  • I agree that it should be used with more care... but thats no reason to not increase it... this whole anti "doubling" argument he brings up is just plain retarded. In 1960s half of the world was in poverty, now one sixth, regressive analysis shows that Aid is attributable a good chunk of it, PERIOD. Its making progress and yet these critics arise complaining about pride issues in the form of "if i was african i would be offended". Who the hell cares, just keep funding, keep fixing.

  • fuck giving money.....those africans dont deserve it. fuck em

  • Easterly is my hero. I wish he spoke at my university's convocation and not Jeffrey Sachs. But I can't help that my uni is controlled by liberal fools.

  • @chapaev36 I am a liberal but I do not agree with Sachs. Generalising much? Sachs speaks of ending poverty in Africa if they chose to - I would like to see that happen in South Side Chicago for starters. Hot air

  • Easterly's book "The White Man's Burden" is exceptionally good. He's not a very good public speaker and his book is MUCH better at communicating his arguments. It is deeply data rich and evidence based argumentation. And once you've read that book, I highly suggest you move on to Dambisa Moyo's book "Dead Aid". Dambisa is a former World Bank analyst and Goldman Sachs economist who, as an African, argues that foreign aid has bred corruption and poverty. Also well supported, data rich arguments.

  • Extremely stimulating talk. Doing more doesn't mean necessarily doubling the aid, but taking a different approach.

  • - The developing countries continues to lives with dignity even without Western assistance.

    - Loan is a form of control by creating debt.

    - Source of loan comes from profit of the poor countries' natural resources.

    - "Investment" usually imply infrastructure (transportation, utilities, telecommunication, etc) development to benefit accelerated exploitation before other countries do. Built, owned, and operated by the investing country.

  • Example: Oil, gold, diamonds are all found in Africa. The corrupt government officials do not use the capital tribute to improve their countries or help the very people who work for the industries that generate that capital. The peoples in those countries are the ones at fault. "Hand them a gun and they will shoot themselves in the foot".

  • who da hell r u to comment on african mental capability. africa contains 53 countries and its population is multi religious & multiethnic (indians, white, blacks, arabs and jewish ) and over a billion people. and you one punkass has guts to insult all that we r.

  • the main problem is the african governments themselves, the asian tigers have lifted themselves out of poverty, african countries can do the same with good leaders

  • Very enlightining!!

  • true the "white men" flatter themselves in thinking they help, solve and save Africa and africans , when infact they are the reason for all african misery and poverty.but the younger genrations of africa will save their mama africa. ENOUGH OF THE TORTURE, FAMINE, POVERY.African younger generations will rise.

  • co-sighned!

  • You are a source of the problem. Eat dog flesh then..

  • Africans do not need the white man to solve their problems. What they need to do is reject foreign aid and work hard. They need to follow the example of Eritrea. Believe in Self reliance.

  • Eritrea is not a good example. President Isaias is destroing this beautiful country because his only skill is war management. Proving that not only white men, but black men too, can do harm to Africa.

  • we live in one world on one planet... and it is small..

  • it helps your soul ... give if you can since God gave it all to you and you were born of nothing but dirt.

  • A lot of neo-liberal rubbish from another fanatical devotee of the so-called "free" market.

  • Does that also apply to 2006 Nobel price winner Muhammad Yunus, who argues the same?

  • your ignorance in Easterly's work or development economics is just staggering.. You are just another deluded liberal with false superior morality and intellect.

  • Interesting you say that. In "The White Man's Burden," Easterly casts doubt on the viability of the free market as a solution to development. :P
