMHO). This song got me in trouble, I was really tryin to impress a certain young lady in HS when this was out, and I had a few vocal skills, so I was always singin this to her. To make a long story short, she was involved with another dude, so my efforts with her led to a confrontation with him - I lost !
@tedjohn963, You know where those days went. The new kids can not write or read music. People can not belive that leon ware worte for Marvin Gaye , Minnie Ripperton, and most of Motown including Michael Henderson and Norman Conners. I thank goodness for knowing good music when I hear it.
I brought this lp back in the day. I pretended he was singin to me. Those were some wonderful nites. It always came out right, in the NITETIME! SING MICHAEL SING!!!!!
OH SHIT....does anybody recognize the beginning of this tune? I think its on that Rashaan Patterson song....think about it!....of course I would love to sample this tune too.
Me too. A convertible Porche with the curl blowing in the wind. He was kinda cute and sexi too. WERK MICHAEL!! But the going gets better for me IN THE NIGHTTIME. I'm not trying to say that I'm not happy in the day time!
Growing up in Detroit, it was wonderful to see a young Michael Henderson playing with Stevie Wonder in 1972 (He gave us hope even then, for I was 7 and learning to play and he wasn't 16 and playing for Steve! Imagine!) Then thanks to drummer, arranger, svengali Norman Connors the rest of the world got a good look at how deep and profound Henderson's talent was. Today, we need mentors like him to bring real musicians back into the game as opposed to today's "businessmen" who make money but no music.
Phone always ringing and Radio singing .I cant believe i remember the words to the song .Micheal Henderson you music was played at all cards partys, spaids,BIDWISS.We miss you in this industry.
i hear this song almost everyday on our station wdia in memphis, and never knew who sang it, and on a whim i searched for it, and i had no idea it was michael henderson. i am such a big fan of his!
I have been a Michael Henderson fan since 1976. He's an incredible artist with a great voice and wrote a lot of wonderful songs. Not too mention that he's a pretty good bass player too. I got a chance to see him do this one in concert. 1977 Dayton, OH with Phylis Hyman and Brick. It was a great show!!
"Graydog788" lawd those were the fun days! At my Granny's house, BBQ on the grill, red kool aid on the table, family enjoying family! It was so much fun! I mean we had some fun! Lawd! What I would give to go back in time and have those fun times again!
wow. i forgot about this song. "j" would try to get me tipsy so he could sneak feels. i was like 16 and he was 21. god i learned so much since then. men have'nt changed.
These guys came up in the era of big bands. Even the average musician in a high school band back then had a sense of arrangement and plus, we had a lot of our parents jazz albums and knew arrangement. Kids don't have that today. The record industry has had a hand in that because when kids started having disposable income, they started catering to them instead of keeping the music real. The death of XCommunity radio had a lot to do with it too.
Said it before, I'll say it again...they just dont make music like this anymore. Its a damn shame. If more artists understood that all you really need is a simple rhythm section, they would go a lot further. But of course you gotta know how to sing. So, that eliminates 90% of the singers out here, from this discussion. Too bad, Mike was phased out because I saw him on another clip, live..and it would seem that he still has the vocal chops.
Teddy Peabo and all the groups of the mid-late 70's are always remembered when we talk about that era but this dude could blow wit any of em. Mike had a unique voice and style. i like him on everything from Valentine love to Wide Receiver specially the remake of Be My Girl thank you Norman Connors for introducing us to ike, Eleanor Mills and all the other obscure talent you brought to us back in the day.
yeah, michael henderson has a FANTASTIC voice (i think its something like 4 octaves or so?). smooth, crisp, helluva bass player. everybody has said it before...r&b music today is worthless when compared to greats like him. those out today simply have ZERO talent.
thank God i grew up in a time when one had to have talent to make music.
On which Michael Henderson cut do I post my words of praise? Years ago I made a cassette tape from 4 or 5 of his albums (I had 'em all). I used to play it in my car and airbody that ever heard it wanted a copy. If you've never listened to this cat, listen to a few cuts here on youtube, then go out and BUY something. This dude is incredible. I even went to see him at the Roxy in L.A. He came on stage on crutches with a broken leg which surprised everybody. He only sang better! Great music.
This is not hard to find at all. on CD impossible unless you find his greatest hits Cd but on record definitely easy to find. depends on where your looking. i see it all the time when i'm shopping for records. check ebay i see this on there all the time
ohh yeah, thats the album i had circa 77-78 i think,i was 17 and i WORE this album out!!! had a beat-up 69 mustang and my 1st real girlfriend ,good times......indeed!!!
Is that Nick Ashford's voice in the background?

Not only is this record a classic, but by making and singing this record, Michael Henderson became a legend in his own time.

Beechboy68 3 years ago 2
Said it before, I'll say it again...they just dont make music like this anymore. Its a damn shame. If more artists understood that all you really need is a simple rhythm section, they would go a lot further. But of course you gotta know how to sing. So, that eliminates 90% of the singers out here, from this discussion. Too bad, Mike was phased out because I saw him on another clip, live..and it would seem that he still has the vocal chops.
pronkking 3 years ago 3
